I'd probably take a more purer design over shock resistance if it meant no seams though tbh.

I actually don't mind the seams — even more so if they're there to help protect the phone from shock. It gives the phone a more 'industrial' look and feel. Can't wait.

I wouldn’t say its god-awful ugly. It’s definitely not what I had expected from apple. Seams let in particles, which get inside of the screen. Oh please apple; kill the seams!

Not so much if they're fully blocked off with a rubber seal.. much as the screen surround is already on current phones, probably for similar reasons. to give it enough wiggle room to try and absorb shock.

I want to *touch* the seams. Mmmmm. The new iPhone better have them. Yum, yum. :p Lots of them......

If the seams aren′t what it seems, they blew it!

New iPhone′s name is...iSeam!!!!!!

I'm guessing here but couldn't the fact they're using rubber seals help fit/finish .. meaning the tolerance of the case could be slightly more lenient and make the device still feel solid - maybe even more so than purely plastic on plastic even if manufactured to high standard...

Just gives a little expansion point to help reduce rattle (not that i've had a rattling iphone)

I think it would be quite funny if they just have the seams so it is easy to take apart the pre-production model and then here people are discussing what type of rubber is used to fill in the seams. I'm sure I'm probably wrong, but I hope not just for this reason. I could care less if the phone has seams or no seams or if the seams are made out of rubber or concrete.

I wonder why the top seam is offset to one side. It's weird when there is so much attention to detail in the aesthetic of all Apple products, look at the screw placement on everything. Always symmetrical.

The seams simply don't do what you suggest. To access the connectors that hold the seams together one must completely disassemble the phone.

Moreover, the internals of the phone are designed around the rubber connectors, which seems very unlikely for a temporary feature of the prototype case.

I still have a feeling that the seams are there as sensors for expose-like multitasking in iPhone OS 4

Exactly. The seams look horrible. If they gotta be there at least paint them.
When you get your hands on one, paint them and see how that works out for you.

The seams look fine. Everyone is making a HUGE deal out of NOTHING.

In other words, the seams are just shock dampers. Ask any engineer...they should agree with my analysis.

I happen to think these are where the air bags deploy from when the accelerometer detects a free-fall.

Multitasking will be accomplished through the new app manager though with home button.

I think he knows that. He is merely posing an alternative method of activating multitasking (specifically through a expose-like view)

I think that kind of redundancy would be very unlikely. I think it would be really cool if they were SOME sort of sensors though. But I think the most likely theory is exactly what is stated in this thread

Now THIS is an idea I can get on board with!! :p

Interesting thought. You squeeze the phone like the old mighty mouse and it trips a microswitch that exposes something (like multitasking).

And that's why a unibody (a la iPad) wouldn't work for the iPhone - because it won't flex. Hmmmm.
