Re: "I can't use Ethernet! I need the Internet!"

I need to be compatible with the real world, so I won't buy a computer that doesn't already have the Internet."

OMG... This person thinks computers come with the internet? I mean, I can understand not understanding what ethernet is. Most home users never need to deal with ethernet, and so naturally have no idea. But I am quite astonished by people who really don't understand what the internet really is.

Well to be honest, there are many people who are not too computer literate, and of course girls have always had less interest in technology, and I don't understand why. I mean its not like computer is a neccesity to live and if it works, why should I know how it works attitude. I have yet to meet aa girl which is comptuer literate

Well, here's one 'girl' that is computer literate. In fact, I'm a software developer. [insert sarcastic gasp here]

You need to get out more.

No joke. I've known plenty of women who were quite computer literate. Some of them in the computer industry, like jywv8. My experience has been that the proportion of computer illiteratacy has little or nothing to do with gender. Now, age is another matter...

I'm sorry for offending you, but I think the majority...would be the word.

I'm not only pointing at girls though, alot of men are not too good with computers either. I would say the new generation is better at it cause they get the chance to adapt when they were young and of course there is windows which made everyone like computers suddenly. Machintosh computers were just always over priced.

Shouldn't that be?

"Oh you have an Apple! Do you have Oregon Trail?!"

they weren't joking, and it made me wish i could say yes.

Well, I think I'd have to disagree. Darwin awards are given to those who do something stupid which results in their death, thereby removing them from the gene-pool. And, I have yet to hear of the choice to use Windows leading to anyone's death.

they're also awarded to those who, through stupid actions, make themselves unable to procreate.

example: a guy was having an argument with his woman, so he pulled out a gun to make his point a little more clear. then when he was through he angrily shoved it into his belt, causing an accidental discharge, and blew away a gonad or two.

That story about Thailand's finance minister being locked in his BMW when the on-board computer (running Windows...) crashed is getting close <shivers>.

I used to manage our departments computer lab at uni (50 odd Macs) - and funnily enough I can't recall any stupid questions. Lots of normal questions, like "where's the start menu?", "where's the disk drive?" but that was really to be expected. Most people went away quite impressed with Macs (while I grew to loath system 8...).

The worst one was just recently. I met a friend just after I'd been to the Apple Store, and had some prices of the 12" PB in my hand. She's like Ally McBeal on speed, so you'll have to use that to visualise the exchange....

Her: "Sweetie sweetie sweetie sweetie, how are you, oh look are you going to buy a new computer!?"
Me: "Yup!" <shows her the page>
Her:"<dripping with distain>....errr.....it's an Apple?"
Me:"umm, yer." <fishing now> "Cute isn't it?"
Her:<ignores that>"Why would you get an Apple?"
Me:"What else is there?"<lame grin>
Her:"But darling, they're for ad creative types and gays."
Me:"Oh, look - Drinks!"

As she knows nothing about computers what-so-ever I can only assume that there are a lot of people out there who genuinely believe this.

Oh, and no, I'm not gay. :p

friend: i'm tired of Premiere. i want something better.
me: have you tried Final Cut Pro?
friend: is that better than Premiere?
me: well...*describes advantages fcp has over premiere*
friend: cool! can you burn me a copy?
me: no, it's mac-only.
friend: ...Premiere's better.

Actually it was a DOS: ProDOS, the OS of the Apple ][ series (][, ][Plus, ][e, ][c, ][gs)

No. It was Moto.

I believen the chip in my old Apple ][Plus was a 6502.
so if you had like a 386 you couldn't get Oregon Trail? i couls swear it was a something-86 i used it on.

Unlike the 1st gen Tibooks, right?

I have one of those, and they get hot . In fact, when I have shorts on, I have to put a towel or magazine on my lap to keep from getting burned. And yes, it gets that hot even when its sitting on my desk.

I didn't even know where to begin . . .

I work at a high school which went PC two years ago. The art department was the lone holdout so we still have 20 or so macs.

I am looking at getting the new 12"PB, so I talked to our tech guy about getting a ethernet cord to hook up my PB to the school network. He says, "yes you can hook up your PB, but why would you want to? What's wrong with your Dell?"

So many answers came to mind . . .I didn't even know where to begin . . .:)
