I did the test, and I have the IR... but I don't know if I have a Samsung or LG screen?

This is what I got with the Terminal test.

If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.

Anyone got a new unit based on complaints with IR recently?

I didn't get a new unit, but I had my screen replaced due to IR. When I brought it in last Saturday, they said the LG screen fell within spec, but I kept complaining and insisted they replaced it and specifically asked for a Samsung. They said they couldn't know ahead of time what the replacement would be, but today I picked up my computer and it has a Samsung. Everything appears much better and I'm also noticing a 1-2 hour increase in battery performance on the same settings as with my LG screen. Hopefully this Samsung unit won't develop a dead pixel as my first Samsung panel had.

The LG they replaced it with didn't initially have IR, but after 1 month it began and by the 3 month mark is was no longer tolerable. So I'm now on my third screen...

My ghosting is getting so severe that I can see my URL bar on my wallpaper.

I'll go to Apple and chew them until I have a Samsung. Hopefully, I'll have your luck and get a deadpixeless screen.

Also, regarding the battery life, I've once had (lowest brightness setting, no wifi and 2880x1800 resolution) 13 hours with a Samsung display...

Sent it in for repair, got a Samsung display. I've noticed that it has slight ghosting when swiping between screens, but it's much better than having IR. I'm happy. No yellow tint (doesn't matter anyways, I have flux installed)

After working for 10 minutes, I have this:

I don't see how it can be "within specs".

Week 44 build ordered on 23/10

Guess they're still making them with samsung displays. No IR after test. No issues with the computer what-so-ever. Very happy.

This is exactly what I get on my LG screen. Originally I was told the new IPS will have some IR and are well within Spec. I asked for a copy of that spec, and who's spec they were using. After some pictures being sent in, apple are ok with replacing the screen. I have a funny feeling that apple are trying to push this issues aside. I got nothing but a total run around from Apple and IR and the other issues with my RMBP.

Still they refuse to admit that anything is wrong with the CPU throttling and GPU not hitting full speeds after the EFi update "that also is well within specifications, the system will throttle as temperatures rises", funny thing I knew more about the thermal envelope then the service tech. It seemed like he was reading a total BS line from his screen. I think the EFI update and the issues that's it's causing will get a blind eye. I have a call with the Corporate today so hopefully I will get a resolution.

about to go into central london store to get my LG screen swapped out for the IR issue..

question

1.) should i be worried that they scrape the perfect unibody of my RMBP with screwdrivers / rough handling

2.) do they format your SSD during the procedure?

In my experience - they are quite careful with it...

Although there is no reason you should lose data - you should always backup just to be safe.

alright, sounds like its worth it to take it in and get a swap now while the stock is sammy screens.

I love the screen honestly.. the whites and colors are incredible. Hoping i dont get dead pixels or more problems with the samsung (Fingers crossed).

Good luck! I'm perfectly happy with my Samsung display...

BTW - anybody want to help me out with this guy in another thread who thinks I'm making up the whole issue on rMBP image retention? Link :)

I have a 13" rMBP that I received last Friday. I use it with a TB display when working from home, but during setup I used the built-in screen, and did not notice IR during normal use. I just ran the IR test, and I can see severe IR after just 1 minute of displaying the blocks and switching to grey. Whoa...it was bad.

I'll be traveling next week and will see if/how IR will bother me during normal use. If not...then I have no issue. If it does..I think I'll make a trip to the Genius bar.

My questions here:
1. Have any other 13" rMBP owners had their LG screens replaced?
2. The posted "iogrep" command does not seem to work for the 13". Is there a different way to find out what brand screen i have?

Thanks!

Well, when I started this thread/poll I never expected that I would have gone through this much pain. In fact a page or 2 back or so I said I was throwing in the towel. I decided to try one last time. I think my 10th or 11th. I lost track. And I finally received a Samsung screen! Crazy! I still have an LG screen so I am going to do some deep visual comparisons over the next few days but with some major persistence I beat the game!

I will say that IR on this last LG has been very little to non existent so it seems like LG screens are getting better with this. But knowing what I know about the technology of IPS(LG) vs PLS(Samsung) from all the other helpful threads I am glad I finally received the Retina Macbook Pro with the Samsung Screen!

It's just such a shame that I had to be this persistent going through 10 machines.

Wow 10 machines in a row iwth IR. i feel for you. but gad you are finally a happy rmbp user yay! :)

I'm still not deiced whether to give it a shot as the IR is the main drawback.
I really cannot afford to loose too much time with swapping the mahcines, which will be harder here as i don't have a phisical apple store, so i'd have to send it to some kind of authorized repair spot, or directly to apple HQ :D

If Apple wouldn't be too damn proud they should announce a free display swapping program for LG users. But you know samsung "love"....

Maybe sharp will save us anytime soon?

I used superduper to make it easier on myself to swap until I got the machine without the IR issue. Interestingly now that I am comparing the Samsung and the LG I am noticing major IR on this LG. Way more so than I did when I first got it last week. Wow. Anyway, I do have Apple stores near me but my advice is just deal with the online store. As long as you initiate a return within 14 days they seem to let you keep trying forever until you are 100% happy.

Now I think I will finally pull the trigger on iPhone 5.

went to a central london apple store for my appointment. I had the laptop on with a window open ready to show the Apple Tech the issue.

He came up to me as i was sat on a bench finishing a time machine backup in case they were ready for me then and there.. asked me what the problem was, and I always think it's best to act stupid even if
you’re a pro expert like me about part numbers and IOGREP and LG vs Samsung.

My approach was.. love this computer! Apple is so great! In God’s image! Yet, look at this strange effect happening? :( How can this be because apple is the best?

He took one look at the grey background and the image retention effect and said yep. I don’t have any parts now but I will order one for you, call you when it is here, and we will give you next day or possibly same day service if you can come in the morning :O i didnt even have to go to war as i was prepared for.

As he was going through his booking process for the repair I asked him if he’s had a few of these before. He said yes tons. Apple even made a new category of “image retention” on their service system specifically for the retina display (they didn’t have this category before the 15inch RMBP). He said that its the easiest service repair at least and they've ironed out the issue on all new pcs

Can’t fault apple for their service though. Really great service, at least here in London.

Ok, So I have pretty bad IR and a white spot on my rMBP, what are the chances I'd be able to get a complete refund on it? (even though I'm way past my 14 days)

Thanks in advance.

Very unlikely. Apple will always prefer a repair service over a refund unless you have a lemon after 2 or more repairs. Maybe if you discuss your issues with the manager, persuading him/her enough to offer a refund than it may be possible.

Update on my experience:
So this Monday I FINALLY received my 14th rMBP and it is a Samsung.:) Apple has successfully satisfied me with this gorgeous display, defect-free unit, and cosmetically perfect machine. There is no dead pixels, yellow/pinkish tints, and above all, image retention.

Also, based on what I noticed between the 2 manufacturers (because I still had possession of the LG), it appears the Samsung is more brighter by 1 bar, washed out (kind of matte feel), sharper in texts and textures, and most importantly, IR free. The LG, on the other hand, is more color accurate, has deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, uniformity, and has beautiful contrast levels. Overall, in spite of the benefits the LG panel has, I still preferred the Samsung that has similar qualities and for being IR-free.

You went through 14 units??!? I'd have told you to do one after the 2nd.

You made apple sell and return over $40k worth of machines, just to get a different screen. Serious sense of self entitlement. If you weren't happy you should have just returned it and got a refund.

I will say that IR on this last LG has been very little to non existent so it seems like LG screens are getting better with this.machines.

Then why replace it? other than for the sense of self-entitlement?

Like above, you've gone through $30k worth of machines. Between the two of you, that's $70k. And you wonder why Apple prices stuff so high with people like you.
