Back on topic, I love it when PC users ask about installing/removing programs and hardware.

My girlfriend's Dad just got an eMac (their first Mac) and was trying to set up a USB printer in OS X. I walked him through the 3 steps or so over the phone, and he was like "That's it? Wow!" :D

I was at compusa the other day, and they always have this shelf of devices that have been returned, but are still working, almost all out of the box. My dad regards macs as horrible things :p (it was my mom that decided we needed a new comp, although this iMac is all mine :p). anyway, getting to the point, i take this logitech mouse, plug it into the free usb port on the imac laying next to that shelf, and i start using the mouse. And my dad is like wtf, how come I have to install drivers..I told him because its a pc. :)

I was once showing a PC user an iMac on the Apple website.

PC User: Wow! The iMac is so cool! I wish I had one.
Me: And Macs are more stable and easier to use than PCs.
PC User: You mean the iMac is a Mac!? I hate Macs! They don't work! I don't like the iMac!

I never got that, people will use a mac, play with it, love the features, the OS, etc, and when you tell them a mac they flip out and say I hate macs. whats the dealio? :D

I think that it's a case of a perpetuated stereotype... Oh, wait, that's another thread...

I like it! For a moment I was afraid it was a PowerBook, but then I recognized the full sized inverted-T arrow keys, and I knew it was a Windows laptop.

Thank you. That gave me a really good laugh!

I recently had a conversation with a coworker which went something like the following. It isn't a question (although it starts with one), but I thought it was pretty funny:

He: So, what did you do over the weekend?
Me: The weather was nice, so I did some inline skating around Tokyo for a few hours, and later went to a barbeque party with a bunch of friends. How was your weekend?
He: I reinstalled Windows on my machine at home.
Me: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. What happened to it?
He: I plugged in a second monitor.
Me: ... and?
He: The video driver tried to update the registry, messed something up, and crashed the machine. Then I couldn't reboot.
Me: I see... Well, at least it is working now, right?
He: Yep, now all I have to do is reinstall the applications and get my printer and stuff working again.
Me: Okay, then.. So what else did you do this weekend?
He: Oh, that was about it.

He is well aware of my preferences, but is quite impervious to any arguments in favor of Macs. I mentioned that I have reinstalled my OS exactly once in the last decade (and then only because I was upgrading the internal disk in my PowerBook), but he doesn't seem to think that such information is applicable to him. Oh well. At least my weekend was enjoyable. He can do whatever he wants with his.

you know - most pc users would like to switch to a mac.
One problem - price.
It would need the speed of a DP1.42 at the price of an imac.
Now, i know apple cant do this but alot of people i know wish they had ewnough to afford a mac.

BTW - why does winamp include an OGG decoder and iTunes not?

I blew wine out of my nose when I saw that.

Then I saw that it was a Thinkpad. I'm a bit of a fan of Thinkpads - I have two. Tough damn machines.

http://jsp.vs19.net/osx/oggtunes.php

Playing ogg vorbis files using iTunes

Download the quicktime-vorbis component; you can find it on the download page of the Quicktime Components Project at sourceforge.

Optionally: Extract the OggVorbis.sit file you just downloaded by double-clicking it.

Copy the OggVorbis.component file you now have to /Library/Quicktime.

Restart iTunes

Enjoy!!!!!

Working on a powerbook @ school:

writing a text for a kind of report i had to do in class.
a fried stands by and days wow , cool computer. that s nice.
i show him the dock reaction: wow, that s need.
when i finish, i just close the powerbook, he asks me if i don t have to shut it down. i say no . Once more he thinks that wonderful. But then he sees the apple logo, and says urgh. that is an apple? you wrote an text on it right? but they are incompatible, and you can only do video editing on them. I have never seen a mac compatible printer...

people, apple has to do something on it s image....

When people say the text thing, or the printer thing, I ask them if they have heard of MS office, they say yes, I say you can get it for Mac, and on the printer thing I ask them if they have ever heard of USB, most say yes

people, apple has to do something on it s image....

I have those types of conversations at least once a week. :( It is really getting me frustrated to have to keep telling people about the iApps, Office for Mac, and how macs can do anything pc's can do, including a lot of gaming.

maybe you should make a pamphlet and hand them out everytime someone asks you those questions..:p :D

Apple already made such a pamphlet. It's in "The new iMac" and it's called "A special message to Windows users: Welcome". It contains five myths about the Mac and Windows PCs:

Everyone uses Windows;
Macs don't work with PCs;
The software I need isn't available for Macs;
Macs don't run Microsoft Office;
Windows has caught up with the Mac.

Of course, anyone who asks me "Does it run [Microsoft] Office?" gets pointed to OpenOffice.org. I've told several Apple Store customers that if they didn't waste money on Microsoft, they could afford to buy an additional gigabyte of RAM and a disk upgrade. They usually don't believe it, so I download the package and show them. They usually exclaim: "That isn't Microsoft Office?"

hey, now that you mentioned it, i actually have one of those. it's the one promoting OS X. it's very nice and contains all the myths, and mac's advatages when compared to windows. Apple should expand on it. :)

contents of the pamphlet: (front cover is X desktop.)
-Everything is easier on a Mac.
-Getting started.
-Surfing the Net.
-Going Wireless.
-Sending email.
-IM
-Managing your Music.
-Listening on the go.
-Making movies.
-Creating DVDs.
-Enjoying your photos.
-Sharing files.
-Fact or Fiction.

I would have thought putting a PB on a towel was the best way to heat it up.

Yeah, it is. That's why I very rarely do it. A magazine works best. Or better yet, put it on a flat surface, and lift the back side up with a very thin book, to allow airflow underneath. This works really well.

I saw a product that was a pair of hemi-spheres that would stick to the back corners of a 'Book, effectively giving it taller feet in back, and allowing greater air flow. I think they were something like $19. I'm not sure what website I saw them on, though.

what I get a lot is "but its an apple..", and this is after ten minutes of explaining the 17'' powerbook, compared to its competition. I mentioned AE, bluetooth, biggest widescreen aluminum notebook, only slot loading dvd burner on market,
OS X, the iApps, how you can use all your same apps (i mention word, WMP, msn messenger, YIM..,.) And they respond, "but its an apple". Unfortunately this is how the majority of teenagers with pc's look at the Apple vs. PC argument, "but its an Apple".

Well until Apple 'rescues' us from having to do this for them by doing it themselves ( ), we need do do this for ourselves.

Since these guys seem to have a problem with Apple, ask what it is. Soooo...

Them:"but its an Apple"
You:"And..." Expecting an answer.
Them:"But you can't do anything with an Apple."
You:"Did you just sleep through what I just showed you, <gratuitus :D > or..."

A. "...are you Deaf?"
B. "...are you Stupid?"
C. "...were you dropped on your head when you were younger?"
D. "...you weren't breast fed were you?"
E. All of the above.

Sorry. Got carried away. I hope that helps - getting them to explain themselves.
