I asked the PC IT technician if I could bring in my iBook and connect it to the network of about 50 200MHz PCs. He said no, its impossible to network PCs and Macs. A day later I bring my iBook in and connect an ethernet cable to it. I use the Go: Connect to Server command and ask the PC guy what is the name of the network. I type in the address and I am file sharing with PCs nearly instantly, I can also use the 768k/sec DSL without filters, UT2K3 Demo here I come!!

Also, at a local PC World, I asked about the iMac and what software you could buy for it. He said you couldnt buy any and the only way you could put software onto it is to download it. Apparently thats why its called an "Internet Mac"

LOL, and these two people are trained!!!:)

Well until Apple 'rescues' us from having to do this for them by doing it themselves ( ), we need do do this for ourselves.

Since these guys seem to have a problem with Apple, ask what it is. Soooo...

Them:"but its an Apple"
You:"And..." Expecting an answer.
Them:"But you can't do anything with an Apple."
You:"Did you just sleep through what I just showed you, <gratuitus :D > or..."

A. "...are you Deaf?"
B. "...are you Stupid?"
C. "...were you dropped on your head when you were younger?"
D. "...you weren't breast fed were you?"
E. All of the above.

Sorry. Got carried away. I hope that helps - getting them to explain themselves.

I am so going to use the breast fed explanation :p:p:D

Well, I think the marketting and economic truth is that changing these types of misconceptions is actually, and must be, up to us. Advertising can only do so much. The rest is up to places like the Apple Store, and people like us.

I once brought my PBook to my school and my teacher was amazed that I could connect to the wireless network w/o knowing any settings (frankly I was a little amazed too, being a recent switcher and just finding out that my PB had an Airpot card). I tried to set up a printer, but my teacher didn't know the name of it on the server. Oh well, the biggest responce is "You paid how much!" I got the 15" with all the options, so it was like $3909. That includes a case, MSoffice, Wacom tablet, and iPod.

"is cupertino the coach of milan (soccer team)?" - that was my ex bf. i think i don't have to tell you why he is ex. :p

i've brought mine to school just about every day for the last 6 months, buddy.

I bring mine to school every day, too. It is an iBook, but it cost me about $2000 with AppleCare.

As long as you treat it right and keep your eye on it you should be fine.

Don't do something stupid like leaving it somewhere where you can't keep your eyes on it...

Hey, that's nothing. I brought my PB3400 to school with me every day when it was new. For those that don't recall, it was a $5600 laptop, not including the extras. And that was the dollar in 1997, when it was stronger than it is now...

Actually, Centrino doesn't refer to the CPU (that being a Pentium-M) centrio refers to the CPU/chipset/WIFI hardware combination..

so yeah, you CAN connect to wifi hotspots with the Centrino "cpu"
If it doesn't have the Wifi hardware, it's not Centrino anymore.
(someone may have said this elsewhere in this thread, but I'm working my way through it as best I can... it needs a 'tag to reply later' button methinks.)

I think what coopdog meant is that his dad thinks you can open the laptop ANYWHERE (ie not neccessarily in a wifi spot) and be online. I know you can pretty much do this anywhere with your phone and GPRS, but that's another ball game.

And CDMA!!!!! :D

My Verizon phone works better than any GPRS phone I've ever seen, and if I pay extra I can even get higher data rates than GPRS can.

i meant is that a lot of anti-mac people might destroy it. If i brought a powerbook to school at my school, and i was using it at school, someone would prolly knock it off the table intentionally, then spit on me and say buy a pc loser.

Sounds like a great school.

Used to get a similar destruct mentality between surfers on boards and us surfers in canoes. Its amazing how hard they had to try to put a hole on a canoe strapped to a car roofrack, but they did. We had an easy job patching up though.

Dont think the PB is quite as robust somehow!

It's a sadly typical school, in which the safety of personal property is not paramount to anything.

My art college supplied us with big lockers, but we had to buy the padlocks from them too - it turns out there were 4 keys for all the padlocks - so in theory you could open a mate's next door locker, er, by mistake. A shambles!

y como se dice esa frase en espanol? :)

The only clue i have of US schools is from TV and film - Class of '84? Not just property at risk.

I think British kids taking their laptop to school would get the crap kicked out of them for being pretentious. Its still strange to see students at the university with laptop bags. A different stage of the "civilisation" cycle I guess.
