Amazing the newest version of macOS runs on Apple Silicon AND Intel right now and Windows 11 only on Qualcomm chips. How the opened / closed platforms have changed!
Not that amazing. Windows 11 runs on AMD and Intel, in addition to Qualcomm. It’s not limited to “only on Qualcomm.”

Then why are you running a Mac? I use mine for business and run a business with opensource and development. Use what it needed. If you have only Windows-based work software you need to run it on that platform, on company hardware, or a system sanctioned by them. I don't understand the personal laptop running a non-company OS to run their software.
I don't use a Mac but know people who use Macs but also use Boot Camp or whatever software to run Windows based software.
Windows based PCs aren't difficult but that lots of people make it difficult for not learning how to use it properly. You hear them complaining and how they switched to Macs.
Yet those same people take time to learn how to use a Mac and still use their Windows based software. Hypocrites!

The only issue I have run into with the Parallels/Windows Insider Preview setup is that the Windows 11 Pro OS is crippled. Finding apps to run properly on this setup has been a bit trying. I love the speed and battery life of the 16 M1 Pro laptop, but for real compatibility, you should stick with intel.

I don't get why people are so upset about this. You see these kinds of deals in business everywhere, and all the time. It probably went kinda like this: "Hey Qual, we want to develop cheap low end laptops for web browsing and office, and since intel chips are furnaces we'd like you to do that." And Qual was like "Sure broth, but we gotta emulate all that stuff so that's gonna cost us a boat load of engineers doing funky magic. How bout you give us a 5 years head start so we'll at least recover the cost." - "Sure mate, whatever."

Microsoft has no intention to bar any hardware from using their software, as all Microsoft really cares about is selling their software. The only reason the Surface line exists is to push the platform Microsoft Windows runs on, as x86 devices were (and are) falling behind, making Windows less attractive. Microsoft has no intention of making money selling Surface devices. In fact I'm sure they make a loss doing so, or at least have for the longest time.

Apple on the other hand couldn't care less if Windows runs on their Mac. They would hardly benefit from it, and they just don't want to put in the work - but it wouldn't hurt them, either. Same goes with Linux which Apple doesn't actively prevent from running, but doesn't help running either. And they very much could prevent it.

In the PC space Apple sells devices, first and foremost. It's something else with iOS devices, as Apple is milking the App Store as long as they can, but even there the focus is on selling phones and tablets, or otherwise you could get all those Apple services on other devices. But you can't - because they want you to buy an iPhone or Apple Watch. You can buy Microsoft Services for Linux. They don't care. And since you can buy everything Microsoft cares about for the Mac... they have to problem with it.

In a nutshell: Apple makes services and software to sell hardware. Microsoft makes hardware to sell software and services.

So, you see, in a sense, Microsoft and Apple have stopped competing quite a long time ago. If it wouldn't prompt the biggest antitrust action in history, Apple and Microsoft would be happy going together as long as it benefited them.

I don't get why people are so upset about this.
As you said..
"Apple on the other hand couldn't care less if Windows runs on their Mac.
Microsoft has no intention to bar any hardware from using their software, as all Microsoft really cares about is selling their software."

But many users want the best of both worlds.
Strict Mac users don't care and strict Windows users don't care, either.
But there are those Mac users that must run Windows software for whatever reasons (like gamers) or Window users that want to own a Mac but still run Windows software for whatever reasons.

I would like to try a MBP but can't since the business software I use is Only made for Windows.
Don't need to pay an exorbitant amount for an overpriced Mac laptop when a Windows laptop is fine for everything else, esp. off hours, like email, online browsing, watching videos, etc...
Priced out a decent MBP which cost ~$3300 while a very good specced Windows laptop is ~$1,500-2,000.
I know lots of Windows people similarly wanting to try a Mac laptop but, again, the software they use are Only Windows based and Apple's high prices are ridiculous!

Let's accept the differences and let the Windows vs Mac war end as it appears to be continuing.
Each system has its pros and cons. To each their own!

.... why would Microsoft hitch their wagon to a company that hasn't delivered great performance. I wonder how old this agreement is, I wonder if it predates Windows RT
Qualcomm did make a “custom” version of its chip for the Surface Pro X. Perhaps it had something to do with the exclusivity. Also, Qualcomm probably wanted some assurance that Microsoft wouldn’t immediately undercut its own efforts to market ARM chips for Windows.

If Nvidia buys ARM it could get worse for Windows ARM on a Mac.

APPLE should have bought ARM.

Still think they should have bought Adobe. fine tuned the software and made some programs Mac only.

As much as I would love apple to buy ARM, If they did any big tech company as well as governments would scrutinize apple as well as bring up antitrust issues which is exactly what is happening to NVIDIA. Apple was wise not to buy ARM because of the issues others and governments have with NVIDIA over its acquisition of ARM and they saw that coming especially with apple being apple

What happened to Fusion? I really used Fusion a lot years ago with the business I ran. I once set up an entire client/server network on a MacBook Pro for a client to demo software. It really worked pretty well, surprising me.

There has been a lot a foul play with Microsoft software running on apple products this year
edge was incredible on the macbook air and ipad until 15.0 ios release along with dumb update app on Mojave that cripples the program.
i dont blame or credit either company anymore.

Hahah! Good luck! Windows will be releasing in Mac in the future soon.

Not so much of a secret anymore.

There was a time Microsoft saved Apple. There will be a time Apple will be saving Microsoft :)

People will laugh, but don't be too sure this is wrong. Apple could end up a Microsoft savior at some point. The industry is pretty crazy, and a lot can happen...

EDIT: Remember the exclusivity deal with AT&T that almost killed the iPhone?

I've considered getting Parallels. But since only ARM-optimized apps run natively in the ARM version of Windows, that means that any other x86 app (such as the majority of games) would be running in a Windows emulation mode while in Parallels' emulation mode. I suspect that wouldn't make for too fantastic of an experience.
For productivity apps it works surprisingly well. I even tried an old x86 Intel copy of Adobe Acrobat 10 that came with a scanner that I bought years ago - and it runs pretty good given that it is running via emulation in a VM. These M1's are pretty slick.

I doubt gaming would work all that well. MaxTech has a few videos about this and some games do get decent FPS. I just don't know why people would buy these machines for gaming when Xbox, PS and Switch can be bought for not much with a vastly superior experience.

little more involved than that
most switchers were upset over a faulty typing experience form one company
or hacked system for another for them switching because they still need to use a computer.

nope
might be a reason, but its not the reason
MS has become data collection company lately, and worst than google on it. why do you think win11 doesnt work without a MS account? they don't want you to use some apps as secondary OS on a mac. now money made that way. they want you to use this as your primary OS, collect data, sell ads and so on.
I have 2 machines set up without Microsoft accounts. They just don't make it blatantly obvious how to.

It works fine for older titles, but nothing that stresses the graphics at all. Think more Neverwinter Nights than Dragon Age Inquisition.

This is why the delusion that "new" means "better" is just that... a delusion. New can be better. But not by default.

?

Apple market cap: approx. $2.64 trillion
Microsoft market cap: approx. $2.55 trillion

Most of Apple's revenue and profit still comes from the iPhone.

Microsoft has diversified away from Windows (used to be one of the main drivers of sales and profit)
