Sometimes I wonder how much of the new Who is stolen from these audio plays and novels by RTD and co, cos I see so many 'references' to them in the episodes. Does RTD genuinly have the talent for Doctor Who? He seems to borrow so much.

The new who episode 'Dalek' is a lite version of the Big Finish story 'Jubilee' (Colin Baker's finest Who performance), with most of the plot removed. They share the same author.

The writer of ROTC/TAOS had read Spare Parts btw.

He even got a mention in the end credits.

How you can read an audio play, I don't know.

Anyway,...

Doctor Who Magazine #368 confirmed that this story was inspired by the Big Finish Productions audio play Spare Parts, which Russell T. Davies had previously described (along with The Holy Terror) as "some of the finest drama ever written for any genre, in any medium, anywhere." Spare Parts author Marc Platt, received a fee and was credited in the end titles ("With thanks to Marc Platt"), and there is a nod in the dialogue with Mickey labelling himself a "spare part". However, writer Tom MacRae noted that his television story was not a simple rewrite of Spare Parts: "My story isn't the same — it's got a different setting, different themes, and different characters, cos once we started talking, the whole thing developed in a very different direction. But as Russell says, we wouldn't have started this whole line of thinking if he hadn't heard Spare Parts in the first place." (In the 2005 series, the audio play Jubilee was adapted into the episode Dalek.)

The Final Ratings are now in for Army of Ghosts,: 8.19M and the BBC3 repeat picked up 756,000. Very good figures indeed.

Thanks for the figures. Looking at your earlier post, it's nice to see that so many people managed to catch Tooth & Claw. Quality episode, that.

One little thing that I've been wondering is in the opening credits sequence in all(?) previous series prior to David Tennant's (not so sure about C.E's) Doctor haven't they always had the current Doctors face in some kind of time tunnelly thing, just a point of talk, good or bad to get rid of or couldn't care less or something more sinister, me personally I miss it, I have no idea why I thought of that other than I started to watch Genesis of the Daleks again just to see if Tom Baker is still the best Doctor ever (he is, "would you like a jelly baby?") and got all that Doctor face in a time warp thing-a-me and it made me feel nostalgic and made me realise D.T's face isn't featured in the opening credits.

Funnily enough, when I first watched Rose that was one thing I looked out for in the opening credits. Like you, I missed seeing it the first few times but now I don't even give it a thought. Mind, having Christopher Eccleston's mug leering at you like that might have scared some prospective viewers so much that they'd have switched over to ITV, so you can understand the BBC's decision to do without the face. ;)

Remember the McCoy wink? (shudder)

What? He's obviously the best Doctor ever and it's unlikely he will ever be bettered. Tennant doesn't even come near.

As for the intro sequence, I think the actors' names that fly at you are really tacky (looks american), the new Doctor Who logo is a bit crap (long discussed ages ago) and the time tunnels are no way as mysterious or as fun as say the 70's intros. They've just gone for fancier graphics cos they can do it now but it doesn't look any better.

It was all tongue in cheek, Tom Baker will always be the best in my opinion as for second best, hmm.......

Oh. :D Mea apoligias as they would say on Channel 9.
No need for apologies, just fishing, as you said before keep this thread alive just a little bit longer as I have a renewed interest in Doctor Who in the past and also I'm interested to see this hit the 1000 mark by fair means ;)

The face in the opening credits didn't actually start until the fifth story of season four, Troughton's first season.
I always though it was rather tacky, although I do like Davison's face appearing in the stars. I like the names in the credits, but the new logo is crap.

If anybody hasn't seen tham all, here's an excellent page with every iteration of the opening titles from 1963 to now!

Wow, looks like I've missed a couple pages of great discussion!

Here's one I'll throw out there for a good debate:

They should make a special episode and call it “The Four Doctors”. We’ve had “The Three Doctors”, “The Five Doctors” and even “The Two Doctors”, so why not four?

You could have, of course, David Tennant (the current Doctor), you could bring back Christopher Eccelston (the “first” Doctor for many new viewers, it would be great to see him again), you could bring back Paul McGann (whom we only got to know very briefly, if at all) and to round it off, Sylvester McCoy (as a bridge/link to the classic series.)

Yeah, it’ll probably never happen, but never say never! I’m sure it has been the fantasy of many Doctor Who fans for decades to see Daleks fight Cybermen, and RTD has given us that treat, so who knows! :D

Seriously though, as I mentioned with the whole UNIT thing several pages back, this might alienate some of the newer viewers who don’t know anything about McCoy and McGann – however that being said, they have successfully reintroduced Sarah Jane, K-9, the Autons, Daleks, Cybermen, etc. in the new series so far with great success, so why not! :D

Just a crazy thought I'd throw out there for discussion.

You'd have to use a CGI Eccelstone.

Paul McGann is a definately possibility though. His portrayal of the Doctor in the Big Finish audios has been excellent. I'm guessing it was McGann's Doctor who fought in the Time War and became, in the words of Satan, "the killer of his kind"?

Christopher Eccelston - will never ever have anything to do with Doctor Who. ever again. Never.

Paul McGann - I wouldn't mind, just to give him a bit more screen time.

Sylvester McCoy - Not only was he utter ***** when he was the doctor, he's a bit too old to be running around with Tennant and just wouldn't fit in with NuWho.

RTD has expressed his dislike of mulitple doctor episodes and the production team have always shied away from images of older doctors. I'd like a Tennant/Davison/McGann episode though. :)

Just throwing something out there...

I graduated the same year, same secondary school as the asian companion in the 1996 Doctor Who movie. I've yet to see that movie, so it was a surprise to see pictures of him in it from frame grabs from various Doctor Who websites.

Well, there's my 7 degrees of separation with Doctor Who :D

Stop reading so much into what people have said. People change their minds. I know Chris has said he will never do any Who ever again but now that he's been away from it for awhile, ideas change.
