Obviously a controlled leak, however, if Apple is doing this to see our opinions, then here goes!

Well. The iPhone shown in the leak is obviously very similar in terms of main aspects, like the home button, lock/on/off button. They added a bit of the aluminium design into it, with a bit of the 3g iPhone added. It genuinely looks like they've merged the 3g and the 1st generation iPhone together, and given it a flat back with square edges.

The screen looks nicer in size, but the bezel does look a lot thinner, maybe triggering unwanted gestures/touches.

From an OS point of view. Meh. It's getting old. What many companies have done is taken their idea, and made it (supposedly) better. Everyones taken the icon ideas, the gestures, the App Store. Obviously, they have the only touch that makes it Apple, and thats innovation, but we've been using the same thing for ages now, and maybe a slight GUI, and UI upgrade is needed.

Sorry to ramble on, but it's just my opinion :D :apple:

Apart from that. It looks pretty good :)

Controlled Leak.

Apple is seeing how future and current iPhone users react to the design of the phone and the specifications of it.

This is really about the iPhone "design" and if we accept this new shift.

We already know the technical specifications of the device were going to be great after seeing the iPhone OS 4 event.

I personally like the photos that gizmodo took of the device and after looking at it enough (if that is the design) I think it's a winner. If this isn't the design, then expect a iPhone that looks like the 3G iPad.

Right. Because steve jobs wanted everyone to stop buying this generation iPhone for the next few months now that we know for sure the next generation is far better.

Oh, wait...

You have to realize that nothing other than print and surface finish (e.g. painted or black anodized aluminum, text and button symbols etc) can change at this point. Or actually not even this point, it would have to have changed a few weeks ago.

Yeah, but who's to say the photos we have are of the most recent version?

If they change the seams, screws, and buttons then they could still keep testing the old ones in the wild. Maybe this guy lost a "November '09" prototype. It's changed since then, but since they aren't changes that alter how the phone works he was told to keep testing his model.

It's started growing on me, but I don't really like the design, it could have been much better, losing the tapered edges makes it more brick like too.

Can people please stop calling it the 4G. It wont be 4G. It will be the 4th iPhone
Why not? 4G networks have already been launched in Europe months ago. AT&T were reportedly looking into it last year. Not sure about Japan, but they don't like to trail behind Europe so I'm guessing they have it too.

Apple wants to be ahead of the bunch, they can't do another embarrassing "well, the US is a little behind and we're US based so the rest of you will just have to wait a year until we catch up", like they did when they A) released the original iPhone without 3G capabilities, B) actually named the next one "3G" as if it was new and revolutionary (sort of like Ford releasing a new car model called "Ford Gasoline" because it runs on this new fangled liquid fuel).

It has to be 4G or it will be received with a collective eye roll by the international market.

I am just thinking....has Apple deliberately "lost" their precious to see how well public reaction will be to this?...or maybe some another commercial game are we involved in?

Yes. 4G also means 4th Gen. That's how many distinguishes the different iPod versions so it's no different than the iPhone ;)

Don't know what the hype is all about. My first impression of the devise was a Chinese knockoff as well. Anyone ever remember the knockoff 1st gen iPod Nano? reminds me of the same way construction wise with the screws etc.

So apple were the first to do:

touch screen phones?
smartphones?
application stores?
icons?
copy paste?
all the things they stole of nokia?

With the great subsidies we enjoy I hardly think the phone needs to be 4G in order to be a success in Europe. It's not like there are ton of other 4G phones out on the market right now. So a faster processor, bigger storage, front facing camera, higher mega-pixel camera with Flash should be enough to lure in new users and others to upgrade. Apple can afford to drag their feet and wait for American carriers to catch up.

We are victim of the most successful viral marketing campaign ever.
It'll be great when we'll discover a completely different iPhone next June.

How many successful app stores where there before Apple came along with theirs? You could even make the same case for touch screens, they were hardly the defacto standard until Apple made them become an object of desire.

I really think that the real iphone is going to be different, if you look at all Apple products then they are all alu. And why would apple use micro sim when whole world uses normal simcard??

And this design is very unapple... 2 months and 2 days left.

The iphone 3G was out YEARS after 3G networks were released. So much for apple being ahead? I would bet my house on the next iPhone not having 4G

Wow... this whole fiasco is VERY interesting.
This whole 4th gen iPhone thing is very un-Appleish.
Either Steve Jobs is at home laughing his butt off at how stupid people are and waiting to unveil the real iphone, or he is at home loosing his mind and firing half the iphone department

All of these have been running through my head. I can't believe it. If this is all true, and these iPhones are, in essence, the real deal, I actually feel for Steve for the first time. I also feel for the dozens if not hundreds that will feel his wrath, and the countless that will be (or have been) 'let go' from Apple.

On the other hand, if this is all fake hype, and these are controlled leaks, these are the best that I have ever seen in my life, and I know the company that I want to work for. If this is all on purpose, this is the grandest leak scheme that there ever was, ever is, and ever will be... Until iPhone 5. :)

Yeah, but who's to say the photos we have are of the most recent version?

So he's field testing an old version? Doesn't sound very apple like.

If they change the seams, screws, and buttons then they could still keep testing the old ones in the wild. Maybe this guy lost a "November '09" prototype. It's changed since then, but since they aren't changes that alter how the phone works he was told to keep testing his model.

I don't know why everyone is talking about the screws. Have you guys ever taken apart the 3G or 3GS, they all have screws in that exact spot.

Also, coming from an R&D background, if you're field testing a "prototype" 8 weeks before its announcement (and possible release), you DFU'd. Plus I doubt they are going to change the design. The only route they could go without having to re-size internal components (PCB and such) is by making it bigger. Otherwise, we're waiting another year. Apple is a fine company, and I love my iPhone, but they're is no way they are going to make a whole new iPhone because of this. A redesign this far out is impossible. Also, I doubt they would have him field testing something they don't plan on ever manufacturing.

I wonder if when Steve introduces this, he will be like "Some of you might have already seen this on the web...haha..its....funny." That is what happened with the iMac keyboard.

This has to be the strangest move from apple for a long time if it really was a "controlled leak". It more than likely probably was because I really doubt Apple would actually let engineer's off campus with new products if they were actually going to be a new product.

The phone is going to a unibody. Just. Like. Everything. Else. Apple. Has. Made. In. The. Last. Two. Years.

Compared to the 3g and 3gs that design is but ugly and looks like something that HTC would do..

Apple is more than likely gauging how much the forward facing camera is worth it to the consumer. Since this would add cost and a host of other issues. That being said. If i could use this phone as a video conference and then my iPad for everything is becomes good for me. This is more than likely why the iPad didn't have a camera. Why sell you one device when i can sell you two.
