I'm on a two-year contract (unlimited data still!) and got the deal. Maybe it was a mistake by the salesperson, but I'm not on next.
I called 3 AT&T company stores to verify before I posted my reply. So apparently, you made out! Kudos. There is a company store about 3 minutes from me and I was about to jump in the car-glad I called 1st.

You have to understand phones are getting so advanced that there's no need to upgrade every year. Plus online ordering has become so quick and painless that there's no need to waste gas & time in line.

So I preordered my Space Gray 6S from Apple and went to pick it up in the morning at 8AM. While I was there I asked if I can purchase an additional 64GB Pink Iphone (Rose Gold) for the wife but they told me I would have to get in queue.

After my purchase I drove down the street to an AT&T store to check their inventory. To my surprise, there was no line and I was in and out with a 64 GB Pink iPhone 6S No Contract phone in 5 mins.

I spent a total of 20 min at my Apple store in Queens. Walked in a few min before my appt, they checked me in right away and had my phone in front of me within 5 min. Did the credit check for the apple upgrade and before you knew it i was on my way back to work. Never in the history of iphone launches have i been in and out so quick of an Apple store on the first day of release. It's all because of the ordering process I believe, it's gotten very easy.

I waited 5 hours in line to pick up a pre-ordered iPhone 4 in 2010. In 2015, there is no line in front of apple store. Online stock wasn't sold out even after 4 days. Fedex guy dropped the iPhone box on the doorstep on 6pm last year but he did it on 12:30pm today. Something goes wrong.

Mosley due to the reservation system probably. I had a chat with the Apple Store above my shop this evening and they had crates full of iPhones, but the majority were already reserved online. They were receiving deliveries of reserved devices every few hours in batches.
