New York needs to get on board. Plenty of times I’ve driven without realizing I left my wallet home.
OK, imagine I am reading with the intent to understand and not to argue. What would that look like? What can I say that would allay your fears about this technology? And where is the problem with this technology? You talk about kids figuring out things on your phone, okay but have you ever heard of kids hacking your phone through NFC? We're talking about NFC information exchange, we're not talking about you handing your phone unlocked to your kids and they do stuff to it.You should try reading with the intent to understand instead of argue. I stated as much in my post. I would never hand over my phone. On the other hand, if you’ve got kids, perhaps you’ve seen that they can figure out all sorts of methods of accessing at least parts of your phone’s data. Also, how about the more than a few people who don’t pick their phones? You don’t want to see any scenario where your privacy might be compromised; intentionally or by accident. Good for you. I don’t live in that world.
Click bait.Lets fix the headline these two states allow it almost a year later with radio silence from the rest of the country.
I got excited for nothing. Must be a boring Friday.
Just like when paying with ApplePay or any other digital wallet ypu can show cards amd authenticate for wallet from lockscreen without unlocking your phone. Was very excited about this at first but then read a hypothetical realistic scenario someone described.
The cops could get all friendly and say “My handheld scanner doesn’t seem to be working. Would you mind handing over your phone? I’ll just quickly scan on my in-car scanner. Can you please also unlock it so I don’t lose the app? Otherwise I need to file some report for missing documents and we’d need to get a hearing etc. Instead, if you just give me the phone, we’d be done in 5 mins.”
Of course everyone thinks they are not gullible but cops do this for a living. They can word it much better to make it sound convincing.
That's what lock down mode is for. It disables biometrics/USB and forces unlock via password.OK, imagine I am reading with the intent to understand and not to argue. What would that look like? I don't see a scenario where this technology is going to compromise your privacy. People have said "oh I don't want to hand my phone to a cop." Well you don't hand your phone over. If you have ever used Apple Pay, you would already know what this is like. You tap your phone and you are authenticated to your phone (FaceID).
Now, could a cop trick you, like someone says early on in the thread, sure. Cops trick people all the time. They don't need this to trick people, that's for sure. They can ask for your phone today and you can hand it over and therefore you consent to a search, today, no ID needed.
MacRumors isn't going to hear you if you don't tag them. Do you really think they read every comment on every article?MacRumors please a do meaningful follow on this story. Utah seems like it has been testing FOREVER! This whole thing seems to be Apple vapor ware at this point.
MR did run a story a few days ago about California’s plans.MacRumors please a do meaningful follow on this story. Utah seems like it has been testing FOREVER! This whole thing seems to be Apple vapor ware at this point.
California just started a pilot program. It provides for a digital ID but it is only accessible via CA DMV Wallet app (not the Apple wallet). That's what I was thinking! You would think Cali would be the FIRST to signup but Nooooooo hhhhh
AWESOME ! THANKS!California just started a pilot program. It provides for a digital ID but it is only accessible via CA DMV Wallet app (not the Apple wallet).
This is/was the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) web site: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/ca-dmv-wallet/
I wonder if that app will allow you to present the ID without unlocking your phone. That is the big advantage of integrating with Apple Wallet where you can present your ID without giving anyone access to your phone.California just started a pilot program. Unfortunately, it appears I have unlock my phone to access the digital ID from the CA DMV Wallet appI wonder if that app will allow you to present the ID without unlocking your phone. The ID in the CA DMV Wallet app provides a scan code for TSA , a separate page readable ID with your Drivers License photo (for people and law enforcement) and an optional verification that you over 21 (So you buy alcohol and/or weed)Is there anything that exists for when you’re pulled over by the cops?
I know this whole thing currently is for presenting your I.D. at an airport but I’m more concerned with police instead of airport stuff.
That’s sad. It’s nice to know CA is “working on it”, but coding their own App from scratch means it’ll take another decade before it actually works. 🙁Here's what CA is doing now... no Apple wallet support (yet?) But it's something and apparently accepted at a fair number of Airports

CA DMV Wallet
Now live in Pilot Phase – California DMV Mobile Wallet Californians now have a secure way to present their driver’s license or identification card using their smartphones via a Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) digital credential. What a joke. The so called "cradle of Tech" State has the most asinine process to add your DL and once added, it does not live in your wallet but in the CA DMV app. Also make sure you change your phone to default text size before you start the process. Here's what CA is doing now... no Apple wallet support (yet?) Without a doubt, it could be better and it should push to the Apple Wallet..What a joke. Yeah but it will take agesNew York needs to get on board. Plenty of times I’ve driven without realizing I left my wallet home.
Yeah but it will take agesNY is so behind places like Cali on so many things.
In the mean time I just keep my Driver’s License permanantly stored in the glove compartment of my car in a pouch with the registration.
When I know I need to show an ID I bring my passport along. It works out well for the most part, because even if an unexpected case arises where I am asked for ID I can usually just go get it from the car. If I happen to be taking public transport (eg. Drive to train station and take train into city, or drive to a ferry), I can always bring my ID from the car (the key here is remembering). Finally, if I am not going to have my car, it is likely I have flown somewhere…in which case, I will have my passport!
But I still agree with you, the phone license would fix all this. This is just what I do in the meantime.
Hopefully the day will come when we can use virtual wallets absolutely everywhere because I hate carrying extra crap. Hopefully sooner than later.
Yeah i did this with a flat chipolo lolI ended up putting an Airtag in my wallet. That way I get notified if I leave it.
Well it just went out of BETA a day or so ago. Give it some time.Update:
Well I got the California digitalID and had the opportunity to use it the week before Labor Day with the TSA at LAX in Terminal 5 in Los Angeles.
Basically a total failure 😨 . They would not recognize it nor would they accept it. They still required a physical government issued photo ID (typically a driver license or a passport).
