Great goal by Beckham, perfect placement of the ball...

And I love reading through all the pre-game posts about Crouch-this and Crouch-that, and then the guy doesn't even play. :p ;)

According to the guys who called the England/Ecuador game on ABC, the scary part about England is that they've not been playing very well at all, yet they keep winning games. If they'd step up and play like they should, they'd be able to beat ANYBODY, even Brazil.

I agree. However, I guess that still remains to be seen... ;)

Guys... can you agree to disagree or take it offline?

I suspect most neutrals would prefer to see entertaining football rather than a stodgy affairs with little flair. So while yes, for England fans, it was the right result however poorly executed, for the neutral fan, it was boring, as most of England's games have been in this tournament to date. Bakedbeans, you do appear to be watching the games through very red and white tinted glasses...;)

As I stated in the first post, I'm supporting Spain.

The only problem I have is the constant dig at a crap team... Which is wrong.

As for watching the games... I find that hard to do without screaming at the sack of crap that is lampard. The whole point of the thread is to debate the world cup and speak about the world cup and that is what dogbone and I are doing - I don't see much reason to take it offline (plus he lives about a trillion miles away :) )

Twas just that we were getting bogged down in the same argument between 2 people which was looking like it might degenerate into a 'quote' fest.

I was wondering why you had a Spanish 'tar but seemed so England focused (in terms of defending them) ;) so you can answer another question for me - what 'tune' do you sing the chant in your location too? I wonder every time I see it!

My only sunshine.

You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away

one of englands problems at the moment is the lack of strikers (who are actually in good shape)

Owen: wasn't really in good shape before the got injured
Rooney: just came back from injury
Crouch: 05/06 season: 47 games 13 goals OK performances so far
Walcott: perhaps too young

sure Gerrard and Lampard are dangerous midfielders but if they don't score then England has to relay too much on sheer luck and Beckham crosses/standard situations

for example i still can get around why today Crouch as the obviously better penalty area player wasn't playing today and sven choose 4-5-1 instead only with Rooney up front

I don't think you could find a more misleading stat.

EDIT: not that you are trying to be misleading, but that crouch stat really isnt a great reflection of what a vital player he was in Liverpools season

I'm going to say the Dutch will just edge it tonight – 2-1. Extra time might be needed.

And forgive me for referring back to the England match from earlier – but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Beckham's little bout of illness. We've just seen a slow motion replay and it wasn't pleasant.

I didn't say 40% effort. I said 40% of their potential. They are potentially the best team on the planet.

Fair enough distinction. Still, 'potentially the best team on the planet' is overstating it somewhat, don't you think? To be 'the best team' they need to work together as a team. You are suggesting that the aggregate of individual skills should make them the better team. But since they haven't shown they can put their skills together, perhaps then they ARE playing near their full potential? Germany and Brazil are the only teams I've seen (and I haven't seen many since I'm in the US and don't have cable) who appear to be operating as a unit. Being a Germany fan, though, I can accept being charged with bias.

well it's prettty obvious that he is a vital player when he plays he seems to have a phenomenal work rate (at least i have seen him so far playing like that)
together with an other scorer he would make a formidable duo _but_ on his own he is not enough for england in simple scoring skills (england needs somebody like Pauleta, Klose or Toni in front)

First half summary: borrrrinnnngggg

If I see Holland reverse field with the defense one more time, I'll scream.

Shame to see Ronaldo leave so early though, he actually made this match a bit more interesting.

Could someone please explain how Boulahrouz' studs into the thigh challenge on Ronaldo was not a red card?. It was deliberate and it was meant to put Ronaldo out of the game. It has also cost Portugal a substitution. It has set the tone for what is shaping up to be a nasty but nevertheless entertaining game. Costinha was lucky to be on long enough to be sent off, if that makes sense.

Perfect sense, since to me it looked like he was going in spikes-up at every opportunity. Looked like he could have gotten 3 cards in that first half, almost like he wanted out of the match.

At least now the bad blood is making it more interesting. Hopefully Holland will pick it up.
