It would just be a ridiculous situation where most, if not all of the networks were offering the iPhone and Apple were carrying stock of 6 or 7 different carrier locked phones, of both 3GS and 4 (16gb & 32gb) models.
Ridiculous, but I wouldn't bet against it... :(

Not in my case.

PAYG/simplicity route
Original cost of phone: £405 (32GB 3GS Brand new and sealed from ebay)
Contract length and cost: 12 months at £25 (£300)
Quidco Cashback: -£200
Buyout cost for early upgrade: £0
Ebay/Recycle old iPhone trade-in price: £599
Total money paid over 12 months = £0
Profit = £94

So you bought the 32gb 3GS on launch day / within launch month for £405 and sold it recently for £50 more than it retails for? How is that even possible

I think you didn't get an answer because no ones knows yet for sure until they announce more details.

I mean, judging from the 3gs launch.

Did apple do upgrades then? Do apple do upgrades now?

Do apple still do brand new contracts in store?

And it would have cost him at least £50 in eBay/PayPal fees. The best eBay prices are around £400 for a used 3GS, minus fees = £350. Time to get the calculator out again chief.

Apple don't do upgrades, they don't have the account info needed. They will do brand new contracts I'm sure.

Yeah i'm pretty certain he has his calculations wrong. To think anyone would pay £50 more than retail for a used iphone is a bit absurd, unless he has just sold it to a Nigerian and hasn't received the money yet ;)

At the 3GS launch they did new contracts and PAYG. They had to run O2's system on one of their Mac's running under Windows which annoyed the Apple salesperson to hell as it kept crashing. I don't think they have the facilities to do the same in depth analysis capabilities as an O2 shop can on your current account to do upgrades.

Anyone can answer?

Never purchased a PAYG before. I'm coming over to the UK in two weeks for a visit and wish to purchase a iPhone 4 32GB - provided it is released on PAYG.

Do I need to present relevant documents or ID to get one activated and working.

I plan to use it for 5 weeks in the UK then when I go back, use it in South-East Asia using a software unlock (if one is available by then!).

I've got a UK credit card and debit card BUT these are registered my address abroad.

If this is possible, then I would be eager to pre-order one before I come over! Also, just wondering if I could unlock it officially still after 3 month period even though I using it abroad?

Anyone could help? I think this is lost in this large thread! :(

Some people don't seem to know the true value of things, even on bay. I made £96 on mine after 20 months.

Apple can do upgrades on o2 and Voda. Upgraded both my 3gs last year in Apple Regent Street.

Actually had to show the guy how to do it, used to work for o2. Was new to them then and the guy was unsure. Took all of 3 minutes to do each handset. :):)

Doing the same this year, have an old staff tariff so get upgraded every 12 months.

What is unknown at the moment is if O2 or whoever will unlock the phone straight away or only after a period. If you are back abroad you may not be able to unlock from there. Though I don't see why not if it's done via iTunes. I think things may become a lot clearer on or before pre-order day.

No it's not. On my iPhone 2G I pay £15 / month* for unlimited texts and unlimited internet from O2. Even better, it all goes into call credits, so every month the amount of call credit I have goes up by £15. By now I have about £90 on my balance. I'm hoping I can use that towards iPhone 4, but that might be wishful thinking.

* Actually they have an £10/month offer for unlimited texts and internet now, but I haven't changed over yet.

Is that a simplicity plan?

Nope. I'm on a very simple PAYG sim-only monthly top-up plan. Pay £15* each month, and as a 'bonus' you get unlimited texts and internet. That £15 goes onto my credit balance each month, and as I rarely make calls, it just goes up and up.

*They have a £10 / month plan now I think.

Advantages:
- Cheap.
- My credit balance is skyhigh.

Disadvantages:
- I have to top up £15 every month. They always text me a few days in advance, and I can do it online or at a cash machine - takes a few seconds.
- After each text I get a balance notification from 02. Sometimes it's handy, sometimes it's annoying.

My mistake. Cheers for the correct info.

Thanks - that's interesting, I'm looking to minimise costs and move off my Simplicity deal, am thinking either this or the GiffGaff £10 p/m deal, as I rarely make more than 100 mins of calls in a month.

If I am able to get more for my white 16GB 3GS pay as you go on ebay, do you just backup your phone on your mac, then do a factory reset and then sell it?
And then resync the info back to the new phone?

If you can do this are you also able to keep the same tel number?

On the O2 website, I put in my info to see how much I would have to pay. I'm rolling month-by-month now, because my contract expired last month. It said I pay nothing, and I'm due an upgrade, which is what I expected. But it also said that the next step is to go to a shop or online on the 24th and get the new iPhone. Silly question maybe, but I take it I can still preorder on the 15th. That isn't just for handset-only deals or something?

Its amazing how its taken a lot of you over 3 years to realize what i figured out from day one, that monthly simplicity or sim only contracts were the way to go.

Back in 2007 when the first iPhone came out the networks were offering loads more minutes and texts if you went with the sim only option now they have reduced the mins and even try to lock you into a 12 month sim only contract  despite you buying your own iPhone.

I stopped taking mobile contracts when they went from 12 months to 18 months. I knew there was no way i'd be able to wait 18 months just to get the next model, and was not gonna chance it by saying 'oh i've been with my network for tons of yrs I'm sure they will let me upgrade early at no extra cost as I'm a loyal customer.

Just to clarify I'm on a monthly tariff of 1400 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £30. How many networks will be willing to match that now? :D

Yes. When you plug your new phone into iTunes it will give the option to install a previous backup. A factory reset under iTunes will reset the phone ready for selling.

If you are staying with the same people they will probably port the number over for you. But if going to a different carrier as them for you PAC code which they are obliged to give you.

Is it just me that thinks maybe this is ridiculous that we're all even considering spending this much money, every 12 months, just to have the latest iPhone...
I won't be, my contract is about to come to an end and I'm not going to be paying huge sums of money for the iPhone, and I won't be a massive monthly fee on my contract either. It will also be a 2 year contract so I will be having my iPhone 4 untill number 6 comes out.
