Go into system configuration and boot options, then select the drive again. reboot. Long boots can be caused by EFI searching for a bootable device. Assigning it in OSX skips the search unless option is held down.

yep, changed it in system pref and now down to 13secs with 4 programs opening.

Firmware Update Again

Hi all,

I just wanted to order the 256GB Samsung 830 SSD but maybe fortunately I read that there are problems with the firmware updates of this SSD in MacOS. Is this still the case? If so, are these firmware updates absolutely necessary?

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Firmare Update Again

Im pretty sure there has only been 1 firmware update so i think youll be fine

Ah okay, this sounds good. But do you expect a firmware update for the "Mountain Lion" release or is this OS independent?

Moreover, let's assume for a moment there is a second FW update...am I forced to have that installed or is this optional?

I apologize if these questions are trivial....

IF they release a new firmware, it will be optional for you to update, but there will probably be a reason why the new firmware is superior.

At this point the update would either have to be done in Windows under bootcamp (will not work in Parallels or Fusion) or by installing the drive on a PC from what I've read.

SSD Install for a 21.5" Late 2009 iMac

Hey,

I'm a newbie to this site and apologize ahead of time for asking questions which may have already been answered.

I recently purchased a samsung 256GB ssd (S830) for which I was going to install in my imac but have run into a few issues, only some of which I have figured out how to overcome.

How can I install the latest firmware updates on the SSD if I do not have windows?

Currently, I only have a copy of snow leopard for booting up the computer. I wasn't able to run time machine before my old hard drive crashed.

Thanks

iMac 21.5" (late 2009 model)

I wouldn't worry about updating, it's likely it already has the latest firmware.

Has anyone been using Filevault 2 with the Samsung 830?

I am seeing very ****** (relatively speaking) performance with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test (340 MB/s writes, 270 MB/s reads) -- anyone know what the issue could be?

My drive is the 256 GB version, just purchased a week ago. OS X Lion fully updated, and it's installed in the primary HDD bay.

I have seen other posts around here that mentioned slower ssd speeds with using FileVault. Not sure of why but you don't appear to be alone.

question to 2,8MHz MBP 15" 2009 (5,3) owners

Hello,

Could anyone, who owns a 15" Macbook Pro mid-2009 with 2.8MHz processor (model id: MBP 5,3), confirm that installing Samsung 830 256GB SATA III SSD in the optibay does not cause any problems whatsoever?

(the reason I don't want to use the SSD in the main bay is that I want to keep the HDD, and prefer to have it in the original bay which has the SMS feature).

I've found on other forums that some users report some issues, but I can't get a solid answer that would confirm one or the other..

I've spoken with OWC tech support asking for advice in this field (not pointing to any particular SSD), and the guy replied that they don't recommend 6G SSDs which support SATA III (Mercury Extreme in particular) to be installed in 5,x models because of incompatible SATA interfaces, but the Mercury Electra 3G SATA II is okay.

I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks,
T

Issue w/ Install

Hey guys. Can someone help me? This is for a Santa Rosa based 2007 15in Macbook Pro. I can't seem to get this drive detected when installed in the HDD bay. The drive is detected fine as an external via an enclosure no matter what but it just won't be detected no matter what I do when it's installed internally. I even tried booting into my lion usb os drive and restoring an image of my current install onto it and then swapping it back in and still no good. Thank in advance!

Has anyone else had any issue with the VAT cashback offer?

I put in my application a few hours ago, and i have received an email saying that my claim wasnt made within 30 days of purchase.

Invoice date 06/07/2012

Claim Date 12/07/2012.

Now, maths is not my strong point but as far asi can tell, thats well within the 30 day deadline

I just bought the 128GB from TigerDirect's $90 deal a few days ago. Since ML is more or less a week from release, I'll hold off the installation of the drive until then. My only question is whether TRIM should be enabled in ML? I read a few posts here on MR, AnandTech and also Apple Support Communities but was not able to get a definitive answer.

Think about it this way -- Samsung flash modules have TRIM enabled by default in the rMBPs, so if Apple thinks TRIM should be enabled in OS X, don't you?

As appletechpro says, Apple uses what is fundamentally the Samsung 830 in the rMBP with TRIM running. It is not clear if Apple have some super-secret highly-customised firmware running on their version of the drives; but in all likelihood the only difference between the Apple-branded Samsung firmware and the stock Samsung firmware is the manufacturer's ID (so Apple can artificially cripple TRIM support).

...so yes, enable TRIM.

Thanks for all the posts in this thread. Was trying to read up on what I could expect if I get a Samsung 830 (either 256GB or 512GB) for my 13" 2009 MBP (8GB Ram, currently a 500GB 5400rpm HD).

Its nice to know if will be about 5-6 times faster than my HD; though it kills to know it would fly even quicker if I had a SATA III bus *sigh*.

Just can't decide between a 256GB drive or 512GB (currently I nearly fill 400GB for OS X and 100GB for Win XP, of the 400GB about 125GB is my iPhoto Library).

I recently purchased a Samsung 830 64GB SSD, which I wanted to install into a black Macbook 2,1 (2.16GHz) to use as a Plex server. It is not recognised by the Macbook, but can be recognised on a newer MBP 15". Apparently there is an issue because the drive is SATA III and the Macbook is SATA I. Is there any way to get around this? If not, what SSDs are compatible with that model?

If anyone can help out I would be so grateful!

I've no way of testing (my 2006 black MacBook died two years ago :(), but you may have better luck with a SATA II drive like the Intel 320.
