Yeah, subtle...that's your middle name...

This should be good.:D

it might be disappointing.... it's a bit tough to talk apple stuff when i pretend i don't know anything at first..... i'm trying though...

what would you recommend bringing up? anything in particular/

ask about all-in-one computers from dell, compaq, etc...then ask what was the one in the TV commercial...

ask why they chose it specifically

ask about bundled software

ask about the moving display

...

Omigod, I just saw that ad about 30 seconds ago and it was frelling terrible. It starts off with the Profile4, then blabbers on that it can run thousands more software than the Mac and blah blah blah, then it does backflips over three iMacs, then moves the screen around like the iMac, except this is definately animation, it can't actually be done like that, but anywayz, it flips back over the iMacs, then turns towards them and spits it's CD-tray at them. Then the announcer says it's cheaper and then it ends. Frelling pathetic. I hope that's the last time I ever seen it. Frelling pathetic

BTW jello, ask them why they give the impression that the screen can move when in fact it doesn't and why no dvd burner

i covered most of that stuff... came back at me with the "can only talk about gateway products". i asked what the other computer was in the commercial "that one's good. we're better" or something like that... haha. you'll see

he's slower than my ass

Virgil: Hi. Thanks for choosing gateway.com. My name is Virgil, and I will be your esales advisor. May I have your phone number in case we are disconnected?
carl: hello
carl: i'm interested in the profile 4 (i think that's what it's called)
Virgil: yes tahts a great system
Virgil: do you have certain specifications you need
carl: one of the features that really caught my eye is the adjustable monitor, does it have a good range of motion so i could use it while standing?
Virgil: yes it sure does
carl: does the entire arm move or just the monitor tilting?
Virgil: im checking
carl: thanks
carl: i'm patient. :)
Virgil: thank you carl
carl: no problem. thanks for the help. i haven't bought my own computer before so i want to make sure it's right
Virgil: i understand
carl: hehe, you probably are used to computer illiterate folks doing this all the time..
Virgil: im getting specifics for you carl
carl: alright, thanks
carl: i thought the moving monitor was a big feature... hehe. guess not everyone cares about that like i do eh? anyone else asked about it?
Virgil: it tilts back and forth
carl: vertically or horizontally?
Virgil: up and down
carl: ok, thanks
Virgil: vertically
Virgil: will that work?
carl: and what's the standard video card in it?
carl: yeah, that sounds good
carl: i saw it going all over the place in one of the commercials so i wasn't sure if that was real or not
Virgil: which model are you considering
carl: i'm not sure... what are the options?
Virgil: what is your price
carl: up to 2500 or os
Virgil: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Virgil: heres a web site
carl: alright.
carl: that sounds good. how much does it cost to put in a dvd burner?
Virgil: the estimated date of arrival is around mid sept is that ok
carl: yeah, i guess
Virgil: i can get an external dvd burner
carl: oh, only external?
Virgil: would you like to place an order?
carl: hmm. don't really need two of them
Virgil: ok
carl: what's that other computer that's in the commercials with the profile?
carl: an apple something or other? what is that?
carl: (sorry for my lack of computer savvy)
Virgil: we sell the profile which is better
carl: oh, so the other computer is a different company? which is it?
Virgil: would you like to get a new gateway?
carl: what's the other computer in the commercial? how is the gateway better?
carl: just want to make sure i look at all the options. it's a lot of money i've been saving for a looong time
Virgil: then this is the place to be
Virgil: there's more software available for this profile
carl: that's good. how else is the other computer (what's it called??) not as good?
Virgil: the other is good we're better
carl: alright, but before i believe you, how come?
Virgil: heres a web site that explains it all
Virgil: http://www.etestinglabs.com/ma...teway.pdf
carl: oh, that is a pdf. not a website per se. i'll take a look
carl: ahh, the "imac". i thought it was something dumb sounding. hehe
carl: hmm. the "imac" has a dvd burner built in
Virgil: would you like to go ahead and order?
carl: can i look at the pdf?
carl: you get commission don't you? hehe
Virgil: we are 100% commission
carl: wow
carl: so no one had ever asked about the monitor tilting? i figured that'd be common knowledge.
carl: do you own a profile yourself?
Virgil: no
carl: can i ask what you use?
carl: hmm, this test doesn't seem fair
Virgil: have several
carl: why does the apple only have 256 MB RAM and the profile has more? wouldn't that affect the speed?
carl: doesn't that affect the speed?
carl: virgil my man. you there?
Virgil: I apologize, I am only qualified to discuss products offered by Gateway. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
carl: but you couldn't answer my question about the gateway product even.
carl: how much is an external dvd burner?
Virgil: around 459 and we have free shipping on that
carl: wow
carl: 2000 + 460. 2460 for the profile with an external dvd burner. one sec...
carl: does it have a wireless network card?
Virgil: no but we can include one if you want
carl: how much?
carl: lay it on me brah.
Virgil: are we doing business here tonight?
carl: yes. how much for a network card?
carl: wireless that is
Virgil: it dosnt have one
carl: so i can't add one?
Virgil: yes it would be a usb connection do you have wireless now
carl: not yet, looking into it for my next computer though. my roommate has a laptop so it'd be handy
carl: usb connection? doesn't that have a wire?
carl: ?
carl: hello?
carl: virgil?
Virgil: would you like to order now
carl: did you not see my question about the wireless network card?
carl: how much would it cost for me to add it
Virgil: do you have wireless set up now?
carl: no
carl: but i want my new computer to be wireless capable
carl: i've just configured an imac at apple's site. it's 2350 with a dvd burner (superdrive?) and wireless card
carl: how much would adding wireless capability to the profile cost?
Virgil: i see it 89 with free shipping
carl: hmm. that puts me over 2500. what software does it have with it?
Virgil: check the web siter
Virgil: here i send you the link
Virgil: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Virgil: this should answer alot of your concerns
Virgil: this a lot more powerful than that apple
carl: really? how so?
carl: what's the difference between windows xp and mac os x? (sorry for sounding dumb)
Virgil: windows is more widley accepted
Virgil: will that work
carl: oh that's good. is it based on "unix"? (i'm checking out the apple site about "os x") could i upgrade to os x on the profile?
Virgil: lets ge this on order carl
Virgil: heres the secured web site for your credit card information
Virgil: https://secure.webhelp.com/gat...=14452508
carl: the commercial said the profile was cheaper but i just configured the apple and it's cheaper. i still don't understand why i'd get the profile...
Virgil: carl i'm at the end of my shift if you like you may call me tommrow or i can call you and place your order now
carl: sorry i'mm still not sold on this.. the monitor doesn't move like it shows in the commercial. and it's not cheaper than the imac like it said. hmm
carl: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APP...re.woa/71/wo/YTEjs1fWR78GTYx8Js1/5.7.0.3.34.1
carl: that is how i configured the imac for less.
Virgil: Thank you for the chat; I hope this information has answered your questions.
Virgil: it might not be an apples to apples comaprison
Virgil: i quoted you our top of the line model
carl: yeah. apples to cows.
carl: that's the top of the line apple though.
carl: thanks for the info. it's definitely helped my decision
Virgil: well talk tommorow
Virgil: please put my name in the esales advisor slot when you place your order. thank you. You may reach me at 800-846-2036 ext. 55256 or at virgil.dolci@gateway.com if you have any questions or are ready to purchase your new computer or accessories.my hours are friday- Monday, 12to 11 p.m. ct.

thanks. i think

it was tough. i mean, i wanted to just spew facts at the end... but hey, the guy is just earning a living. it's not him i have a problem with but gateway in general... and i did cost him some money maybe....

that said, i'd do it again..... maybe when i have a friend here to enjoy it with. ha

This may be for every PC sales chat site, but one thing I notice on all of these is that the saleman (or woman) seems to be desperate to get an order from you. That's how I felt at least. If it is only Gateway, then that telss you that they're getting kinda desperate. Anybody know how their financial state is now?

Oh, and one thing interesting about them is that say that they're only qualified to talk about Gateway products. I could understand it maybe if they weren't doing so many comparisons to the iMac, but on my first try, my tech said she'd never seen an iMac.

oh i definitely hear you... and what you couldn't tell in mine was that my dude took forever to find out if the screen tilted at all.... it was ridiculous. more than 10 mins

clearly not very well trained. not about their own products, and definitely not the competition they pitted themselves against... they did it to themselves

and yeah, the guy said 100% commission. so i feel a bit bad. i mean, no way i was buying obviously. so i did nothing but waste his time. hence his desperation to make a sale

that said..... find a new job, right? ha

hey man jello you really dug it too him. good job. dont feel bad man. feel proud. that was good.

i like this one... just funny...

"carl: i saw it going all over the place in one of the commercials so i wasn't sure if that was real or not"

hah. anyways... it got really good at the end. jacked him. booyah!

Hey I just went to Gateway's site myself.....saw the Profile featured.........& you know......when taking a good look at it........ it's really not that bad. Then I looked at the specs...... & it's a 2.66GHZ Pentium 4!!! ........Now I'm an Athalon fan (for PC's) ....... but a 2.66GHZ P4 ain't bad......not to mention the 512mb DDR SDRAM...... I am beginning to think this could be a good thing for Apple, because it might make them finally commit to upgrading their more stylish and compact hardware, not just the big PowerMacs........ lets face it .......a 700MHZ G4, and the G3 iBooks just don't measure up.

Oh & I'm a Mac owner too........ so I am not biased. IMacs, iBooks, and eMacs all need big performance upgrades right now...... and products like the Profile might just push Apple to make the necessary improvements sooner rather then later. For the record, I hate Gateway and would never pay for any of their products....... but I did enter to win one of the free Profiles they're giving away....I mean.....what the #ell........ it's free!!! lol

P.S. Ric Flair RULES........ not the poster of this thread........ but the guy with the white hair who goes WHOOOOOoooooo all the time!:D

hacksaw jim duggan... hooooooooooo!

who you talking to dawg?

i think i should get back on the line with virgil today... when i say "lay it on me brah".... he questioned my integrity.... why? why? don't surfer boys buy computers too?? are we not human????

Ric Flair always bleeds to death in the ring! Hulk Hogan rules too...... I was very happy to see the fans cheering him recently when he went back to the WWF. Though I haven't watched much after that....lol....

P.S. Getting back to the Profile....... besides what I've already said......... I was again checking the specs..... specifically of the Profile X...... and after seeing the 2.66GHZ P4 and 512mb DDR Sdram.......I was thinking that if they ever threw in a TI4600 Video card (Rather then integrated Gforce2....... and Soundblaster Audigy sound, rather then crappy integrated audio...... they might really have something there. Not as a real threat to the iMac, but a threat to large PC Towers in general. Too bad they couldn't get a standard Socket A, ATX board in that case.......then it would be easily upgradable in the future.........

Wow, If a lot of apple people did this it could really put a dent in Gateways sales! The reason they push you so much is because they are on commision and they longer you keep them online the less sales they can make. let's don't stop at Gateway! haha. :D

bastards!

They didn't tell us anything about comparing the two. (Yes, I am a phone sales rep for add-on parts) All they said was "tell them they can get up to 2.8 GHz and the Mac only has 700 MHz" All of the sales reps here on the phone think the Profool is a joke. Of the reps I have talked to, no one has even asked them about the Profool let alone purchased one. It would seem that you guys are the only ones asking about it :D

haha. that's great

so that must tip them off right away.... if someone asks for the profile, then clearly they're a mac fan trying to show em up

ha!

well then if there going to try and fight agains a foe one has to learn the know the enemy to beat them. looks like they dont know apple... so they dont pose much of a threat to apple. apple know thier enemy and they educate thier employers well on them... thats why apple has a strong respectible ad campaign right now. thats why they have a strong resepctible business period that has survived some serious crap. but i hear ya on your response.

;)

We just got a company wide e-mail from Ted Waitt. This is ****ing hilarious, you guys have got to read it. Enjoy...

I teach my kids that it’s not right to fight, that you should make friends, not enemies. The business world is a little different. Business competition creates intense rivalries. I think it’s good to have rivals, as long as they’re outside Gateway, not among us. A good rival gives us a target, something to fight together. That’s what our business was founded on. The whole PC establishment was our target and we did everything we could to fight it together and bring it down. If you’ve never heard of Zeos or Northgate, it’s because Gateway fought those entities and won. In today’s world, it’s important to point out that having a rival isn’t personal. The individuals of those companies weren’t our enemies. In fact, I’m still friends with the founder of Zeos. It was just business.

To be honest, in the past few years, sometimes it’s felt like the rivals have been inside Gateway, not outside. But those days are over, starting now. We’ve worked really hard to build a new company that can compete with and beat anyone in this industry, and it’s time to start acting like it again. Our new Gateway Profile® 4 PC campaign is a departure from our past in that we’re going after a competitor by name. Apple’s been trying to claim leadership of a space that we basically created almost three years ago with our first Profile, and we’re not about to let them. We’re using hard facts – presented in a uniquely fun, engaging and honest way – to show that Gateway offers a superior product at a better price. The public reaction so far (except for the Apple disciples) says it’s working.

This is the first in a series of new external communications that will show the world what you already know: that Gateway is simply better than our competition. We’re not going to go after every one of our competitors by name. But whether it’s our products, pride, service, operations, or people, we’re just better than everyone else. Period. So let’s start acting like it, telling our customers about it and selling like it. And let’s join together to fight the rivals outside these walls, and win.

Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend.

Ted
