Yes! and no, not being sarcastic... I'm of Polish descent.

Cześć!

Brazil has such a great team this year...I wonder if anyone can stop them. England also has a very strong team with Joe Cole, Stevie and Lampard etc.

However I think Ronaldinho, Kaka, Robinho, Juninho, Adriano, Ronaldo combo is still slightly more lethal...

Oh well, u never know in football and here I am in Tokyo, hoping Japan would woop Brazil!!! (not)

Another vote for POLSKA
Gotta support my own :p

Anyway, Poland should come out of their group, but after that I don't know. But on the bright side, no one really expected that Greece would win the 2004 European Cup so in sports anything is possible.

One thing I don't like is that coach Janas for some reason doesn't pick the best Polish players available, instead he has his little group of pupils with whom he has been playing for the past 2-3 years and definately our current lineup isn't the strongest of what we have to offer. We have a great generation of young players coming up.

I think the glory years of the 1970s and early 1980s are coming back on the horizon.

So anyway, my heart is with Poland BUT my mind tells me it will be Brazil (although the last time a South American team won the World Cup on European soil was in 1950s in Sweden which was Brazil).

Coach Janas is seriously getting on my last nerve!!! He should seriously pick some better guys, and I know there are alot out there in Poland!

OH OH OH OH
You know what really makes me pissed off? LUKAS PODOLSKI. He doesnt play for POLAND, he PLAYS FOR GERMANY! And HE IS POLISH! He's suppose to a big player to watch this season, and suppose to be crazy good. WHY IS HE PLAYING FOR GERMANY??? WHY???? Sure he lived there his whole life, but that doesnt mean he shouldnt play for POLAND!! Is there some rule that you have to play for the country of where you live? I highly doubt it.
ahhh

But thats awesome that there are so many POLSKA supporters on MR!!!

haha sorry, I'm just so paranoid about people being so mean to me about supporting poland :(

and Czesc!!

Wow. Who would imagine so many Poland supporters here? ;) It's too bad that if the US makes it out of the first round, they'll likely get Brazil.

I'm hoping that the Netherlands finally wins a World Cup.

Hup Holland!

Is anyone here going to watch Korea Republic v. Togo?
How many of the games from the entire tournament will you watch?

I'll probably see about 3 or 4... not that many.

ahhh

well he has both german and polish citizenship/passport and he could choose for which country he wants to play
and since he's living in germany since 19 years and the DFB asked him first

he could choose the country he plays for and he choose germany it's as simple as that

Lukasz Podolski and Miroslaw Klose, actually both of them are Polish but... anyway, Poland always had a lot of great talent, just look at their results in U-15, U-17, U-19 tournaments. The thing that they don't have is great coaching on grown up level, someone who would be able to put it all together, something they had in 1970s and 1980s but never had since then.

I see the word Togo and it reminds me of the sandwich bar that my California pal stops at on the way to the 49ers games to pick up food ;)

Unlikely to see any games unless I'm in the pub after work with colleagues. I won't turn it on at home. The only exception being if Italy get to the quarter/semi/final when I might keep it on in the background - and put my Italy T-shirt on ;)

That would be nice.

Was just looking at some of the clips in the BBC's World Cup video gallery of Holland doing their thing in 1974. The pace and the space given to players is so different then these days.

BBC World Cup video gallery

Some, if not most, clips can only be viewed in you are in the UK. :(

BUT WE GOT DUDEK! I hope to god he is going to guard that goal with his life like he did last summer with liverpool!!

After all that you got Artur Boruc and Tomasz Kuszczak instead...

And you forgot to mention the most talented polish goal keeper that is also packing for the World Cup, Lukasz Fabianski. Dudek had a great career but he is old, let the young guys take over, besides Dudek hasn't been playing in the first squad for Liverpool for almost a year so basically he is out of rhytm. Dudek is a good goal keeper but Poland has even better ones, they may be not as recognizable but Dudek didn't become a star over night either.

I'm pullin for Italy but the game I'll be at will be Switzerland Vs. South Korea.
I already have my swiss jersey. Im so excited.

Oh and Holland of course.

I'll be Tivoing as many of them as I possibly can, and watching a lot of them. I'd say I'll watch, maybe 30 of the games...maybe more?

I'm most likely going to have surgery in early/mid June to repair ANOTHER! torn ACL, so I'll be stuck on the couch for quite a good while. Long enough to get me through a good number of the first round games.

I'll be cheering the [MY] home team- the United States of America.

I'm so proud. :)

One of our players has been picked to represent his country at the World Cup! :)

Ok, the country in question is Angola and they're not exactly a world power when it comes to international football. And granted, the player in question – Rui Marques – is only with us on loan. And I concede, he only managed one first team game before he got himself injured.

But I'm still very proud. :)

all I know about Lukasz Fabianski is,that he is hot :D :D
god I can be such a girl sometimes lol

GCSEs are going on during the Group stage  . Will be watching afterwards though. Anyway, i think that Rooney gives the extra flare to the play and a team with him is better than without.

I say give Theo Walcott a try. My geography teacher was his sports teacher and he is AMAZING. He deserves a go in the match against trinidad & tobago.

Forget the tournament. The only match that matters for me is:

4 June 2006
Brazil v New Zealand
Geneva, Switzerland

:D

I've stuck this thread for the duration, there's going to be a lot of discussion from our non-USA members I think (and some from the more enlightened Americans...;) )

I can't believe that so many people here in the US have no idea that there is a world cup this year. But I wouldn't underestimate the number of immigrants, 1st, 2nd generation or greater in this country that follow real football.

I think Argentina is very capable this year, but Brazil's chances are huge. So much talk of Poland, that I am getting interested. I am a believer in the underdog, especially after UEFA 2004. :)

lets all have a moment of silence for the rest of the world who isnt playing in the world cup... okay moment over

Thanks for that moment of silence, I needed that. I am still saddened by the absence of Greece. :(

COME ON JAPAN!
....and ENGLAND!
I will support Japan and England this summer. Japan won't win it, but this is their best ever chance. We've got an amazing squad lined up. Miyamoto and Nakazawa in defence are sublime. Our Midfield of Nakamura, Nakata, Inamoto, and Ono is the best in Asia, and possibly, very good at world level. Tamada (a striker) is going to be great. But, we've got a really tough group, and to get through, we have to beat Australia. It's unbelievable how much Japan has improved over the years.
As for England, I hope Rooney recovers, as I support Man U as well, although it's unlikely he will in time. England haven't changed much over the years, and I'm sort of getting bored of their gameplay  England, have a bad chance this year though. I'm thinking we will disappoint against Sweden, and come 2nd in the group. We will then play Germany, and get knocked out...

Who is actually going to be at a game?

As I said before I'll be at Switzerland Vs. South Korea in Hanover.

Oh, and a friend of dad's (they both work at Nike) made this chart up. Its USA West Coast times, I belive, but some of you may find it useful.

Sorry about the quality, photobucket is being slow and I had to resize it for this forum; its still legible zoomed in but it could be better.
