The iPhone mini did sell millions. Alas, too few millions for Apple.
Exactly, and I don’t like Tim, mildly speaking, never have and dislike the guy more as time goes.
It’s all about the stockholders and the money, he don’t give a f-k about customers.

If there’s no Phone I love when my Mini don’t serve my needs anymore, I will buy a Samsung Flip.
Dang I might do it earlier, as it looks gorgeous. Rather give the lousy OS a shot then buy an Apple product I don’t love.

I’m gonna share my thoughts, I’m sure many people will disagree, but this is opinion about why the mini failed in sales.

First of all, I personally find the iPhone mini screen too small, specifically too narrow compared to the aspect ratio of the mini, and the width of the iPhone 8. I’m not saying that I prefer the width of the regular 6.1 inch iPhone, because that’s a bit too wide. However, I think making it a tiny bit bigger, in the realm of 5.8 inches, would have made it the perfect sized iPhone for me. Emphasis on for me.

The second cause I think affected the iPhone mini sales is the naming. I think the mini name would have made people think it was less worth, and naming it the 5.4” iPhone and 6.1” inch iPhone would have had less impact on sales.

But still, I think a bigger size like a 5.6 or 5.8” would have been perfect. While trying the iPhone on the stores, I’ve heard so many times people trying the mini in front of me say ”no, not this one, this is too small”, that honestly I think they went too far miniaturizing the phone, and they made a niche pretty happy, but they lost a big chunk of the mainstream sales.

3% is still millions of phones. I hate it if companies focus on the mainstream taste. Facebook also often canceled features that were only used by a few percent of the users, if if those few percent were tens of millions.
Especially if it offers something unique. The 15 and 15 Pro lineup is overlapping everywhere and much of it is just redundant, especially when also considering 14 Pros. But not with all my money can I buy a well-specced phone with a convenient form factor.

In an Apple Store? They've removed them from the online store.

In any case, it will probably be like the first-generation HomePod, which was still available from Apple in Japan for about a month after it was no longer sold in the US.
Shopping malls etc. providers as well. They did last year as well.

Also, Apple still made money with the Minis, but found out they have a wider profit margin with the larger phones. The first thing people need to keep in mind is when Apple changes/discontinues a product, it is always in the best interest of profit & shareholders/dividends with no loyalty to people who have invested in their ecosystem.
I'm a shareholder, and I want to see big free cash flow per share, and don't give a damn about profit margin. But it looks like someone keeping Tim Apple in his job is obsessed with it. Also the Mini had very little impact on the demand of other sizes, while Plus simply just cannibalizes the normal iphone and the pro max. I guess the number of people who bought an iphone becasue of the existence of the plus is in the single digits.

I hope the mini comes back for the 16/17 iterations. The owners of the mini phones like the form factor bot the killer feature and are more likely to upgrade on a 3/4 year schedule that annually. Same goes for the plus sized phones.

I have a 12 mini and it’s awesome. Holding out for a 16 mini 🤞

A young student (13 years old) of mine saw one of my old iPhone 4s's that I use to play BGM at my school. She spent a good ten minutes playing a few of the games on it and browsing the music collection.

Her final comment: It's so cute and small but "seemed a bit too slow". I told her it was slow because it was older than she is and they no longer make phones this size any more.

She showed me the iPhone 11 she used and said she wanted her phone's speed but iPhone 4s size.

Both my daughters still use old cast-off iPhone 4s's as their music players of choice. But since fake repacks are now almost the only batteries still available here in Japan both are greedily eying my last remaining pair of iPhone 5s's... which are even lighter the the 4s...

With the 13 at $599, 13 mini at $499 would've been too good as an entry-level product.
They would rather sell the crippled SE at $429.
Exactly, the mini is a good product and would convince a lot of people not to spend money on highrt price models when they don't have to. The SE allows them to eventually upsell to the customer.

I have a mini 13 and it's great.

For doom scrolling and phone addiction nothing beats the bigger screen. When you want to live in the world a smaller phone is amazing. Shame it’s not making a come back. I’ll have to shift to whatever phone is lightest in the future.

OH FFS. How about iPhone Mini did EXACTLY what Apple wanted it for?

iPhone 11 was Retailing for $699.

iPhone 12 Mini was $699 and iPhone 12 at $799.

The introduction of Mini Pushed the standard iPhone model up by $100.

And it worked. Judging from all the comment no remember iPhone used to cost $699. ( Dont tell me about inflation etc, this is not about BOM cost or COGS, it is all about Pricing Strategy. )

I would not be surprised if iPhone Mini form factor be introduced to the iPhone SE range in 2025 just to push up the iPhone SE ASP by another $50.

Meh I know people love conspiracy theories these days but I am not buying this.

They introduced the mini as another product line to make money on. It didn't sell well enough to justify the existence continuing so it ended.

It is that simple.

I really like this setup. Magsafe battery pack resolves low battery capacity but iphone 12 series overheats. 13 mini is considerably better.

It’s really weird and useless selling iphone 13 and iphone 14. They use the same chip, also still selling SE for $429 is quite useless i believe. Instead apple should have called iphone mini as the new iphone SE and priced for $499 and remove iphone 13 too.
