i had one of those silica gel packets rupture in my backpack at some point. one little gel got caught in a usb-c port.

there, now you've heard of it.
Well done! Work great to protect you usb-c in humid environments!
I guess humanity is bored, so we need to find additional ways to waste resources on useless gadgets.

Like the camera cap, this just looks like asking for unnecessary headaches

That brush is identical to one i got with my wahl peanut electric razer. 🤔

In all seriousness though, it's not a terrible idea. Last year something some how got caught in my MBP's USB-C port and i couldn't fully plug in the charger until i got it out.
You have a cute icon!

Love it!

To play devil’s advocate, aren’t most ports fully empty spaces with the pins on the inner edge, whereas with USB-C, the female port has the pins in the middle of it (hence why the male USB-C plug looks hollow)? With that in mind, it seems more likely for a female USB-C port to get damaged than most other formats.
USB A is very similar in construction, only larger.

I at one time worked around the corner from a security guy (who was really talented), who filled the spare ports on his desktop PC with epoxy, to, yep, you guessed it, make them exceedingly secure.

I've consulted at places that did that.

No the comment about printing them at 10 cents each means that someone WILL do this and then sell them for 50 cents each and run these guys out of business. There is no way you can sell these at $7 each for long. Any kid with a printer can make 1000% profit selling at $1.

More technically speaking what the comment really means is the bar for entry to competition is set low, Anyone can compete.
Ali express is already selling similar ones for half that, including shipping. Theirs are per port, so you can leve them on if you aren't using a port.

Yeah, can't be bothered to read all the people who say it's not a problem. If you regularly travel with devices with open ports, dust and fluff will get into the ports. One day that will cause a problem. If you carry your iphone in your jeans pocket a lot, go get a wooden cocktail stick and dig out the gunk in your port. Now imagine a small metal sliver gets lodged in one of those ports... this **** happens, and as someone who traveled a lot with my MBPs I would have liked this option, and I'd love idevice solutions too...

As someone who has logged millions of miles with Macs, I've never had a problem with ports getting clogged. Powersupplies dying, yes. Forgetting a flash drive, legendary. Clogged ports? Never.

Port dust is not a problem for most people, but for those who care, individual port plugs for each type of port are available at most electronics distrubutors, are very cheap, and are much more subtle and unobtrusive than this big ugly strip.

Um, aren’t the ports also helping with ventilation? Not a lot but some? Also, I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue with a dirty port.

More plastic for the landfill. Hopefully soon this sort of thing will be illegal to produce/import.

This has to be the most useless product of 2020. What do people do with their Macs?

Might seem silly to many but not to me. My previous MacBook Pro audio port crackled non stop so I took it the Apple store. There was a little bit of dog hair lodged into it.

I’m curious, what are you doing with them?👨🏼‍💻

I dunno. I'm constantly plugging things in and out and going places with my laptop. I'm a video producer so I'm just as likely to be somewhere shooting as I am to be in an office. Card readers and multiple hard drives are all common.

I just checked right now and my power cord 'clicks' in on 2/4 of my ports and the other 2 it kind of goes 88% of the way and DOES power the laptop, but it won't really stay in if I move it.

Guess it's time to clean them again. Same as every week. I can't say I understand the people who want USB C on the iPhone. Surely it would be just as bad on a mobile phone? Sounds awful.

i like these... Apple has this for the Megasafe connector, yet they don't have these protection for ports on a mac. Its ok for companies to do this, but if a company like Apple does protection cases and all, they too should be doing this for their own machines... Its only the right hing to do.. After all they do "look at the little things" (I guess that ends with software..)

Unless you work in some extraordinary environment, I cannot imagine dust entering the ports has a significant affect on lifespan considering the average number of years one owns a MBP. I am sure there is a much greater chance of foreign material infiltrating the keyboard. Maybe this is something Apple should simply supply with the MBP in the first place.
