The iPhone is a bit of a special case. It appears that there is an update every year and the followers like to get the latest model as it comes out. O2 know this now, so why don't they offer a 12 month contract and up the price of the initial purchase and increase the rental a little to compensate. They are either stupid of very shrewd and know that a lot will buy out and sign up again. They pissed me off last year with the 3GS so I vowed no more contracts with O2. Their loss. I will go PAYG again this year in the knowledge this time next year I am not under their thumb hoping for a so called "generous" offer.

Thats exatcly what I'm doing; my 3G contract ran out in Feb, I've been waiting for the new model so that I can buy a PAYG and be in a situation to upgrade every year, if I so choose!

Are you sure that's not just the American pricing as we know those prices are the same as the previous year? All we care about here is how much it will cost in the UK!

There was a screen shot a few pages back of this chat.

I just hope we he went through apple.com/uk and not just .com :p

It also gives me a chance to change and try networks. O2 told me 3G would be in my area imminently when I got the 3G two years ago. Definitely very soon was told last year when I got the 3GS. They have done nothing, all I have is a weak 2G signal. When asked this time told there is no plans for any improvements. Three, O2 and T-Mobile have come on leaps and bounds.

So mazuma will gobe me £227 fr my 16GB 3GS. and if I pay out the £220 on my contract, and then but the iPhone 4 can I keep my rariff?? Such as unlimited text bolt on?

Sounds good to me!

@stiss, I doubt an extra £5 a month would pay for how much the carrier subsidises the contract phones. It's only an extra £60 over the course of 12 months.

Does anyone know how much notice you need to give 02 to cancel a current contract that has run out? Their site says new users get the exact same discount as upgrading users so there is no incentive for me to stay on with them. I'm about 21 months into an 18 month £35 per month iphone 3g contract and if they aren't going to do me a deal, I was going to cancel today so I can pre-order with whoever I want and probably payg on tuesday. I don' use many minutes or too many texts (get 600 mins + 600 texts, never use more than 50 mins + 200-300 texts) so reckon if I get payg I will barely have to top up and 02 did free data for a year on payg last time.

If you're out of contract, then you're overpaying by sticking with the same deal. It may be a bit late now if you're upgrading, but have a look at these O2 iPhone Simplicity deals.

You can get exactly the same benefits for less money, and you give just one month's notice to cancel.

New to this PAYG stuff!

Never purchased a PAYG before. I'm coming over to the UK in two weeks for a visit and wish to purchase a iPhone 4 32GB - provided it is released on PAYG.

Do I need to present relevant documents or ID to get one activated and working.

I plan to use it for 5 weeks in the UK then when I go back, use it in South-East Asia using a software unlock (if one is available by then!).

I've got a UK credit card and debit card BUT these are registered my address abroad.

If this is possible, then I would be eager to pre-order one before I come over! Also, just wondering if I could unlock it officially still after 3 month period even though I using it abroad?

Yea I know I'm overpaying but by the time I realised, there was only a month to this and thought I couldn't be bothered with the hassle to change. Just phoned o2 to cancel and they said it wasn't a month and I could just cancel there and then. I also found out that if i cancel now and get a pac code, I can't go back to o2 on the same number so might cancel once i've found out what i want to go with. If change my contract now to a 12 month simplicity contract, i can just get the iphone on payg when it comes out and use the simplicity sim if i ask for a micro sim cant I?

I am REALLY pleased about this: http://www.three.co.uk/Phones/iPhone

Exactly what I was hoping for. 3UK will have 98% uk 3G coverage by the end of this year and they have the most up to date equipment and backend. I am delighted!

That is excellent news. I just hope they do it on PAYG. It may come with a 12 month free internet if they do similar to O2. I would rather do that than get an O2 one and swap the SIM for a Three after unlocking.

Wow, Three on as well. We really are spoilt for choice in the UK...I guess we get one over the Americans in one way :p

Here's to hoping O2 release their pricing today...

So if every major network is getting this phone will there be any point in having them all locked?

It does make you wonder if Apple is going for the nuclear option of selling unlocked handsets in the UK - it would really boost their sales, if people don't have to faff about with trying to get the handset unlocked.

A lot depends on the price if Apple do sell them unlocked. If it' the same price as locked from a carrier like O2 but the locked one comes with 12 months free internet then you need to think a bit. 12 Months of O2 internet is £120.

I'm really really pleased that Three have joined in! They are usually the network to be left behind. Suppose it's only Virgin Mobile left to join in on the party.

I hope Three come out with some deal breaking tariffs like they did with the iPad data plans but obviously highly unlikely with Apple's control.

True, but that's assuming people are using them PAYG - lots of people are on SIM only plans now and just moving carriers to get the best deals as they arise, hence the 12 months free internet is kind of academic as they won't be using the handset with the PAYG sim supplied at purchase.

I'm just waiting on Tesco mobile confirming that they will offer Micro Sims, then I think I'll leave O2 and Simplicity for iPhone behind.....

Where Are The Prices?

It is really pissing me off that we still have no pricing details in the U.K. even though iPhone 4 was announced several days ago and pre-ordering is just around the corner.

To me it suggests a certain contemptuous disregard for the customer or just plain ineptitude and inefficiency.

I know you've all probaby worked this out but thought it was interesting to find out. I bought the PAYG 32gb 3GS on launch day 2009 and used my simplicity sim in it (£20 a month). If I upgrade to the 4G on launch day and trade in my phone on ebay/recycle sites I will end up paying EXACTLY the same money as I would have paid if i was on an 18 month contract. Workings below:

PAYG/simplicity route
Original cost of phone: £549
Contract length and cost: 12 months at £20 (£240)
Buyout cost for early upgrade: £0
Ebay/Recycle old iPhone trade-in price: £350
Total money paid over 12 months = £439

18month contract route
Original cost of phone: £249
Contract length and cost: 12 months at £35 (£420)
Buyout cost for early upgrade: 6 months @ £20 (£120)
Ebay/Recycle old iPhone trade-in price: £350
Total money paid over 12 months = £439

So conclusion is o2 know exactly what they are doing and this isn't an "offer" at all.

I haven't made a decision as to how i'm upgrading to 4G on launch day but i'm inclined to stay on the PAYG/simplicity route as it means i won't be hoping o2 repeat this early buyout clause in the years to come and am free to upgrade every cycle if i deem the latest iPhone upgrade to warrant it.
