- Iphone chips are at 3nm, they can barely get any smaller, so no more big cpu/gpu upgrades forever
- Camera upgrades are only limited to increasing optical zoom, in the next 5 years all Apple is gonna do is slowly increase the zoom to 10x, quality has barely changed in the last 5 years
- No other "big features" left besides TouchID under display
- No big cosmetic changes left for the phone, since the Iphone X it's basically looked the same every year

Basically there's nothing left to look forward to. Iphones have reached their peak.

Not necessarily. Upgrading screen with less borders, getting rid of the dynamic island and just making it a hole punch display that's minimal, foldables.. there's a big future ahead. Came from an S23 Ultra and Z Fold 5 (tested them both out for the last month before going back to Apple) and if Apple ever incorporated some of this stuff.. there's a lot to look forward to. Just wish they'd do it sooner as this tech is 3-4 years old at this point.

Edit: Updated battery tech for several day long battery life (cause we haven't even gotten to the new battery tech yet that's about to come in the next couple years) - under display cameras, Apple Watches can incorporate facetime on your wrist (cameras) and so on. A device that stretches (foldable screen that wraps around the device that goes smaller and bigger without a folding mechanism) is already new tech coming out to Android, which will be in Apple's future.. eventually.

People say this every year 😄

Just hold onto your phone and don’t update every year… you’ll see a BIG change when you finally upgrade your device.

I would strongly disagree on there being nothing left to upgrade. IMO there are tons of things which can still be innovated and improved upon. If Apple listened to the naysayers then we would still all be just using previous generation phones forever.

You forgot USB-C which is now fixed per mandate. No more development to be expected here.
But I still see a lot of improvments on the CPU. New architecture, 2nm, new gen neuronal engine etc everything is possible here.
cam: zoom, bigger sensors etc

Do you have a crystal ball? If you do kindly use it for the stock market or cryptocurrencies instead.

2nd there is a roadmap towards sub-1nm.

Anyone who claims the limit is 'physics' have not signed the NDA for future die shrinks. They're just echo chambering whatever forums and journalists says.

Places like MR exists to inform you half the time with truth and half the time with lies.

If you want "tangible" upgrades that you feel you are in the "future" then replace every

- 8yrs: Watch, iPhones & iPad
- 10yrs: Mac & Apple TV

Anyone who has a 2012 Mac 22nm will be amazed with a 2024 Mac 3nm.

Would like to see Lifepo4 batteries which would last as long as the phone lasts.

Basically there's nothing left to look forward to. Iphones have reached their peak.

Foldables, ecosystem integration, next-gen camera developments, solid state batteries, you name it.

"Significant" upgrades stopped happening around 2010, when you could whip out your iPhone 4, look up street directions and navigate in an unknown city with a dynamic map and compass on your palm, while the plebeians resorted to make sense of the pattern of birds flying around or some equally archaic practice I can't remember.

From that point onwards, everything else has been incremental.

If you are talking about a phone being a phone, then yes, we have reached peak.
But if you want your phone to also be something else, well, not quite yet, but perfecting existing feature or adding new gimmick doesn’t bring much YOY.
Maybe If there is an iPhone that you never need to charge, then yes, groundbreaking.

Nodes are indeed slowing down along with density, but there are major advances in chip stacking and packaging.

Similar to logic, CMOS sensors are going stacked. We see this with iPhone 15 already. More layers means more light sensitivity without the need for larger sensors.

Folding and rolling displays are the next logical step for iPhone.

Huawei Mate 60 already has standard satellite voice and texting service. Another thing for iPhone to follow.

In my opinion, in the coming years the major focus from Apple will be on the Vision pro headset. Apple will show all the big innovations in this area.
The iPhone will continue to remain essential & relevant. But I think many of the innovations that may come to the iPhone will be to compliment Visio pro. We are already seeing that with spatial video.

Yeah, so you keep saying in every single one of your posts. We get your point, you don’t like the iPhone 15. Move on.

It’s a normal evolution after 16 years of iPhones. We’ve had the same situation with computers for much longer. An M2 MacBook Air is obviously much, much faster than a 2010 MacBook Air, and the screen is also a lot better, but essentially, it’s the same product. Similarly, all improvements since the iPhone X have been incremental, all improvements since the Apple Watch Series 4, and everything since the Apple TV HD. These products have all matured by now, which is why you don’t need to buy a new one every 1-2 years anymore (unless you’re a tech enthusiast like most of us here).

That’s also why Apple is now moving focus to the Vision Pro, streaming, services, etc…

We face that kind of problem everywhere.
First: Names like "3nm technology" are pretty much just fancy names. The actual transistors are not 3nm in size. There is just no regulation that you are not allowed to call any size by any names.

Second: We reached the minimum size on a physical level. Having structures inside transistors smaller than 4-5 Atoms wont work as electrons will start to tunnel.

Third: Our battery technology is on hold as well. We do have a lot of "good" news and papers, but nothing that will change our daily life for the next 10-20 years.

All in all we cant expect huge technical leaps and better hardware as we had between 2010 and 2020. It's interesting to see, how deep learning algorithms will impact and streamline our life, but that wont be on a sole hardware level as a lot of people wish for.

The iPhone has plateaued within the slab form factor, but like others have said foldables bring a new canvas of possibilities for Apple and I'm sure they are working on them as we speak.

Camera sensors, lenses and technology can be improved.

Batteries… here’s a lot to improve

CPUs: cool we have powerful cpus, how do we cool them? There’s still serious room for improvement. Especially now that Apple is looking into gaming.

We are at the point right now of incremental upgrades, nothing revolutionary currently. I’d love to see an Apple fold however and they could easily pull that off

There will be always some feature upgrade each year. I trust Apple has a lot of creativity on their sleeves to make iPhone better and better each year. They have a lot of talented employees! Since iPhone is their main bread and butter for their business life, it is Apple’s priority to make their product better annually. I have faith on them.

They could pull that off, but the R&D and cost to other sub-manufacturers and programming would severely cut into the profit margin of the phone. And there folks
is your answer - Apple Inc. is a business to make money.

No, they are going into subscriptions and services that maybe connected to the phone. The phone is Apple’s biggest problem and they have to move away from it to survive.

iOS comes for free for one year with a new device. After one year only basic features are for free for the rest a subscription is needed 🫣

They will give you two phones with all the bells and whistles but you have to pay a subscription to unlock each upgrade from the base price. 10X zoom - subscription. Ray Tracing - subscription.

They can add all the bells and whistles to every phone and keep it cheap to use as the phone itself will be subscription based! 🤣

So you pay for the phone but you never own because apple has the control over it and can disable functions any time. 😬
