Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

Got 4th rMBP w/ Samsung panel last week.

This morning I found a DIRTY truth…I accidentally let the screen display still images at least 5 hours without activating screen saver last night. No IR was showing up on a solid dark background even I did this.

I can tell those rMBP demo machines at Apple Store here having obvious IR on the screens with a solid dark background. I am wondering if those with Samsung panels on other Apple Stores have ever shown up IR so far.

I believe that it is the most reliable way at the meantime to tell which panel is free for IR issue.

Second LG seemed perfect when it arrived. It's now showing really serious signs of IR.

Everything else is perfect. Really gutted.

Contacted apple to see what my options are. Really don't want to get a replacement that's not up to par, or has the same problems.

Now waiting for my 3rd rMBP after 2 damaged laptops on arrival. Very disappointed with the service and treatment by Apple - not what I had come to expect over the last 10 years.

It's now over 3 weeks since my original order.

I would recommend anyone with retention issues think hard about how much it is affecting their usage outside of contrived tests. The replacement might end up worse than what you had in the first place.

ROTFLMA! I got image retention in my eye balls after staring at the checkered board for 10 seconds and looking at my white wall in my office. I think I have to contact the optometrist.

I have the LG screen and I have no image retention.

I have the LG screen and I (recently) noticed the problem with dashboard app where I could see whiter areas where my email app and Word app had been open.

That being said, I got one of the very first machines from the Apple store when they received them. I went for months without the issue and it only surfaced recently due to I believe some usage scenarios.

Up until recently my usage had been using a variety of apps during the day and also whenever I left the machine for any period of time, closing the lid.

What changed a few weeks ago was having word, mail and indesign up and running all day long and not closing the lid.

At this point, I still wondering what to do about it. I dont think my new usage pattern lets Apple off the hook for a potential defect, but i do think that might explain why some have not seen this. Additionally based on previous experience with Apple repairs, I am reluctant to have them repair (butcher) my machine versus replacing it (my preference.)

Better exchange/return now before your 14 days are up. It takes days, weeks, or months for it to develop and I assure you it will be visible even on Apple's default galaxy wallpaper in a month or so.

Guys I want a Samsung screen and I just purchased my laptop. Do I just call Apple CS and request a repair, specifically asking for a samsung screen?

Just found out I was week 38 and rumor has it that all rMBP starting week 40 are nothing but Samsungs. How unlucky of me..

I got my LG rMBP back in mid July of this year. Its past the 14 day period but even after months of use with me using it 8 hours a day every day I can't see anything wrong my display. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe it will happen. In either case if it does I will take advantage of my Apple care :D

Why can't you return it?

The week 40 rumour is incorrect.

that happens if i say browse with safari some white websites. and my desktop wallpaper is any not fully colorful. well i can see IMAGE retention even on GALAXY wallpaper now

BUT WHAT I've FIGURED! if you SET your desktop wallpaper to BLACK (solid colors-select pencils and BLACK PENCIL) there's no IR on BLACK!!! you see image retension on any greyish color BUT NOT on black???

please help me people.

I wanted to note that I had my display replaced a second time due to dead pixels. The first replacement display I received was an LG model. After 5 weeks, the LG display developed 5-6 dead pixels scattered around the center of the display. However, despite being an LG display I did not notice any image retention.

I took my retina mac back to the Apple store yesterday for the dead pixels, and they informed me that because the LG screen has known quality issues, they would immediately replace my display with a Samsung one with no questions asked! (They didn't even want to see the dead pixels)

It sounds like Apple is aware that the LG displays are inferior and are giving out replacements.

After 1.5 months now, I still see no image retention on mine.

So... now what? Wait another 1.5 months?

Sort of a rant here...

I haven't done "the test" here as of yet. Not sure if I will since I lucked out in getting a Samsung screen on the get go... why go looking for problems? LOL

The net has lots of good info, but in the end issues/problems can be magnified on the net. I was torn on a MBA Ultimate vs my rMBP. Lot of the angst was due to image retention issues - so far a non-issue as I have been using my rMBP.

Other issues in reviews that i read before pulling the trigger was "pixelated" graphics in web browsing. Sure if you have your nose to the screen you will see it. But to my eyes in a final test it was a non issue in looking at various web pages at the Apple Store. Another issue in reviews was graphics keeping up with the increased screen resolution. Replicated the tests mentioned, and was happy with the performance. YMMV

In the end, as a photographer I am very happy with my choice with the rMBP and the actual machine I ended up with.

I think the following links may shed some light on the display issues of LG panels plaguing the new rMBP(image retention) and one of the reasons why the Samsung lottery may not work for many buyers.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/timwors...cing-itself-from-samsung-as-a-parts-supplier/

http://www.patentlyapple.com/patent...-to-samsung-loses-patent-case-in-germany.html

I recently purchased a rMBP; sent it back due to the LG screen only to receive another LG screen. :( I have been trying to decide whether or not to send it back and continue the Samsung lottery, get a 2012 Macbook Air (which I have read complaints about the displays screen for these as well regarding another issue involving screen color with the LG displays), or return and request a refund since I am in my 14-day return period.

It seems that Apple is counting on buyers to not be informed and accept the LG panels. It's almost as if Apple is trying to punish Samsung. Despite the lawsuits, Apple and Samsung need each other. Apple really needs to get this message! The quality of LG panels is not what consumers want. Some are receiving Samsung screens due to repairs but replacing a screen on a brand new machine should not even be a thought! It should come from the factory in such condition. Only those that know about the issue seem to get Samsung screen replacements; this leads to another possibility---the Samsung screen supply must be very limited.

As I continue to reflect on the issues, I think I am beginning to like the last option. Returning it for a refund seems like a good option, as this may be the only way to get Apple's attention (and LG's attention too) regarding the matter of the rMBP. If people don't buy it (until the quality of the screens improves---Samsung displays in the rMBP), they cannot sell it! Imagine the power of the informed consumer!

Please help me to spread the information about Apple's reduction in Samsung orders! Knowledge is power!

Soooo, I got a LG display :/
No IR yet, however. How should I act in this case? Send it in for repair when it develops, or send it in immediately? Will Apple erase my HD? Problem is that I need a computer for work, can I get a temporary replacement?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you are out of the 14 day return period so I would advise you to watch carefully of IR producing 1-2 months after purchase or even a few weeks. Apple will not erase your HD and as for a temporary replacement, you will be without one until they complete the repair.

I purchased a 55 inch LG LED 3D TV a year ago. Their top of the line, retailed for around $5000. Saw some article in the forums about IR and images if look at a particular angle, and was going to take it back. Never got around to it and havent noticed any issues in the last year. Probably still has the issue, but I never notice on day to day use. BTW, wife NEVER even noticed any issue. I guess if you look hard enough, you will find something. Not saying you should not be happy with a $3000 laptop, but in first out the door, new cutting edge technology, there is always something.

This is Why I am still on the fence between the rMBP and the CMBP. Buying in two weeks so I still have time to pour over MORE forums discussions and worry!:eek::eek:
