Even though it's just over 3 weeks away till
Germany v. Costa Rica on the 9th of June,
I'm sure the anticipation is building amongst
many members of MR so why not kick things
off on the day of the traditional England
season-closer, the FA Cup final (Go Hammers).

Most anticipated matches in the group stages for me:
Netherlands v. Argentina, 21 June
followed by Brazil v. Croatia, 13 June.

We're starting to get quite excited here in the Jaffa Cake household. :)

Naturally, we're looking forward to England's matches, plus the draw has thrown up some other interesting ties in the group stages – such as Portugal vs Mexico and Netherlands vs Argentina (as you mention), and I'll be interested to see what the US can make of their tough group.

And yes, we're also looking forward to a good game at the Millennium Stadium today – hopefully though we won't see any more of our international stars picking up injuries...

I've stuck this thread for the duration, there's going to be a lot of discussion from our non-USA members I think (and some from the more enlightened Americans...;) )

I would obviously love to see England lift the trophy, but I don't think the national team has ever reached the level that the individual members suggest it should. I hope Rooney doesn't make it at all, as all the speculation and the possibility of another Beckham-like tournament are too horrible to contemplate.

They should have taken Fowler (discuss).:D

I think England can win the World Cup this summer – but that doesn't mean I think they will... ;)

Before Sven announced his squad, I would have thought Fowler might have snuck in there. The provisional 23 is a little light on strikers, but Andy Johnson on the standby list? I'd have put Robbie ahead of him no problem.

Or the national press... The sheer arrogance of assumption that goes on amongst some fans and newspapers as to making sure they've got the date of the quarter/semi-final matches that England 'should' get to booked off as if they were already set in stone makes me not support em every time. Equally the Rooney decision that only makes sense if they get that far irritates me - there's no guarantees in the World Cup after all. Take those who are sure to participate and worry about the later stages then.

Since my home nation ain't there (surprise, surprise) and would only be there for the first round anyhow if they were - I'm falling back on my secondary heritage and rooting for Italia although I'll likely stick to the highlights on TV since I get bored watching full games.

Also means that I need to look out pubs in London without SKY for my birthday drinks this year since any other one will be packed on 9 June!

No, I would much sooner see him lift the milk cup (or whatever it is called next season) for Liverpool.

I'm one of these infuriating "I support Liverpool not England" type of people. When i was younger I was into england, but because I am such a ardent Liverpool fan and get right into the Premier League - i Just can't bare to support Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand as I hate them every Saturday.

Might sound a bit strange but I really don't care about England.

Just spotted this entry from a report on the BBC's website about the Scotland v. Japan match. BBC impartiality? I think not.

1118 BST: A packed stadium is "treated" to a painful version of Flower of Scotland by a local singer.

:D

POLAND!

by the way you forgot to add that JUNE 9 POLAND WILL ALSO PLAY AGAINST EQUADOR!!! 21:00!!

They stand a good chance of getting through considering their group. If they can manage a blinder against Germany then topping their group would set them up for a good run. I'll certainly be supporting the Poles over the Germans ;) :D
According to some stuff I've read recently their "more passionate" fans might not do them any favours though ;)

OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU!
You are the FIRST person who said something POSITIVE about Poland playing in the world cup!
Everyone else is all like "You support Poland? You got to be kidding, right?"
BUT WE GOT DUDEK! I hope to god he is going to guard that goal with his life like he did last summer with liverpool!!

I was disappointed that the US got such a difficult draw with Italy and Czech Republic, but looking forward to the Cup nonetheless. I'll even be in Germany while the cup is going on!*

*for a few hours on a layover.

I don't see why - they've always had a relatively decent team. I might be biased because a lot of my friends and colleagues are Polish.

He might well be a saviour for you, if he can eliminate the mistakes

I don't agree on Brazil-Croatia, but would definitely add Italy vs Czech Republic to that list. In fact, most of the games in both that group and Argentina's should be top class.

argentina vs. netherland .. man that gonna be difficult to decide which to rooting for
italy vs. chez

another interesting match gonna be spain vs. ukraine especially if spain stumbles into ukrainian counter attacks ;)

Sounds wonderfully objective if you ask me, clearly the singer couldn't produce the song. Would you rather have Paula Abdul-esque false praise or some hard earned Simon Cowell respect!!

Shuffles in quietly, pauses, keeps pausing. Looks around..... speaks....

"Australia to be bundled out in the first round."

Leaves room feeling dirty....but confident in his prediction.
