A little more subtle ignorance...

"If I switch I have to buy new copies of Office and stuff right?"

Two things I always find wrong with this:

1) Umm yeah, your Windows version won't run.

2) You really should buy a different copy for every machine you have, anyway. Not a good excuse not to switch.

"But you can't upgrade your video card!"

While it's true, I always explain that I don't need to because Macs ship with good video cards (and in my case, I have no need for better graphics).
They never get it.

That, and any comment about floppy drives.
The video card in your iMac sucks compared to the good stuff. PC users want the best they can get for gaming. Even the PowerMac is behind the times (just started shipping 9700 Pro...)

Macs are good for one basic reason; OS X.

despite the legal issues surrounding it, I almost did not switch to mac, due to Kazaa; as a teenager it just becomes part of your computing lifestyle. Unfortunately many people believe that you can only Do P2P on a pc, people have never heard of that "fruit application".

No, most think AOL is the internet. The idiots at my office don't understand that wil DSL they don't have to start AOL to go to a website!

Of course, the people that post to this board complaining about stupid PC users, the guys that post on PC forums complain about stupid PC and Mac users. Most computer users are stupid about computers. That's all there is to it.

don't forget to mention that there are alos stupid mac users too! :p Like my school's librarian, she is a big mac user, but thinks that everything that goes wrong is the user's fault, because lord knows nothin can go wrong with an apple :p:p

Since getting my mac i've opened a few eyes, i get the usual questions.

"What software can you get for the mac"?

My response would be what do you want?

Or... "Is it compatible, can it play files"?

I say yes its MORE compatible, its windows that is ignorant and incompatible, its just that windows is in the majority, infact the mac, just like linux supports more formats than windows.

"Ohhh..." is the response.

However most discussions boil down to gaming, i had a friend who just bought a toshiba laptop so he can play generals. While it is impressive for a laptop, good battery life and power, it just sucks with running XP and it weighs more and cost him MORE to get. However, he is happy so thats that, he wanted to "do" gaming.

Ironic really when he understood how much better the mac was but failed on games, his friend threw up the usual arguments against owning a mac and i made the better arguement. I had won the argument against both of them, price wasn't a factor just games.

However, his friend who was against the mac is now getting a 15GB iPod (After seeing my 15GB) and was joking that he was going to own a little peice of Apple hardware. He saw my iPod and loved it and he has tons more cd's than me. I had converted somebody without trying while that person was negative towards Apple.

Strange strange...

Oo. You just reminded what really gets me:

"There aren't any good games on the Mac."

or, the more accurate...

"The good games take a while to come out on the Mac."

Y'see, I have a base problem with the philosophy behind this.

If you want to play games - don't buy a computer! They're not optimized for this. Get a console, get better play, and save a buck or two.

To me it's like someone telling me that my shovel sucks because his can drive more nails than mine.

With regard to gaming, hppefully MacSoft pull their finger out and start bringing out more games, with the expansion sets.

But yeah, a console is alot easier, i'd probably get a gamecube anyway if i really wanted to play games.

I have to disagree with this at least with respect to First Person Shooters. They are much better on the computer than a console due to the mouse keyboard combo. And heck I love playing games more on my mac than I do on my Gamecube. Would be same way if I had any of the other consoles too.

This is what happened when TELEWEST sent someone to install my cable internet connection. One man installed the wires with no problems, and then another arrived an hour later to install and configure the software.

Yeah I had the same problem at first they said it wouldnt work with OSX then when the guy came and said it wouldnt work I set it up in front of him in literally 30secs, without using the CD he insisted I would need. Then he didn't belive it would work and I had to browse the internet and check my mail to convince him, they just don't seem able to comprehend someone with limited knowledge can do a lot more on a mac than a PC, they have always been that way and I hope they always will be. Now all I need is a job at PC World to sabotage them from the inside.

I don't think all the PC users are ignorant. Maybe a few, but for most of these comments, the people just don't know. So instead of telling them they're ignorant or laughing at them, why don't you just let them use your computer for a few minutes? If you don't have one handy, just explain that the mac can do all the stuff windows does and a lot of times better and thats why you use a Mac.

I was at Best buy trying to score a new ipod on Saturday. Since it was busy, there were a bunch of people waiting for a sales person. In conversation I found out that this nice lady and myself were trying to get MP3 players. We talked about the one she was looking at for her son and then I mention that I was looking at the ipod. We went through all the differences of the one she was looking at and the ipod. She asked the usual, "does it work with windows" and other tech stuff. Ten minutes later she bought a 10 gig. It was through education that made her buy it (although my sales skills did help). When she unpacked it at the register (because I wanted to actually play with one and BestBuy didn't have one to play with), she was in awe at how cool it was. I ended up with nothing because Best Buy still didn't have my 30 gig in yet :(.

Moral of this story...teach these people about Apple products. Don't slam them for something they don't know or understand. Even if they get nasty and say how much better the PC is than a Mac, stay calm and explain. Eventually they'll come around or at least won't have anything bad to say. We'll have a lot more Mac users if this happens.:)

You are very right. Thank you for the perspective on this.

Personally I do sell Apple to those who are ignorant. I just find when someone who is ignorant, and hostile, coming at me swinging bad information, they will only be convertable when you grab their "kudgel" and smack them back with it.

I find that only after that, they'll be the most likely to listen.

In my case with my friend for when he wanted his laptop this is what i did. I was simply recommending a product that i felt was better like anybody else would when they purchase something and like it, they want others to get enjoyment from it.

However an iPod is different to a mac when justifying its features, capabilites and performance.

The iPod is automatically different to the mac because there is so much FUD with owning a mac but not an ipod (other than it costs more, and the opinion is it seems worth the extra cost), its abilities are not so clear. However with an iPod, people know what an mp3 player is, tell them its tiny, lightweight and a wonder of design and they will look at it with a different view. Its a new product for a new upcoming mainstream market, unlike a mac which has been pushed aside because of cheaper options and over the years has slowly retarded on itself to have this image where its incapable of doing anything because 99% of the world uses something else, something more familar from a company with a very large monopoly.
There is no monopoly in the mp3 market, an important difference.
Plus people don't fancy changing their computer as easily as being recommended an iPod and buying it. This is where you would have to educate a PC user on the advantages of owning a mac.
A reason why my friend is going to buy an iPod but not a computer, to much is at stake for them because of uncertainty.
I merely use your examples as an easy way of explaining myself. Its open to interpretation however.

I'm not saying you are wrong i merely highlighting the difference on how much harder it is when choosing a mac or an ipod.

Very true and thanks for bringng that up. The computer replacement wouldn't be as easy as the ipod. However, the feature that the lady liked the best was being able to effortlessly go from main menu to songs to calender to games. It was the gui and how simple it was for her to use. (of course the new ipods size, looks, touch buttons were very impressive as well but the gui did the trick).

Now, OSX although on a different playing field is not to far of. OSX is elegant and very simple. As one person said to me, "Wow, things are so much clearer". This wasn't the screen she was talking about. It was how easy it was for her to view a image, find programs in the dock with the magnification roll over, how you open itunes and everything is just there, open iphoto and edit the pipctures, etc. Basically, when she had a light bulb come on and she understood what was going on with the computer.

That has happen to me twice. People like the more simplistic approach Apple has taken. Things do just work with an Apple.

I bet if I had a PowerBook handy at BestBuy and showed her a few things and let her play around with a ipod and camera on it, she would be buying a Mac. I however don't work at BestBuy nor do they sell Apple so that never happened. But I bet if more people taught others about Apple instead of getting into a debate, there would be more people using Apple's!

hmmm this teaching method works.

i had a friend. he (as most do, still) bashed macs. he, on the other hand like to play starcraft. So, when he came over my place .....

i showed him my mac. he asked about the stability and heat and noise (MDD DP 1G i have). I said, ok - i will crash the mac for you. the pic i have attached shows the apps i opened (xcpt idvd2,imv2,it3,ip1 - and that is acrobat 5 full). all at once. the fan did not increase in speed. i could still use the computer (albeit slowly).
And then we laughed. I had opened them in a 30 sec time span (using an applescript) not to mention my bkgrnd apps. he was suprised.
And we then (after going to my norm) played starcraft. we agreed though - the one buttton mouse should be replace by a two button version.

Now, he is not getting a desktop mac. But when he goes to uni, if he getd into the course he wants (and parents want) his dad will get him whatever powerbook he wants (likely 12" for portability) and whichever iPod is in the middle of the range so that he also gets the extras.

They are getting from HK though as it is cheaper than here (AUS).

The end. Another mac user who is getting a mac through actually using one.

forgot the pic

Just been reminded of another gem from my Spanish PC software pirate circle of friends.

I got in from work and my mate grabs me and says he has a little experiment he wants to try with my PB. He hates my mac BTW.

Him - Do you reckon it will read this USB memory stick thing? (Smug doubting grin on face)

Me - Dont know, but we can but try (expressionless but quietly confident)

I pressed the space bar and the PB woke from sleep.

Him - (Wide eyed, bottom lip almost twitching) What! You just booted up the computer? Thats fast.

I am a patient humble man and ungloating I explained about sleep function. I then had to unplug my USB mouse so that his fat ugly stick would fit in the back. Obviously it was showing on the screen before I had time to think.

He is waving my remote Gyro mouse in the air laughing, saying it didnt work in the air or on the desk. Again, I quietly told him why.

Him - So what programme do you have to open to see the files?

Me - Er, dunno, how about click on the drive icon and see what explodes.

Within three clicks his fat ugly mug is splattered all across my screen ina welter of photos. Still not satisfied, he want s a slideshow with music. It is here that I let the side down folks. I know its a piece of pee to use iPhoto, but I couldnt pull it off before his 30 second attention span imploded.

Again I let the side down and pulled the stick staright out the back without ejecting it to trash first. I never did find out if it corrupted his stick, but it sure as hell did nothing to my PB.

God I love my Mac!

Thats impossible, too. The apple logo and spinner doesn't come up when you boot up off a linux cd. I'm positive microsoft will not have an apple logo on their install cd. The blue screen would not come up. Macs cannot run x86 code.
