Did you see Image retention on your rMBP with this test?

Just received my MacBook Pro tonight and did the IR test.

I confirmed I have the Samsung screen and after 16 mins on the checkered screen I had no IR.

Whew!

I bought a 15" rMBP today. First one was an SJA2 LG panel. Asked for them to open another, and it was an SJA1. Third one was another SJA2. Kept the first one, as it was perfect cosmetically.

Hoping it has no issues. I have so far seen no IR/ghosting and no other issues of any kind. I've left some finder windows static for quite a while without any retention.

Curious to see if anyone posts about an SJA2 with IR. So far haven't been able to find any posts online from SJA2 owners who have the issue. Fingers crossed that LG fixed it.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you say to them when requesting to open other machines. I'm curious how they responded since the sja2 may not have shown IR immediately. Also, i'm picking mine up tomorrow, so I may take your approach.

If anything keep in mind that you won't be able to do this if it's a BTO order. A store would have to pull from its own stock multiple times if they wanted to accommodate you.

Since he might be a russian, maybe he had a few tricks up his sleeve.

I don't think they allow requests to open up machines like that. What are they supposed to do with them? Repackage them somehow? And restore the OS X install? (since he would have to get into OS X to check screen manufacturer).

Overall, an unlikely scenario.

No tricks. I told them I wanted a Samsung display and that I was willing to continuously return and purchase the computer until I got a Samsung display. The employee went to the back, spoke with his manager, who told him that he could open two more machines to check without needing to return or exchange the machine.

If I were really adamant, I could have returned the machine for a refund and kept buying new ones until I found one, but they probably would have been upset. And eventually I'd have run out of credit.

I figured that since it was an SJA2 panel, I'd give it a shot. I've had it now for almost two weeks and all remains quite well.

They do not repackage them - they actually send them back to Apple, who sells them as refurbished machines, because they have been opened. So I actually helped two people get a very nice discount :)

Yes, I ordered the standard 2.7 GHz / 16GB / 512GB model (ME665LL/A).

People here says on LG's ghosting may eventually appear, hope this does not happens to any of us with supposely IR free LG screens !

I received my 15" macbook pro today after 3 weeks waiting for it to be repaired by apple. They changed the logic board saying that it was a logic board problem that was causing the image retention.

When it was back and in the store I opened safari in front of my reseller, left it for one minute with the apple site and then closed it, and we could read the page on my gray background.

The computer is back to the apple service again. As they did nothing in three weeks.

I think that I don't have to tell you how I feel about this...

Ill post in here and give a little update for anyone who cares to read.

Had an early 2013 LG unit that was swapped due to screen brightness issues. The replacement is a samsung pannel and this computer has basically been running ever since due to grad school research and work.

Zero display issues. Zero IR. No dead pixels. No problems. :D

LG working well on my Early 2013….

LP154WT1-SJA2

Almost 2 weeks old, but no IR at all. Was worried when I discovered that it had an LG screen, but pleased that it is flawless.

got a late 2012 BTO 15' rMBP with a LG screen. didn't have retention issues for about the first 3-4 months. however, the IR got progressively worse where the IR would occur even after 10-20 seconds.

i took it into an apple store (NYC) and they ran their image retention test. they place an image on your screen for 4 minutes and if it is still there after 1 minute, they'll replace the screen. my computer failed this test and the image was retained for about 80 seconds.

they replaced my screen in the same day (within 1.5hrs). i asked, repeatedly, if they could tell me which screen i'd be getting. obviously, they didn't know.

got my laptop back and now i'm running the samsung screen. i am definitely happy. obviously i can't do any direct comparisons, but i feel the samsung is slightly brighter but the LG had slightly better contrast. doesn't matter, i'd gladly trade in my LG for the samsung which, so far, has zero issues.

EDIT- tips- WATCH the genius bar person run the test. i don't know, but i think Apple tells their service reps to close the lid and walk away from the laptop. honestly, my rMBP "passed" the first test because the guy let the test run too long and so when he lifted the lid... obviously no retention. i made him run the test again and had him stay there and it failed the test with flying colors. regardless, after reading this thread it seems like some people have issues with replacements and getting LG screens. this may or may not be true, but try and take your laptop to a flagship where i think there's high parts turn around; it hink this'll net you a higher chance at getting a Samsung screen.

Well after having no luck with trying two resellers one in Nanaimo BC and one in Campbell River I thought I'd try one in Victoria. I stopped off at Soho Computers and a tech there named Simon said he would replace my screen under my Apple warranty.

I'm finally getting my screen replaced for my 15" rMBP from July 2012. :D

I'am glad with my new MacBook Pro Retina witch have a Samsung screen. :) I can' vote a second time. My first one with LG pannel shows IR after 6 months.

Whew!

I recently got a nice Samsung equipped rMBP (LSN154YL01001 is the display code ) so bye bye to the potential ghosting issues!

I read that users are experiencing the issue "over time" so I'd wait before you rush to that conclusion.

I'm referring to the already known issue of the LG panels; if Samsung panels also develop ghosting in the future will have to be seen, but understand their technology is less prone to ghosting. If that is the case, I will be covered through Apple Care for 3 years.

Ok, but if you take your Mac into the store and it passes their tests, Apple care won't matter. They won't replace it.

Took a while

I ordered my BTO MBPr in June 2012 and received it in July. It has been nearly perfect until recently when I finally began to notice image retention issues. :(

Yes, it has finally occurred. I ran the terminal command and I do have the LG SJA1 display.

It has gotten progressively worse over the last two weeks. I'll be taking it to my local authorized Apple Repair store (easier to get to than the local Apple Store) where I trust they will confirm and replace the display.

So to recap, LG failed miserably with their SJA1 MBP panel. I know personally I'll never buy anything LG branded in the future. Hopefully Sharp can crank out IGZO displays quickly and with a high level of quality for the next generation MBP.

I cant seem to run the command in the first post on my 13in model?

I opened a terminal window and pasted(ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 ) it in there and hit enter nothing showed up.

What am I doing wrong?????

Nothing. Apple disabled the command for the 13". You still can for the 15".
