Yes it can. But only if you are using Wifi or 3G. I have had plenty of service calls and had to open the browser to log onto our web portal at the same time.

The iPhone wasn't able to do that, honestly can't remember if it can now.
Wrong. The iPhone has always been able to do that, except when it was only on Edge, but even then it could call and download data over wifi.

If Blackberry can get VVM, so can the Pre.
We're not talking about what it can do, we're talking about what it does. Just because I have to potential to compose an amazing symphony doesn't mean I can.

I bet there will be a version with expansion
Okay, so this hypothetical Pre is great! But the real thing not so much.

Someone will write an unrestrictor.
Another hypothetical situation, but this time one that breaks the SDK agreement with Sprint.

Its almost finished.
Yet it's still not available. You sure are in love with this hypothetical Pre.

Who knows how long we'll be able to Jailbreak, oh yeah they've been saying that for two years.
Yes, but now a Pre user is in an update race with iTunes, which isn't good for the average user. And Apple can just keep going back and screwing Palm Pre users as much as they want.

I see plenty of them in the wild and the users seem to be very happy with their Pres.

I've yet to see one. I've never seen one single Palm Pre user in all my time in Portland (a fairly major city).

Are you serious ? You really need to check your facts. The pre, although 3g, is the only smartphone that I know that does not allow if. The inability to review information while being on a call me worse then not being able to listen to music when checking mail.

Is there such a thing as a "pro" phone?

This looks pretty pro to me:

I suppose that's a valid point. Its probably more perception based, but there is definitely the perception of what looks professional (e.g. there was a thread some months ago that stated that black iPhones were more professional than white iPhones).

No matter how good or bad the Pre is, I think it will soon be swallowed up by the next wave of cell phones coming on to the market, such as the HTC Hero.

My GF have a Palm Pre and I hate to say this but I think the operating system in years ahead of the iPhone. Now the hardware is a different story, it sucks.
But as long as Palm have Web Os I'm sure they can build a killer hardware.

****! Maybe Apple will buy up webOS patents from HP and implement them in future iOS firmware?

It is for most people who actually used it. Palm's swan song. Perhaps the homebrew community will keep it alive years after Palm became defunct. I actually use more Preware than the App Catalog just for system tweaks (patches). And who knows? Perhaps all the apps go free in the official store.

I watch webOS parish while an inferior OS like Android keeps succeeding? If HP does have a fire sale on webOS devices and you are looking for a good alternative to iOS at a cheaper price, I suggest to pick them up if you aren't much an app whore. WebOS is the best bang for your buck. This is like when the Sega Dreamcast was being sold for $50. A $50 new smartphone is worth it considering most go for $400+. From there, you would understand Palm's brilliance.

An ex-Apple employee (Jon Rubinstein) who helped created iPod watches as his webOS is gone a couple years in the market faster than you can say Sega Dreamcast. My favorite mobile OS took its final bow. Only fanboys get blinded and become limited with their experience with other platforms. I never understood fanboy mentality. If I am at a friend's house, should I refuse using their Mac/PC or Xbox 360/PS3 because I happen to prefer one of them more? No. I just use it to entertain me or make me more productive.

Hopefully, another manufacturer picks webOS up. If not, some of the UI elements can live on with BlackBerry QNX phones...

WebOS is awesome. Not enough hardware sales to promote developer support. It does suck that it will be gone and Android, which I think is far inferior to both WebOS and iOS, is popular.
