To add to the Best Buy bashing, I was at Wal-Mart the other day and found a router for $129 that Best Buy was selling for $189. I wanted to get the Reward Zone points, so I took the tag from the Wal-Mart item along with a picture on my phone to the Best Buy two blocks away. After waiting for an eternity in the customer service line, I get to the desk and explained the situation, showed the price tag, and the photo with the date/time stamp. The BB employee calls the Wal-Mart for the price check and was told by the drone that they didn't even sell that model of router. She then speaks to her manager, shows him the photo and price tag. The manager decided to be nice and offer me $20 off of the $189 router. Seriously???

Why would I give them $169 for something that is $129 down the street? I declined. Since it was getting late, I decided to go home and skip buying the thing from Wal-Mart. Yesterday I was looking at Bestbuy.com and found the airport extreme base station for $119.

I win!

As long as one is reasonably intelligent, Best Buy is a fine place to shop.

It's always useful to remember that customer service experiences here are not the norm as the forums are often a gathering place for people with questions/ concerns/ problems.

As well as people who are hyper-critical of aspects they think are common sense. I'm not saying thats the case but I think every forumer here has had a time where they asked an employee a question and you ended up explaining it to them and teaching them something...

I don't trust warranties as much if they don't come through the manufacturer.
Just curious, but
1) Was BB suppose to cover accidents under their warranty?
2) How much was the "upgrade" for the MBP?

Yeah, Bestbuy is good for getting a new computer under their terms, but I'm not sure if they would be subpar with Apple repair quality.

My mom got warranty for her Netbook through SquareTrade. Who knows how the hell that will work if its needed.
I heard ST is pretty good though.

1) Yes, she purchased their all-encompassing warranty that covers accidental as well as manufacturer problems. It cost a ton, too. nearly 50% of the price of the original computer.

2) It ended up working out like this - my friend had an $944 BB credit, so we got the 13" MBP price matched down to $999 from Microcenter. She paid the $114 or so difference after taxes, and after their incredible blunder, she walked out with a $1499 MBP.

I got my (and my brother's identical model) MBP there. The people there were very nice. I started off with an open-box 2.26GHz model. I left there and paid around $1029 for the whole thing with a MDP-VGA adapter. I was happy. Then the 2.4GHz models came out abut 9 days later. I took it back and exchanged for the 2.4GHz model and paid an extra $100 or so... And the guy who originally helped me, helped me that time.. I didn't have to pay any restocking fee. Then that machine decided not to wake up from sleep unless I dragged a small magnet over the sleep sensor. I took it back to Best Buy. I saw the same sales associate there who originally helped me. I explained to him the issue, and he handed me a brand new machine. I was happy. But then this machine decided that the backlit keyboard did not exist (and this was about a week after purchase). When I had my finger over the ambient light sensor, the backlight would not come on. I hit the backlight-up button, to no avail. I reset SMC, PRAM and even booted into safe mode. Nothing worked. I took it back, and to my luck, I got the same exact guy who helped me in the first place. He was understanding, and wanted to attempt to reproduce the issue (and getting tons of fingerprints on the screen). He was successful. He handed me back a new machine and I left there happy.

Fast forward to about 3 months ago (about 7 months after the initial 2.26GHz purchase): the control key decided to fail, and the machine decided not to go to sleep. I took it in to the Genius Bar, explained the issues, and the genius was very understanding. I even explained how my battery was at 89% capacity after 230 cycles and a battery calibration, and how my HDD always beeps randomly. He said he would note it.

About 8 days later: I got the machine back. They had replaced the topcase, battery, HDD, HDD cable, internal speakers, and magsafe board.

Then about 2 months or so after that: I noticed dust under my screen (which I suspect to have been there ever since the replacement machine [from best buy] was handed to me). I took it to the genius bar, along with a couple of MacBooks that needed firmware passwords to be applied. The genius and I spent about 10 minutes doing so. When I explained the issue with dust under my MBP's screen, he said "oh. We will need to send that to the repair depot; we can't do that repair here." It sounded like he didn't want me to get the repair done. I said "I know. It's okay. I have all of my information backed up, and I can afford to be without the machine for a week or so." He said fine, that's what we will do. I got the computer back about 5 days later, and they had replaced the entire display assembly! But, even though I had them note that I had a firmware password on my computer and what it is, they reset my firmware password anyway.... ARGHHHHHH

Edit: This thread made me grateful for my 3 years of AppleCare, so I added it in my signature.

Edit 2: Oh and my current 2.4GHz MBP was purchased on 4/24/10. Almost 10 months!

I actually just went through kind of a similar moronic experience with Best Buy. Although my issue was with a TV that was still in its 30 day instore warranty, I was also treated like ****... noone wanted to help me, I was flat out lied to, and the store employees would just hang up on me.

I finally had to go to the corporate level and even then there were plethra of screw ups before everything was fixed. At the end, I was given 200.00 off the new TV and a 300.00 gift card for the HUGE inconvience I was caused. The whole ordeal from begining to end lasted 2 months. This was the first and last time (with the exception of the xbox/kinect Im buying with the BB gift card) I will ever buy ANYTHING from Best Buy. I too wonder how they are able to stay in business with such crappy service. Amazon is the best retailer imo, wonderful customer service!

I wouldn't say that. I know plenty of people who are reasonably intelligent, albeit not that tech savvy, who have been misinformed by the automatons at Best Buy.

You shouldn't have to be an expert on whatever it is you're intending to buy not to get ripped off.

Agree 100% - never had a single issue with Amazon, they always come through.

TL DR... Ok I did read it. BB is lame.

That sucks. Decent customer service is almost impossible to find today. The customer is always right, you should be kissing their *** in this economy for continued business.

There is nothing wrong with buying a computer or anything at Best Buy. Do your homework first and know what you are buying before you go in is key.

Extended warranties are like car insurance. The whole reason they exist is because most people don't use them.

That sucks. Like everything else in the world, it greatly depends on the staff at the particular store. A long time ago I purchase a Nokia Booklet 3G and it was fabulous and all but I hated the grainy screen. I only used it for like...14 hours ;) :p I took it back expecting to pay restocking fee and all. The person at the counter opened it up, looked at everything and asked if it's ever been used; I said yes. She puts everything back and says, "Nobody has to know." No restocking fee for me. I was so happy I walked out laughing and skipped all the way to my truck.

I've since purchase a pack of gum, an 8-pack of triple A batteries and a pair of Sennheisers from Best Buy. I love that store and go back as much as possible.

My story is kind of similar. I dropped my MBP and the screen would't close at all. I kind of forced it to close and after a few times of forcing it, it closed. It was okay but it was still scraping the screen aganinst the top case. The screen got really misaligned after I dropped it, so I used that as my excuse for the repair. He gladly took it from me (genius at Apple store with standard warranty) and said it was a common defect and it should be reseated by tonight. Well he called later saying that they had to other a new screen assemble ... so I waited some more time. Then I got a call saying they needed a new logic board and some other stuff. That was fine with me, but there was nothing wrong with the old one. I finally got it back after a week and the computer had a loose screen and I simply wasn't going to take it. In the end, they gave me a new MBP right from the box. They only gave me the computer though; so I called Apple and they sent me the CDs for the computer.

So I got $1150 in repairs done to my old computer (ridiculous pricing!)
I got a brand new one ($1200)
I got 5 months extra warranty that I didn't have
I got a free upgrade to iLife 11

Pretty good experience overall. I plan on buying AppleCare for this.
When the Genius was swapping my MBP, he asked me which MBP I had. It looks like he was about to give me any one I would have said since it was a completely different guy :D

Whoa whoa whoa.
lol
Whoa whoa whoa what?

Yes. I made sure that I understood this before I stepped foot in BB. I was prepared for them to offer me their warranty, and after reading all of the horror stories that involve repair and BB, I decided to wait about 8 months into the purchase of my MBP, and buy Care. I had a great experience with Care with my previous 2.2GHz White MacBook. That is why I went with Care rather than BB. When we were checking out, my dad said "you should get this warranty. It's better than Apple because it is 4 years vs. 3 years." I said "No. It is my money, and I have heard horror stories about any repairs involving Best Buy, and I want to get AppleCare instead." This just goes to show that their gimmicks will sway the average consumer.

Oh and I bought my AppleCare from B&H photo for a great discount. I paid $175 for it. My brother got his from the same retailer as well.

When my dad bought his 2.66GHz 20" iMac, I was unable to go to BB with him, so my brother went with him. If my brother had not gone, he may have ended up with a 24" iMac that he couldn't afford and Best Buy's (excuse the language) ****** warranty. My brother was there to make sure that he got what he went there to get, and nothing else. Somehow, he got AppleCare at Best Buy for his iMac. I didn't even know they sold AppleCare there....

Best Buy isn't the best buy. For the last couple of years I've been buying my electronic needs at amazon, newegg, owc... Just check the prices and buy from the place that has the best price. It's not like best buy makes the computers they sell.

I have generally passed on these warrantees, but I did purchase one once back when HDTV receivers were new and exciting. It was only $40 on a $500 box though. I can't imagine paying $400 on a $900 purchase. That's simply nuts.

Mine did pay off though, at Circuit City. The tuner died and they just gave me a CC gift card for the original purchase price plus tax. They even refunded the prorated balance of unused extra warranty.

Yeah, CC was great about their extended warranties. I bought a VCR at Best Buy and was thinking it would be about the same with them.... Yeah, stupid on my part. I'll just give you the short end that after all the run around I got with them, and in particular one of the incidents of dealing with them about that VCR I absolutely refuse to give Best Buy another dime of my money. I would have rather not paid the plan and just bought another VCR than deal with the crap they gave me (including lying to me with some really stupid lies they expected me to believe).

I only dealt with it cause it got to be the principle of the matter with me. After I finally got them to replace the cursed thing (rather than giving me the run around fixing something I knew they never were going to be able to fix as it was some weird electrical issue) I vowed never to go back (I also got the, "Do you want an extended warranty on that?" of which I politely said, "Sorry, but after that, I don't ever want to deal with you guys again." I think the last experience was my only decent experience with them but it was far far too late).

IMO, if you're preparing/ ed to spend a sizable amount of money on a major electronics purchase (like say a laptop), you have the responsibility to preform the research necessary to inform yourself on the purchase.

You wouldn't buy a house/ car/ other major purchase without preforming research (or so I would assume), why would an electronics purchase of similar importance be any different?

I bought my MBP from Best Buy because I was too impatient to wait for shipping. They didn't mention any protection plan to me. I didn't want it but I do wonder why?

Buy from Amazon or Apple directly. Best Buy is the Kmart of electronics. I've seen more professional employees at my local Chik-Fil-A.

this.

I went to a best buy to kill time in a smaller town while i was there over christmas.. Man what a joke. I was killing time and helped out 2 people at the apple area. "I know u dont work here but what about xyz..."

i cringe whenever i get a BB gift card. luckliy $25 BB GC sold for $23 in amazon credits is worth much more than original BB card hah.

I didn't know you had to register when u first launched ur mac.. Is this just for the warranty? What if u don't register?

thx
