Update

I just installed my SSD this afternoon, and I'm really impressed with it so far. This thing is fast...a welcome change fom the stock hdd. I originally planned to do a clean install of Lion, but I decided to use carbon copy cloner instead (I guess I was feeling a little lazy today lol). So far I haven't had any problems, but I can always do a clean install later if I need to. I'm undecided on trim. I'll most likely leave it off unless I notice a drop in speed.

I do have a couple of post install questions:

1) I've read about people disabling the sudden motion sensor, safe sleep, and setting the SSD to never sleep. Are these things necessary, or can I just leave them alone?

2) I plan on using my old hdd (in an enclosure) for backups. Which do you recommend using ccc or time machine?

Thanks again for your help

Can anyone help me with the physical installation of the drive? I have only the Philips #00 screwdriver to open the bottom of the MBP but I don' t have the torx screwdriver. It' s absolutely necessary? Thanks!

You can get the little nubs off the side of the SSD with a pair of pliers if you do not have the Torx driver. It may scuff up the screw a little, but it won't matter.

i have an early 2011 15" base macbook pro, the sata port on my DVD Drive is a 6Gbps one so i am considering getting 2 Samsung 830 256GB SSD's and a Data Doubler i am wandering what sort of performence will i get out of this config in a RAID 0 Setup and if the system would be able to handle 2 SSD's in RAID?

thanks.

Just installed the 256GB version in my Mid 2009 MBP 13". It's a big different in startup time and application launches from the standard HDD. And the computer is very quiet now.
I guess the measured speed is all right when using SATA II.

Just purchased one of these for my Mac Mini - replacement for my Intel 520 120GB, due to them being competitively priced and Intel offering a refund on the 520s due to getting the AES specs wrong.

So thanks to all those who have posted info & experiences so I could assess whether this was a good course of action!

When does the price usually drop down to $199 for the 256 variants?
I've seen it happen twice in the past -- but now when I want to buy one the price has been floating around $250 for the past two weeks.

I recently ordered a 128GB version for my 13" MBP (Early 2011, 2.3 i5 Base Model) and was unsure about a few aspects of these drives. (I am new to the forums and apologize in advance if I am not posting the right way. )

1. Firmware: Is there a "Mac" way to check the firmware version on this SSD other than the "Windows & Samsung Magician" route? Also, is updating the firmware on these drives absolutely necessary before a clean install of OS X? (i.e. I know staying up to date is IMPORTANT, but are there major issues with OS X and the firmware that ships with these drives?)

2. Machine Specific Issues: Has anybody ran into problems with the 830s on Macs identical to mine?

I also plan on upgrading my RAM from the stock 4GB to 8GB of Samsung modules. (Before anyone points out the obvious priority of that upgrade. :) )

Thank you for your insight(s)!

1. No need to update your firmware. Samsung only released one update a while ago and if you just got the drive, you shouldn't need to update it.

2.You will have no issues with it. It's a beautiful drive. You made a right choice. You will also get SATAIII speeds with your machines, ie, the maximum possible with the drive.

thanks.

The SSD won't work at all in the optical bay on this model, nor the 17". Apparently works on 13". Thought to be cable issue. No reports whether fixed in 2012 refresh.

Issue is fixed in 15" 2012 cMBP [link]. Two SATA III SSDs in RAID 0 (in a 2012 cMBP) can potentially - if the following chart is to be believed - give read and write speeds approaching 1000 MB/s [link to graph - too big to insert in-line].

Installed mine today!

My god this thing is wicked fast! We are talking crazy fast...

I have just installed a 256 gb version tonight in my late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" - I installed it instead of my DVD (Never, ever use it) and everything is running like melting butter...

iPhoto, iTunes, Office 2011 and all the other "heavy" apps, are launching before my icons are hitting the dock on the first jump (back in standard hdd-days, the jumping icon could be 5 seconds before the app would start to show it self, and another 5 to be useable)

All joy...

just ordered mine for the new 2012 mbp.

Can someone recommend a good/cheap 16GB ram? Preferably from Amazon or Newegg. Normally I'd just get whatever is cheapest but since people have been having ram/ssd issues in the beginning of the thread, better safe than sorry.

I got corsair Mac ram off amazon for 99 bucks. Just need to search. Works perfectly

ordering a 256gb one tomo. does anyone know of one cheaper than £145 for this drive in the UK?
Cheers

Just finished installing it into my mbp 13" 2012.

Got really nervous because the gray screen took FOREVER when I first restarted. Currently it's taking about 38 secs to cold boot.

edit: just realized I forgot to set the startup disk to the new ssd. now boots in 10 secs or so.

I also got the following speedtest results. Does that look right to you guys?

I am running an 830 in the HDD bay and a 470 in an Optibay. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but what you say sounds wrong.

Early 2011 17".

edit: are you talking about sataIII speeds in the optibay?

Hi Guys!!

I have just bought this drive (256) and installed it into a Mid2009 MBP13" to replace the 160G HDD, 8Gb of crucial ram

After using CCC, i swapped the drives out but i kept getting major kernel panics and freezing etc and on occasion, would not even get to the desktop.

I then replaced it back with the original HDD and all works fine.

I decided to do a fresh clean install of OSX SL on the SSD with the usb adapter which went fine.

I put the SSD back into my MBP and it still hangs and locks out big time!!!

I have out the original HDD back in to get me up and running again, but i am stumped.

I am guessing it is the drive at fault, but after reading here i was wondering if it is the memory (which i have had replaced under warranty before).

Any help appreciated!!

maybe it was your hdd flex cable, try bootup your ssd in optical bay see if u still get the beachball?
