I think one of the problems with TG at the moment is that JC writes the entire script. I really enjoy the show and have watched it for years but the dialogue seems to be getting a bit stale. Perhaps they should get JM to write a few episodes.

I like JC for being pretty much shameless, especially with his mouth. I agree with the comment that JM is more naturally funny. RH is good too though, he adds something to the show you can't put your finger on :p

One thing is for sure:
The three of them together are more than the sum of all parts... ;)

They all have a few "annoyances", but that makes them look like real life human beings, rather than some Hollywood-made stars who are perfect, but also have one "perfect" flaw...

The reason why this show is so enjoyable, is that is simply is about 3 different blokes who are funny and are wildly enthusiastic about cars.
Sure, the show is scripted, but I am sure that JC, JM and RH all really are themselves when doing the road tests, or races or doing the news.

The only thing a bit iffy on the show is the "star in a reasonably priced car". Watching them crash on the track is fun, but the interview is mostly boring.

Oh well.. gotta wait till October before we get to see new episodes.

Absolutely - hit the nail on the head there...

I normally quite enjoy them, but then again quite a few of the stars aren't really well known outside of the UK, so I can see where you foreigners™ are coming from.

top gear and fifth gear explanation.

I've been watching top gear for a while and have heard numerous references to fifth gear. does the bbc have 2 car shows? do they appeal to different markets or is fifth gear more serious (not hard to do )?

also: the whole fire references is that just clarkson being himself or is there any substantial grasp to fifth gear?

The BBC dropped the old-style Top Gear in 2001. The production team took the program format, most of the presenters, and started making Fifth Gear on Channel 5.

The current Top Gear format has little to do with the old Top Gear ( now Fifth Gear ) and was pitched to the BBC by Clarkson, and Andy Wilman ( occasional old Top Gear presenter, and producer of many of Clarkson's other TV series ) - and the BBC took it on board from October 2002.

So now - Top Gear is on BBC2 on Sunday Nights, and Fifth Gear is usually on Channel 5 on Monday nights.

I watch Top Gear religiously - but don't bother with Fifth Gear. So dull, so boring, so desperate to be as popular as Top Gear, but failing so badly.

I think the Nissan GT-R can beat the Caparo when the slightly better, much more expensive version is released.

Absolutely no way that will happen for 2 very important reasons.

1. Power-to-weight ratio will still be vastly inferior.
2. It won't generate anywhere near comparable levels of downforce, which is the main reason why the T1 can do what it does.

I agree totally! Fifth Gear seems to be just trying too hard to be what Top Gear is and failing.

Fifth Gear is pretty dull - although I thought Tom Ford's reviews in CAR magazine were pretty good. Fifth Gear reminds me of Car and Driver in the US - boring. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a "MPV cupholder shootout" comparison.

I'll relate you back to the Hammond flipping the Bedford Rascal, then Fifth Gear then flipping one.

But Tom Ford is a good motoring journalist, I enjoy his stuff in Top Gear magazine.

Yeah, he is a decent motoring jounilist, and I did think the thing Fifth Gear done on used cars was interesting.

The show just misses something, though, dosent it?

Who is that new presenter on Fifth Gear?

Totally unnecessary and zero screen charisma, Jonny Smith is much much better at doing more traditional motoring stories.

Although Jonny pales next to Quentin Willson.

I quite like how 5th Gear actually occasionally review cars that I might buy.

Anyway, my 6 year old nephew wrote to Top Gear a couple of weeks ago, suggesting how their amphibious vehicle project might be improved and challenged them to drive off Boscome pier (on the south of England.)

They could have ignored his letter, but hats off to the production staff who gave him a polite response "considering" his offer complete with signed photos and goodies. Jolly good show!:)

BTW, this is a real nephew and not some stunt to try and gets the boys' autographs!
