A prehaps more reliable and faster drive. What are the advantages of updating the 500GB Samsung EVO drives firmware?
Hi,
Model: MacBook Pro7.1
Sata II
Year: 2010
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo
OS X 10.8.5
RAM: 4GB
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
Firmware Revision: EXT0BB0Q
Bought a new Samsung EV0 840 (non-pro) installed as main drive, connected to MacBook Pro 13" model 7.1, with SATA II. Installed Trim Enabler (Groths.org). From the very beginning for a couple of weeks the disk was producing I/O errors, sometimes even did not boot correctly. After a couple of weeks the SSD was dead.
Sent it back and received a new replacement.
After installing a new one, enabled TRIM (Groths) again, ran Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test and had again I/O errors after about 1-5 mins of the drive test. Disabled TRIM and the test went well for about 4 hours, then I stopped the test.
After I tried to use a different TRIM enabler (Chameleon SSD Optimizer) and the Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test has been running well either (now already about 1 hour).
Does anyone have any strong opinion about:
a) TRIM ENABLED on Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250 GB (Yes/No)
b) if Yes, TRIM ENABLED with Chameleon or Groths?
Anyone experiencing similar issues?
Thank you very muchIt has been quite a nightmare and thought the MBP is dead, SATA cable to be replaced or the motherboard was dead....now I have some hopes
Sad to hear that! I am having the 750 GB version of 840 EVO with TRIM enabled (Groths) since day 1 of purchase and I haven't noticed any issues in a month and half of use.
By the way, how do you check I/O errors on Mac OS ?
Hi, there. Lucky you. Perhaps my problem is linked to SATA II, while with your MBP 2012 you have already a faster SATA III equipped motherboard...
I am checking a system log at the Mac's Console, located in Applications -> Utilities ->Console. When the SSD had a problem it looked like this:
Dec 06 01:00:00:37 XXX.MacBook.Pro kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O= error.
Dec 06 01:00:00:39 XXX.MacBook.Pro kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O= error.
Dec 06 01:00:00:41 XXX.MacBook.Pro kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O= error.
Maybe you only had a defective unit though.
All, I was able to install my new SSD (840 EVO 500GB) and can confirm that the ISO downloaded from the PC link (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/MZ-7TE1T0BW#) appeared to work.
Unfortunately my SSD has the latest firmware so I could not actually install the update. The bootdisk was able to see the SSD and was able to determine it had the latest firmware so it I would imagine this method would work.

After burning the BTSDK file three times in Disk Utility to a DVD and attempting to restart to the DVD, I surrender.
Looking at the contents, there doesn't even appear to be any mac related files.
There's config.sys and exe type files. So it appears Samsung 840 EVO staff is making fun of mac users.
As for encouraging people to download a windows file, I guess you load that onto a DVD/CD to make frisbees.
No, I'm not going to play with Linux files.
Finally, nothing really helped and had to put back the old HDD- Back to 70's. Probably the SATA II of the logic board to blame. HDD works fine. I hope someone from Apple or Samsung will with a firmware update to solve the issue.
So is trim required for best performance?
trim is required on samsung evo ssds for best performance and longevity.
How do you enable it? I'm about to receive mine soon. Thanks!
I've tried using a Bootcamp install on a second internal HDD to upgrade the internal SSD, but it didn't work for me. I used the Magician software that Samsung has available, but it doesn't detect my SSD.Has anyone tried to install firmware from a partition on their hard drive? I do not have an internal optical drive. The external one works well but, I cannot do the firmware upgrade with it. It boots and then hangs.
