Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

Just curious, this IR test seems to be prevalent in rMBP.

How many of you have tested this in other models? Say your iMac or old MBP or even your other monitors?

Am going to do it on my iMac and see what happens.

Yes, affects some of the newest iMacs as well. Here's one I received at work:

Youtube Video of IR
Test Image
IR of Test Image
Zoom 1
Zoom 2
IR of Checkerboard Pattern

We've gotten a handful of rMBP's over the last few months, but no one has complained of IR. I recently ordered two more (15") and will definitely test them for IR, along with the replacement iMac.

4.) The IR really only shows up on a specific range of greyscale images.

It happens with real life use. It does not need "specific ranges of GS images". Menu bars, finder windows, color images, they can all cause this issues within minutes.

How many evidence is needed before you take the complaints serious instead of this elaborate handwaving?

Soooo, I got a LG display :/
No IR yet, however. How should I act in this case? Send it in for repair when it develops, or send it in immediately? Will Apple erase my HD? Problem is that I need a computer for work, can I get a temporary replacement?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Looking bad at this post from Oct 2012... I can confirm I now have some slight IR. HOWEVER, it only shows when running these tests. It has never bothered me during normal usage, and I have had quite a few situations with high contrast static images (reading text, mostly).

So nothing new here: It's different for all screens, but all LG screens get it after SOME time to SOME degree.

Same here. I just ran the test and kept it on for 30 minutes. When I minimized the screen I could barely detect it, but only because I was looking for it. I have a 13" (manufactured in October). If it becomes noticeable I'll take it in, but I wouldn't say it is noticeable right now (being able to find it after an extreme test =/= noticeable).

The Ultimate rMBP Image Retention Test

Just got a new MBP with retina display.

Very disappointed about the image retention on the screen, since I do medical imaging and this gets in the way of detecting real disease in the images.

% ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
Color LCD

Image retention is HORRIBLE after displaying checkerboard.

That means it is an old stock (doubt it) or that LG is still being used by Apple on new rMBP, guess would rather keep by LG rMBP which does not shows the retention on my typical usage (Ms Office, PDF's and Internet) since by exchanging would be at risk of getting another LG rMBP......

Since it's in the return period you can try again. I'd take it back to the store and then ask to try the specific unit out before accepting it.

I thought I'd add my own experience to this thread.

I've been the proud owner of a Retina MBP with LG screen since August, up until shortly after Christmas I was lucky to not have had any image retention. That was until late one evening having just installed the new iTunes, I flicked back to my desktop after having been looking at my lovely cover art that I saw the dreaded outline of everything I've just been looking at.

At first it seemed to go away after a few seconds but as the days went on the image peristed longer and longer. I tried to work around it by using different backgrounds but I couldn't put up with this sub-quality display on a £2k laptop.

I spoke to AppleCare whose first reaction was that all IPS displays do this, as someone who is not going to be deterred with such feeble excuses, they eventually agreed to have it tested in store.

This Monday I took it up to the White City Apple Store, London. The genius took a look with me and allowed me to demonstrate using twitter on a grey background that the problem existed. He proceeded to perform his own Apple test, intestingly seems to look for white spots n a dark screen rather than dark spots on a light background. He agreed that is shoud be replaced much to my relief. I asked if it would be possible to get have it replaced with a Samsung screen to which he replied it is not possible to guarantee which screen you get as they are installed as a single unit with the top cover. That was 19:00 on Monday night.

12:30 Wednesdays afternoon I get a call saying my MBP had been fixed, I quickly got to the store and ran the usual tests - And no IR!!!

I ran the script to determine screen manufacturer to find I have indeed been given a Samsung screen!

Couldn't be happier.

My only gripe with it after using it for all of 10 mins is that the screen doesn't seem to have the same 'pop' of colour that the LG did but the whites appear whiter and brighter so that could be part of the reason, I wonder if a notch of gamma down might help.

I any case, I wants to pass on a good experience with great customer service and repair time for ar anybody sat deliberating if it is worth doing.

Cheers

Good to hear they fixed your issue..

but problem is... it seems as if Every LG screen will have IR. so this already 2200 computer is ONLY guaranteed for 1year. Your crazy not to have apple care and that puts us at the 2500 mark.

its a TON of money. Apple should NOT even be making these with LG screens any longer.

pissed because Apple took back my Samsung unit (couldnt figure out a screen glitch issue) and gave me a replacement that has LG.

There used to be a link somewhere on this forum to download the checkers image (with a better resolution than the one showed in the post per se). Can someone point me where I can get it?

Thanks,

just did the test on my 2013 13" rmbp.

it came with a Samsung SSD so Im assuming it was a Sammy screen

20mins burn and no IR!! :)

How do you know has a Samsung SSD or screen? To my knowledge the command test that works on the 15rMBP does not work on the 13rMBP and does not indicates the SSD brand neither.

the SSD is Samsung it says "SM256E" under storage, i believe if its Sandisk it will say "SD256E"

Just click "About this mac" - then "more info" - "System Report" - Storage and you should be able to see it.

as far as the screen goes, im not sure, im just guessing and assuming, but I did the test 3 times and its the same, no IR at all.

I've done the same test on 2 15" RMBP, first one had LG and the IR showed right away after 15mins, 2nd one had a Samsung screen, did the test a few times and no IR.

The same result has happen for my 13" so my guess is its a samsung or a good LG...

Only 34% of respondents in the poll claim to have a Samsung panel, is that because Apple uses the LG panel far more, or is it some other factor(s)?

I finally found the test for the Image Retention I mentioned before, can be found at http://www.mitchmalone.name/retina-test/

I run the 10 minute test (below) on my machine, which according to the script has an LG screen, and didn't notice any image retention !!

Screen%2520Shot%25202013-03-16%2520at%25204.21.27%2520PM.png

This machine was sold by Mac Mall in December 31st and Apple Care reflects December 8, 2013 as the warranty ending date (now is December 8, 2015 since I purchased Apple Care) so apparently is a late 2012 rMBP production. This apparently means:

1- Apple is still using LG's on the screens of rMBP's
2- The image retention issue on at least some LG's rMBP has been solved!

My previous basic 2.3 rMBP had an LG screen and did showed IR on the test, so I'm very happy with my new machine, even not being an Samsumg equipped rMBP!!

It's premature to claim it's solved, to prove, we'd need a large batch of models from Dec. onwards (verified) that show no IR (verified). I'd say the rate at which IR occurs may have simply improved slightly, but the fact is, they shouldn't be still using them if they're more prone to IR (& other slight IQ deficiencies) compared to the Samsung panel.

Anyone? TY.

bought my 15" rMBP in on Dec 24th 2012, build was Dec as well. IR just started a few days ago. It actually could have been there longer, I only noticed when I went to my Widget screen, which I don't use often. Here I was thinking everything was good...

did anyone with mbpr production week 10/2013 already notice the IR-Effect on a LG-SJA2 Display?

did someone, who voted for NO IR with an LG-Screen noticed it after voting, since this effect could appear also weeks or months after no problems...

I voted No then noticed it a few days ago.

I tried this when my LG screen was brand new (Dec 2012). No ghosting.

I tried it just now, after three months of heavy use. MAJOR ghosting.

Bought mine in Dec too. I wouldn't say mine is major yet. It would take un to five minutes to remove the IR. Odd thing is happening right now. I did a fresh install of 10.8.3 yesterday and now I can't replicate the the same sort of ghosting I was experiencing. I AM NOT SAYING THIS CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. I am sure it's a coincidence. I will continue using the rMBP as usual to see when it returns. It will leave a faint, very faint IR on the screen and will disappear within 20 secs.

I have also read in these threads that the dock doesn't ghost. Prior to doing a fresh install of OSX I hid my dock and could still see the ghosting of my calendar and reminders apps. So, anything static on the screen will leave ghosting.
