It was a professionally designed vehicle meant to do that speed. I'd expect it to be reasonably survivable when it all goes wrong. You see some incredibly terrible crashes in F1 or WRC racing and in general they walk away from it.

I'm glad that this was the same and that the multiple safety systems worked.

WTF... .. by JC ?!?!?

Very appropriate for this episode, but please get back to normal from now on!

I think you missed the point. This was a very unsubtle dig at the one-sidded, dangerous policy of the UK government. He was simply showing that speed on it's own does not kill. Inappropriate speed in inadequate machinery might kill but on it's own speed does not.

Hmm... indeed... didn't think of it that way.

The fact that Hammond wasn't killed (even didn't suffer permanent injuires), does show how well safety measures have come. And strangely the speed policy of the UK (or NL for that matter) haven't changed conform today's better safety.

You'd expect the car to explode in a debris field at 230mph!

What exasperated it, was the complete and total unsuitability of the location.

Had it been lined with a concrete guardrail he'd have jumped out of the wreck.

Really dull show though.

But the overall infrastructure itself hasn't really changed since the '60's, at least it hasn't here. The increase in the volume of traffic, or cars of various era's sharing the same roads, etc etc.

I haven't read any of your posts 'cause I don't want to spoil it for myself...

...come on bit torrent! I need my Top Gear! It's been way too long.

But we have much improved tyre technology allowing or cars to be stopped significantly quicker if we were able to use them to their max. New cars tend to have all round disc brakes as opposed to rod operated drums that would struggle to max out the rubbish tyres from the 60s. We have ABS and active stability systems allowing us to steer around trouble whilst braking at maximum force. We have seat belts, aribags...

Really the speed policy is a bad thing. Lets get rid of the cameras and get real cops back on the roads policing speed with discretion and catching the real dangerous drivers who drive under the limits but without using their mirrors, driving too close to the cars in front, using the wrong lanes, weaving around, driving whilst drunk or on drugs. Cameras don't catch any of that. Even the government say that speed is not a contributory factor in more than 50% of crashes!

Hear hear!

I absolutely agree.
A speed camera cannot judge driving... it can only measure speed. Ofcourse, excessive (and therefore dangerous) speed can be penalised by them, but dangerous driving cannot.
The danger in traffic is caused by bad driving. Not just speed.

The problem is that excessive speed is not a constant for a given piece of road. It may be perfectly safe to blast up the motorway at 120mph when it's dry and the road is empty, but it's pretty damn stupid doing 70mph up the same road when it's busy and foggy.

The problem is that this assumes that people are sensible. As usual it's the nutters who spoil it for all.

Unfortunately I might be considered to be a nutter in that I slide round roundabouts in 30 zones sometimes

But the roads are not full of new cars. There's a mix of cars from several era's, utilising different technologies, they have to be taken into consideration as well.

The same goes for the roads, many roads are still paved with traditional asphalt mixes, not the high adhesion modern surfaces that currently exist, but are prohibitively expensive to lay, that are only used for small sections on known accident black spots.

Of course technologies such as ABS, DSC, TC, DBW, BBW etc have made cars generally safer and better performing, but there is also evidence that such technologies instill a false sense of security in drivers of modern cars, and thus they are more willing to take risks. Take ABS for example, I'd lay money on the average driver believing that it'll always reduce their stopping distance. Yet in many conditions (dry, snowy, low adhesion wet) it'll often increase, and dramatically so, the stopping distance of the car.

I couldn't agree with you more.

It's usually there by 2mora night. I wait for that moment as well, as I have a catalogue downloaded from Series 4 onwards. Much harder to find the older ones.

:p

That's the new one. The old stuff is probably not worth tracking down. It was a much more serious car show with real reviews and such!

Pfft! :D

Look at how empty the studio is in that season 1 shot. You see that the audience are just looking at the cars in the studio while JC talks throughout the early seasons.. they just aren't interested in him at all, its quite funny. Changed so much now.

I'm not sure why. He was on the old TG for years before it was canned and they built the new show around him. They basically had to as the viewing figures for the old show were dying. They sacked the entire production staff etc and built the new show. The old crew went to Channel 5 and started making 5th Gear which is now terrible.

I'm actually feeling quite nervous watching this, knowing how it ends up...
I was cringing, especially at a few of the things he said before hand. I'm amazed he's alright after that but I did almost expect it to look worse considering how fast he was going.

Brilliant show, brilliant episode!

Yeah, start of the 'new' top gear. Series 1/2 will have that fat bloke instead of JM then, eh? I couldnt believe how many folk they had in last night, it was packed.

If this show is the most watch show on the planet, the why on god's earth is it not on iTunes !!!!!

Glad the hamsters back to normal :)
