I was expecting May and Hammond to be good as they've both played instruments before, but I was impressed with Clarkson. He's one person I'd never imagined to be musical at all, and it's not bad for only a few lessons.

As a bassist I'm biased towards Hammond, I was extremely pleased to see him playing using his fingers rather than a plectrum, as seems to be so popular these days.

I agree, I'm a bassist myself. I use a plec in my (ex)band, just to get that "punk" P-bass tone and attack. At home I stick with Jazz style pickups and play with my fingers.

Yeh I knew James was a good keyboards player, but the one who really surprised me was Hamster. He's actually a half good player (although it was difficult to hear exactly what he was doing).

Jeremy was, I suppose not too bad. Although (not wishing to blow my own trumpet), I've never had a single lesson, and only had a drum kit since christmas and I'm a gazillion times ahead of that...

Another Bass player here!

Hamster was pretty good. I play with both pick and fingers, I'm slowly learning slap too.

I think I see where the confusion might have been:
In the first link (the one that brought about the discussion of whether or not TG would be back) it was said that Top Gear would be back with a new series in the summer.

Clarkson, now, has said it will be back in the fall.

So, when Jeremy replied/commented on the first statement and said it wasn't correct, he may only have been referring to the time ("season") of its return for the next series.

Or something like that.

Edit: Also, the Travis single, I was fast-forwarding through it (like you do), and it actually sounded great that way. Nice and folky, upbeat. Try it, Quicktime and just hold the fast-forward button through the song.
Edit 2: Gotta love Clarkson pulling the plug on Jizzy Tissue and the chart from last week ("recorded live last Sunday" - James May)!
Edit 3: The acts they had were terrible. Really. Bah. Who is this Supergrass, anyway?
Edit 4: Sneaky lyrics-writing by McFly... But, at least it was some classic bluesy/rock stuff. Better than the rest of the acts
Edit 5: Hahaha, Billy Ocean! Really, the guys weren't too bad. Well, Clarkson wasn't great at the beginning... well, point is it wasn't too terrible. +1 for Hamster and Captain Slow knowing how to play.

If a US version is different hosts and whatnot, I'll probably watch it. But nothing will ever replace the real Top Gear.

It's supposed to be keeping Clarkson etc. Just be re-recorded to feature U.S. cars and celebs.

They're so going to have to tone down the yank bashing though.

Clarkson does like some US cars, if you've seen his dvd from last year, but he hates Pickups. I only like a few US cars, like the Mustang, (Roush:D) and the Ford Gt.

BBC Top Gear in US TV deal talks.

Considering they don't have enough material to fill 6 UK episodes... hmmmm.

It will be crap, at least for someone used to the "regular" show. Hamster likes musclecars, May likes staid sedans (plenty of those here), but Clarkson will hate everything. Funny that he's the only one to have bought a Ford lately...I can't wait to see Clarkson driving a Tahoe, the Hamster in a Pontiac G5 and May in a Buick LaCrosse...:D

Still, I'd like to see them review American cars, but if they try to "Americanise" Top Gear they will ruin it. I saw the "Americanised" episodes on the Discovery Channel and they were lame in retrospect: they cut out almost all the banter, because they probably thought Americans wouldn't understand UK slang. Then they eliminated the "star in a reasonably priced car" section because they were mostly UK personalities...and of course they would probably excise Jeremy's anti-American jokes.

Those alterations would give the show all the attraction of a re-heated Taco Bell dinner.

By the way, I was watching a bunch of old Jeremy Clarkson (with hair) clips on You Tube - I think the show seemed a lot more engaging when they just drove cars and talked about cars, rather than all the theatrics of the recent series...
