This case is way better than Apple's:
  • the back of the iPad is visible
  • the edges are smooth (silicone) and not edgy
  • the Apple Pencil is secured (e.g. if you shove your iPad in a backpack, the pencil won't detach

Yep, pretty nice, indeed. I’m reallly liking mine as well. I haven’t always been a fan of Otterbox’s offerings, but they did a good job of not adding a whole bunch o’ bulk to this new Symmetry case while at the same time offering a good amount of protection.

It definitely looks amazing, very aesthetically pleasing. If it was out before I got my Amazon knock-off, this would definitely be on my IPP...

I also got this case as it was the only one available that wasn't Apple branded. I'll be pairing it with a Magic Keyboard. Excited about this case!

How is it weight wise? It looks nice but I wouldn't wanna add any more weight compared to the smart folio.
 
Here are some weights for the 12.9” Otterbox vs the Apple folio.

Otterbox: 14.05 oz / 400 g
Apple Folio: 8.4 oz / 238 g
Apple Keyboard Folio: 14.20 oz / 401 g

Otterbox w/ iPad: 36.05 oz / 1022 g
Apple Folio w/ iPad: 30.35 oz / 861 g
Apple Keyboard Folio w/ iPad: 36.15 oz / 1026 g

Bonus measurement is my 10.9” with Apple Smart Cover and generic plastic back cover: 23.45 oz / 664 g.

I’m loving mine but if you don’t want or need side protection and drop protection then the extra weight may not be worth your while. As soon as I put on the case I started carrying my 12.9 around the house, using it on my lap on the couch and using it in bed. I’m not that strong and it only took me a short while to become accustomed to the extra weight.

I don't treat mine very bad, but it would be easy to drop it even in house. Some protection more than just a folio just seems like a good idea

I picked up the 12.9 version two days ago and like it very much. Shipped back the apple keyboard case and will just use the Magic keyboard 2 with canopy case from now on.
 
Not if you add protective sleeve etc. Some people need additional protection. If you're hard on your ipad this seems like the best choice to date.

I travel a lot and even though I'm careful I'm not comfortable with just a folio cover on my iPad as it bounces around inside my bag.

So mine arrived today. I am totally pleased. I feared it would be the box that otter boxes used to be. But it’s not. It’s a little thicker than my folio but no a lot. It will I think be perfect for traveling and I may end up keeping it on all the time.

Honestly I don't mind the additional weight if it means that the pencil can charge and is prevented from falling/detaching when shoved in a bag

Agree this case is great. It's a little tippy in upright desk mode for the 12.9, but I've not found one of the tri-fold front cover type that is not. Will probably try the Zugu case. Stability in upright mode is not an issue for me since I usually use it in lying down mode or tablet mode in my lap, and the front cover wraps around nicely. The magnet is strong which holds the front cover back.

Only little niggle is when the pencil is stored on the pad--after moving the pencil flap out of the way, the front cover sort of sits recessed into the rear part of the case, and you have to insert your finger in the pencil gap to open the cover. A small finger grab like on the Zugu case would have been a careful thought.
