i just bought the new white macbook two days ago. it's my first mac! i love it. the sales people at the apple store rave about what a deal it is, it's almost exactly compatible to the aluminum internally; the alu is just a BIT faster.

i love my new macbook :)

Nothing like making waiting worse for me!;)

system usage problem

Hey everybody,

i bought the new white a week ago here in germany. So far, i am happy with it.
Unfortunately, i had a one inch long scratch on the topcase near the trackpad.
The keyboard is good.
Anyway, my biggest problem is the following:
When the macbook is booted after being switched off for a while it seems a bit slow. Then i found out, that the system usage in a state where no applications are installed or started is at about 40% because of the process "kernel-task" which has a 80% cpu-usage. Even several reboots and a complete reinstall of leopard (+updates) didn't change anything.
The strange thing is, that when i go to standby mode a few times, the system works fine because the kernel-task process is then down to about 2% in idle state.
Does anyone have the same problem or knows what it might be?
Possibly a bug in the OS in association with the new chipset?
Otherwise i'll return it to my computer store asap :-(

Cheers
Jan

I finally have my WhiteBook, which is an amazing update from my PowerBook G4! Update on Final Cut Studio 2: Final Cut Pro, DVDSP, Compressor and Motion are all working with flying colors. Color does work, but you really want to have more than the standard 2 Gig of RAM.

In short: FCS2 works on the WhiteBook :D

Does the white polycarbonate MacBook w/NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and the aluminum (Unibody) use the same or different LCD panels? Are the LCD manufacturer and model codes the same?

No the polycarbonate MacBook still uses a CCFL backlit LCD panel, while the aluminium ones use the LED backlit LCD panel. Resolution is the same; of course the aluminium display is a lot brighter.

I realize that there are 2 different kinds of backlighting used. Also the aluminum has the glass "bezel" versus the white's naturally glossy display, but what I'm curious to find out is if the physical LCD panel used in the 2 varieties of MacBook are the same model and made by the same manufacturer?

No, they are not. The display in the whitebook is crap, where as the display in the alubook is mediocre at best, and the display in the pro is decent.

Here's my most recent xbench to compare a little to whitebook.
upgrades listed in sig

memory and HDD upgrades definitely show..

Here are my results for XBench, I have bumped the ram to 4GB, and put in a 320GB 5400rpm WD Scorpio Blue Hard Drive. This is a white Nvidia Macbook.

Edit: Ran it again without the HD being tested, it scored 164.

I just compared my numbers to yours, specifically noting the memory tests. We both have 4GB and the DDR3 indeed tests faster. I was also curious about the 5400RPM vs my 7200RPM and the random access of the 7200 certainly scores lower, but sequential is up. just interesting, imo. thanks for the scores.

*edit* I too just ran w/o the disk test and got a 167.27, so very comparable numbers for the white to aluminum. Can't really go wrong with either!

I've had my white NVIDIA for a few weeks now, and it froze up on me twice today. I am now wondering if the Malware case I put on it is making it overheat. I downloaded the firmware update the day it came out. Before that, it never froze up. Any thoughts?

Screen Too Dim?

I purchased one of these new white Nvidia MacBooks, and am very happy with it EXCEPT the screen does not get nearly as bright as older MacBooks that I have seen. At maximum, the screen is about as bright as my friend's 1-year-old MacBook set 3 or 4 notches down from its maximum.

Can anyone confirm this as a problem with their new MacBooks?

Another oddity: When adjusting brightness there is absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between the maximum brightness setting and the notch below.

Does anyone out there with a new white MacBook have this same issue of finding no difference between the last two brightness settings?

Thanks for your help!

I can't tell a difference between the last two brightness settings either. While my screen seems to be as bright as my old one's screen, the color is vastly different. My old MacBook had a yellowish hue, while this one has a bluish hue. To double check, I pulled up the same picture on each, and I noticed that the old screen washes out detail in the black settings while the new MacBook showed the detail.

I have the same set up and got very similar scores. Of note as well, System Profiler does report my 800MHz RAM as running at 800MHz.

I just got my N whitebook today and I have to say I am impressed ..

I have owned 4 macbooks and this one certainly has a better screen than the last one ... about the same as the second gen black I owned which was my fav screen in a macbook.

While a little dim its a good screen!! = me shocked

last two brightness settings are almost the same with a tiny tiny change.

Very happy with the screen which has has always been the weakest point.

I read the USB ports are throttled when more than one is in use .

From the page:

"Unlike earlier MacBooks, where every USB port could provide 500 mA of power, only a single high-powered device can be attached to the USB ports, and software will enable one of its downstream ports to supply 500 mA of power. If a second high-powered device is attached, it will behave like a normal bus-powered hub and only provide 100 mA per downstream port."

anyone noticed problems with this ?

The MacBook screen is crappy 18-bit colour, not real 24-bit colour, but when connected to an external display, it can show 24-bit on the external, can't it?

I'm thinking in buying one of this Nvidia Macbooks, because I need a new laptop and FIREWIRE is a must. I'll use it for audio-recording with a Presonus Firestudio and have a couple of FW HD, so my only options are the white MB or a MBP, but I find the pros a little too expensive for my wallet. :(

I hope Apple won't include FW in the next Unibody Macbook revision or I will be really angry.
