of course there’s no iPad Instagram app; there’s no budget for it! Right now Meta is going 110% in on giving us those virtual legs they promised us.

Apple should form a new policy that if you have more than 1 million monthly active users or more than $1 million monthly revenues you have to provide a native iPad app.

Anyone knows what the frame on the wall is on the 1st picture?

We had someone who worked at Instagram work with us now (under NDA) and apparently had intimate knowledge of the whole thing. Apparently Meta believes that if more people use Instagram on iPad, then they are likely to form habits that see them become passive and post a lot less. This then makes Instagram a content consumption app rather than a consumption AND creation app. Therefore users aren’t as engaged and hooked on the platform as Meta would like. Having it on mobile only to them means that users would be more likely to post, get attention and then keep posting. That was literally the reason.

I hate TikTok but hey at least they give their users options. And if Instagram is focusing so much on Reels, they should think about an iPad app with consumer grade editing features. Apple was marketing the Air as a TikTok video maker.

I’ve been just using Instagram on iPhone and iPad without the app for quite some time—just in the browser: likes, messages, replies, etc.
I’d love for those saying it’s “unusable” to elaborate.
Not sticking up for Meta, I honestly can’t stand them, but seriously how is it completely “unusable?”
To answer your question to why I’ve been using it without the app: I don’t trust the app being installed on my phone. Hoping that they can’t harvest as much data from me through safari as they can with the full fledged app.

Hello I'm Phil, the person who actually sent this in.
I just wanted to highlight why this is an issue for me, and a general comment about the use of social media.
I like so many other people run a small business, I use Shopify for my store and then social media as my main connection with customers and potential customers. Instagram is a great way to show and talk to people that really works for me as a business. The people I communicate with have over time actually become more that just a follower number, you could say I don't use 'social', on a personal level, but I love what I do as a daily job so my main business account is kind of my personal account.
I have an iPhone, but that's just an SE2 (I don't really want a larger phone, and I don't actually use it that much). I have an iPad for all my main daily jobs and an iMac for my work.
I like the real estate that using an iPad for instagram gives, it's just so much easier. Though they still need to sort the text box UI. Ha.
So anyway, the general use of social media for some people, like myself running a small business is really important, and not being able to use instagram on an M1 iPad because of these issues is a right pain, and something I never thought would be an issue when I upgrade my iPad. The thing is, will this be fixed? Is it an apple ios16 thing, a meta/ instagram UI thing. They don't really care about the iPad, so probably won't even do anything if it is?

I rated Instagram 1 star today because it’s annoying that when I go to use Instagram on the iPad mini it’s just a blown up iPhone app.

Whatever, stops me from obsessively scrolling I guess.

I've used an iPad as my primary device for nearly a year, and just learned from this article that Instagram doesn't work properly. I'm sure instagram is important to somebody.... but not to me.

Who cares about Instagram? It’s almost 2023. Facebook is a doomsday device and should be ignored until it dies a painful death.
Instagram is great for what I use it for; which is primarily dog, comedy, and hobby-related content. It's easy for IG to be pleasant so if you are having a bad experience on IG, that's your fault. While I would like to have it support split-screen or stage manager, it really doesn't bother me to use it full screen.
