I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 17" right now. How much worse are the colors?
Are they as bad as some of the cheap laptops from Dell I've seen?

I want to buy the 27" Display, but I'd probably have to sell my MacBook Pro to afford it.

Hmmmm. Too bad there are two thick bezels right in the middle of those 5120 pixels...

Indeed.

Usually for Photoshop, I have the image on one monitor and the tool palettes on the other, so the bezels don't really bother me. Would suck for games though.

Serious photo editing on a notebook screen is a joke anyways.

This seems to be a recurring answer. I didn't say serious editing (close and perfect are way different) and there are plenty of tethered shooters. Obviously a mobile ups display would help a lot. I'm surprised apple doesn't offer it but lenovo does.

As to the other question of how bad it is.... Hard to say, I'm still quantifying it. I will be using another calibrator this week to ensure mine isn't broken. Blue looks distinctly purple tonight.

These are the blues that was giving me trouble tonight.. and it's a non critical thing - but annoying. However.. I will say it appears I may have more going on than a screen issue... So I'll post back tonight. Meanwhile, air users.. what color is that lounger to you?

Thanks appleguy. That's the color it should be. It looks like I am having profiling problems - so maybe I can't give up yet. I may have actually sorted out the issue, we will see when I tackle a few other shots tomorrow.

fwiw - no vibrance was added to that shot.. it was a bright scene :) Arizona sun and all that. With this shot - that was the thing, I didn't do much to it out of camera.. so I was surprised I was seeing so much purple. Very mild contrast adjustment and some capture/creative sharpening... not much else. Oh - a little warm up of white balance for skin tone.

That lens tends to capture vibrant colors.

OP, sorry to hear this. I'm a word user, came from the mbp to the MBA and loved the extra pixels I got on the 13" and the super small form I got now on the 11". But that is clearly a completely different use from yours.

Just one question, why do you need a white ballance? I assume you shoot in raw? So you can see the composition, sharpness and other stuff you judge a photo by when shooting tethered or after a day in the field and worry about collors and saturation later on?
I'm not a pro photog, I haven't touched a decent camera in years, but that is how friends of mine do it. And they seem to know their stuff.

The color on my iPhone is hard blue, no hints of purpl anywhere. On my MBA 11" 2011 with LG screen it looks rather the same. But the skin colors are a lot better on my MBA compared to my iPhone. It's a pity I don't have the mbp with me this week to compare it on that one as well. Oh, my MBA has still got the factory settings.

Yah, the theory is that I don't want my camera developing shots for me.

So the question about the color really has to be answered by the air users - because I can test on other devices, but I was wondering what other air users were seeing relative to mine.

Anyway, it seems like when I reinstalled adobe stuff it may have helped - along with trashing a bucketload of prefs.

I appreciate all the help btw - thanks to all participating.

On both my iPad 1 and my new 13" mba (LG display), the couch is a vibrant blue. Also, the first girl's straps on her flipflops are the same vibrant blue as the couch; her dress has a nice vibrant red in it. As for the second girl, she has a purple top that is not all that vibrant. On both devices, all of the colors look the same.

After a longer look, the red, in the girl's dress, isn't that vibrant.

On the ipad and mba or just the mba.. or is that a general observation?

As I said, this is just about out of camera - there's next to nothing done (compared to most development) - and no added vibrance (because I already felt it was vibrant enough). I need to look at the raw on another computer because I see an orange tint in the red portions of the dress... which it may well have been.

Don't get a MBA if you want brilliant vibrant colours, simple.

However, I do find skin colour is more accurate on the MBA compared to my MBP.

I was speaking mainly of the mba. On the iPad, I do see a tad more vibrance of the red, but also, it does have a tint of orange. On the mba, not really orange.

After looking at this picture long enough, I think looks different. My eyes need a break.;)

h00ligan, I viewed this on my MBP earlier and it was very very vibrant.

I'm looking at it now on my MBA 13" (LG) and it looks less vibrant (as we've been discussing) but all colours are correct. Blue is blue etc.

If you have purple tones, you have a problem with your Air...

Apple really should offer BTO IPS screens on the airs.

*EDIT* unless they are IPS already?

Yes LG.

You know, as a photographer, I'm not sure if the Pro would've been the best result for you? Surely the image on the Pro is maybe too falsely vibrant? I like it because I'm in Web Design and looks good for clients, but as a photographer (my best friend is) I would've thought it'd be misleading.
