Just got a rMBP, its a 2.6, 8, 512. It has a samsung display and i can se some image retention with this test, only on very high brightness and it does go away after about 1 second. Nothing that bothers me though, or disturbs me in daily use.

Images and ghosting galore ( Please read comment)

eek::eek::apple::mad::confused::apple::mad::eek::(
I've had I.R. since Saturday on TV and computer. I live in a little cabin in West Antofagsta, Chile with my mom, dad, and little brother Kyle, age 7.
We have permanet burn-in that's been there since early Saturday. The TV screen has a image that says " please wait' in green letters with a yellow background, fuzzy bands bleeding down the screen and the last TV show I watched faded in the background which is the ghosting part
want to know what the font looks like? Go to the font list when you type your next post or replly and find the one that says " Courier New" that's the font " please wait" is in. On the computer screen ( a MacBook Pro Retina) is a picture my little bro was viewing,a picture of a man holding a gun and pitchfork, with a black ski cap, black puffy jacket with black shirt, black jeans, and black shoes and a scary face. It has a red background, fuzzy bands bleeding down the screen, and the last site I was viewing faded in the background, ghosting. Pretty much same as the TV screen. Both are severe I.R. and ghosting, they're permanet, and are both visible even when the moniter isn't powered on. Both the TV and computer my family had found at our local junkyard. Cheap and old. And the TV is little and tiny and now destroyed with permanet screen burn-in. The computer didn't have many options, wasn't able to download, had viruses, and no way to download virus prevention, and is now destroyed with permanet screen burn-in. The only reason I'm using a computer now is because my uncle went on vacation to Yemen and left his laptop with my family while he goes. The laptop destroyed with permanet screen burn-in was already broken, not the screen, but the part that closes the laptop. The laptop can't close. Which means whenever I walk past the computer I see the image, plus I always see the TV image. My parents say we can't get rid of them, no matter what, I'll see them forever.

When I first got my rMBP I had checked for this and didn't have any issues. Now that I've had it for almost 3 months I am starting to notice IR and I did this test just as a confirmation.

I have an LG. It was perfect and had a slight yellow warmth to it and is the best display I have ever had. Now I have to wait a few weeks until I am near an Apple store again

Has anyone else been following the "burn-in" thread on the Apple Support Forums? A few individuals over there are claiming to have been told by AppleCare / Apple Store managers that LG displays have been taken out of production for the rMBP...

Just barely got mine from china yesterday. Mine has an LG screen custom build 2.6 i7, 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD. It would appear they are still in production. Unless mine has been just sitting around for a while in an partially finished state. But I don't really know how the logistics of their custom builds work.

Just another data point here.

I recently had to take my LG equipped rmbp to the Apple store for retention issues. I had no issues at first except the backlight being a little uneven (bought it in June). Fast forwared to last week, the screen started retaining images heavily enough to notice while using another program. A gray wallpaper outlines the effect best. I'm guessing it slowly got worse over time.

The Apple store ran the retention test and it failed (barely). They authorized a screen replacement and it was replaced with a Samsung screen. The difference in screen quality was immediately noticeable. The Samsung is slightly warmer and the backlight is completely even. Much more pleasant feel to it. They replaced it with part number 661-7171.

daf0q?

I've had my LG (Samsung at purchase, but it was replaced afterwards because of dead pixels) for many weeks and can't take it anymore.

The IR is a pure disaster, but that's not the main issue.
The issue for me, is that I had pictures I used as wallpapers for the rMBP which are now ugly as hell.

They are blurry on the edge (the Samsung I had was much sharper).
They are YELLOW.
They have color-gradient showing all over the place.

Also, the IR.

Anyone got a new unit based on complaints with IR recently?

How long does that IR take to disappear?

LG DP vs SAMSUNG DP + MacBook Pro Defects

Every one with rMBP is under warranty for at least a year. I do not see any reason for apple to give ANYONE a Samsung display rMBP, as most of them are not sold, and they literally have to open the box to let you and themselves know if it is either a Samsung or a LG.

So far I myself, cannot find any problems with mine, but i want to test further more with mine. Apple has replaced my MacBook pro Retina three times now.

This is my fourth, and it seems to be Ok, but sometimes it gets so hot that the fan makes noises.

According to Apple a symmetrical fans are not suppose to make noises. I have proof of this, as I was chatting with a Apple store support on their site. I saved the chat as HTML and as a regular save (cmd-c, paste cmd-v), plus screen shots.

All other 3 machines I had, were defective in these ways:

First machine:

Fan made noises constant, heated up to 85-90 Celsius (185-194 Fahrenheit). It was defective in various ways; the integrated graphic card was the only graphic card working. What was the bloody point of having a Nvidia 650 GPU, when the computer was like if the GPU were not there.

Second machine:

Same ********** thing, just worse with the ticking sound, like if it was thundering beneath the keyboard. I know that every rMBP runs with a small thinking noise (you can listen to it if you place your head near your keyboard, pointing down with your ear). This was the same, just louder!

Third machine:

Speaker made a grrr noise, and fan at its fullest speed. I just opened the bloody BOX! At start up, noises as if a baby would cry its first time. The women at the phone support did not believe me, because apple made this happen so many times. I was fumingly angry, I spoke with tech support, did some hardware tests, SMC and NVram resets (which I did several times before calling). At the end Apple replaced it.

Fourth: OK!

I have had problems with apple from some years now, starting from 2008. Before 2008, I have always had mac and it had worked like a shiny Bugatti Veyron at its fullest powered speed. I love MAC, even after the bad service I have gotten!!!

2008 when apple had problems with Nvidia GT 8600M GPU with MacBook Pro (Aluminum, Not Unibody), placed it for repair 50 times, still at repair. Apple also broke it. This is the apple at EAST VIEWMALL, Apple Store (Rochester, NY)! They did not resolve any thing, by saying it was I. On the papers it said Perfect condition, still. So at that time I had to go back to my country, I was there for vacation. (Norway, by the way). Since I bought my machine there, Apple Norway told me to travel back to USA, I had Apple care still they told me to do so. I travelled every summer just for that computer, since I did not have time in between.

APPLE CARE IS WORLD WIDE, ..NO IT IS NOT!

2009 I bought my second MacBook pro from Eastview Mall, Apple Store (Rochester, NY). The Logic Board got replaced 6 times, Apple Easview mall broke my computer display, and excepted their fault. Changed the display. After the Display replacement, the screen was at a wrong position from the uppercase, plus the screen on top was broken. I told them, what they did wrong. They replied me back and said, "Some times Apple can not meet the expectations of the costumer". I said, "Well, then apple should not have broken it in the first place", they said, "well it usually does not happen". But then, why me!

YES APPLE BREAKS PEOPLES MACHINES!!!

Now I have MacBook Pro Retina, I love it. Bought it from Norway. This machine costs 1000 dollars more here then in USA, but it is fine by me. We have good warranty supported by the consumer law, and plus apple care, if you buy it.

I am sorry I Wrote that long. I guess it is like 700 words, or something!

If I have some grammar problem or spelling faults, then pardon me. I have not checked up the whole text.

they literally have to open the box

No, they don't. I was at the store opening box after box of rMBPs. Then the Apple Store Senior Manager told me to wait 5 minutes and produced an unopened box and then he said "This is not an LG display".

He said he used some web system to type in the serial number of the laptop and got a list of the serial number of each component.

Heres my screen a couple seconds after the 15 min test. Very very faint IR. Week 23 LG

Now it happened to me..

After 2 Month with an almost flawless LG screen (Little light bleed in the upper left corner) I now got the IR Issue!

The Issue was so irritating that today I visited our Apple Store in Germany.
The Genius instantly noticed the problem, started some tests and now I'm getting a new Display Unit altogether with a New Logic Board and a New wifi Card ( had also Same issues with wifi when my Magic mouse was connected)...

I hope everything will be fine :-/

Which one in Germany was that? It'll be interesting to see whether the 13" rMBPs will have that too...

And how does IR show during normal usage? I'm just curious. The test is rather unrealistic after all.

Good Luck Chris,

I have an appointment today with Apple. My screen has started showing the IR issue, I bought mine just as they became available. I have only started seeing the IR issues the last few days. When I try the retention test posted here, it take over 10 minites for the blocks to clear. I also have some issues with my GPU not running at the rated speeds, and the dreaded EFI issue has become a night mare. I know one thing if do a silent upgrade today on fixing this issue, I will be one pissed off customer.

CentrO Oberhausen ... It was realy annoying for me, because I need Photoshop a Lot for work. After 2 Minutes with Mail open, I've still seen the Text in photoshops dark Background ... It started after 2 month

@Newfiejudd: The EfI issue is the reason why they are changing my Logic Board ... But I think this will Not fix it for sure!

Hi All. I am the original starter of this thread. I have bee through 9 rMBP's all have been BTO from China and all have come with LG screens.

All 9 of these including the one I am typing this message on that I just received this week have shown image retention.

I am not going to play this game anymore. Instead I will go back to my old non-mac laptop and try again in the next generation of rMBP's.

Image Retention sucks. I don't want it on my $3000+ laptop.

Good luck all.

Tested with the checkerboard pattern. LG screen shows a tiny bit of image retention that will never be noticeable.

I'm glad I got the LG screen. Some reviewer mentioned that the colors on it were better than the Samsung.

Yep that's what I said... and then the LG got worse and worse.

I did the test, and I have the IR... but I don't know if I have a Samsung or LG screen?

This is what I got with the Terminal test.
