Looks like I should be able to 3D print one of these for about 16 cents.

In fact, I think I will as I doubt they make them for my 2011 vintage MacBook Pro.

It is a great idea but at $7 it is also about 10X overpriced.

someone else is either subsidizing you by letting you use the 3D printer for free or cheap, or you already had one which you paid way more than this for.

next criticism!

No the comment about printing them at 10 cents each means that someone WILL do this and then sell them for 50 cents each and run these guys out of business. There is no way you can sell these at $7 each for long. Any kid with a printer can make 1000% profit selling at $1.

More technically speaking what the comment really means is the bar for entry to competition is set low, Anyone can compete.

Now if they only had a product for the butterfly keyboard? Oh wait Apple said not to put anything inside when you close the cover.

I at one time worked around the corner from a security guy (who was really talented), who filled the spare ports on his desktop PC with epoxy, to, yep, you guessed it, make them exceedingly secure.

"Hey, why did you glue your laptop shut?"
"So it's ultra-secure."

How did this trash make the front page? More interesting is how/why they threw in a hair trimmer cleaning brush with the product.

I have had an issue with a couple of USB-C machines getting dirt into the port, then the charger cable doesn't always go in properly. Nothing some high-velocity air can't sort out, and maybe a gentle pokey-poke with a needle.
Definitely. Nothing like a gentle pokey-poke to clear the ports.

20 years owning laptops. Never heard of uncovered ports being a problem.
Only problem I ever encountered was constant plugging/unplugging USB devices until something in the port got bent. Most of our accessories are going wireless so you don't really encounter that as often.

While we're on the subject, folks shouldn't use cases or screen protectors on their MacBooks either. Dirt gets trapped and scratches the casing over time, without the user even realizing it. They also trap heat which could expand your battery. Screen protectors don't have that issue, but they won't save your screen from getting cracked or dirty either.

To play devil’s advocate, aren’t most ports fully empty spaces with the pins on the inner edge, whereas with USB-C, the female port has the pins in the middle of it (hence why the male USB-C plug looks hollow)? With that in mind, it seems more likely for a female USB-C port to get damaged than most other formats.

A piece of electrical tape:
  1. comes in dozen of colors,
  2. adjustable length,
  3. covers all existing ports,
  4. “future proof” (will work with new ports not yet introduced),
  5. universal fit that’s compatible with all models
  6. no worry if you lose it
  7. causes dirt to adhere to it rather than shoving it deeper in the opening.
  8. cost less.

Looks like plastic junk.

Very surprised to see this on the front page.
