On the one hand, we've got people who seem to buy a new iPhone every year and will never face obsolescence. On the other, we've got people who rarely switch phones because Apple gives them upgrades longer than any other company would dare. They face obsolescence too often. If we haven't acclimated ourselves to this by now, we might never.

I'm surprised that the iPhone X, with its huge price difference, didn't make the cut but its processing power isn't as strong as we'd like to believe.

I'm ok with not have these "features" doesn't seem compelling for me. Remember everyone is different. For some they must have these features. For others like me I don't need it. I have iPhone X that simply won't die. LOL
My wife has my old iPhone X. Needs a new battery. But I look forward to showing off that I have bouncy rain drops in the weather app and she can’t have them.

It is 3.2 GB update. Screw it. I’m getting the 13 on Friday. Not wasting my valuable screen time while working, not for this mega-update.

Not supporting the globe in maps is one of the stranger ones for sure. It shouldn't require that much processing power to render a globe; Google has been doing it for years.

Also, the requirement for newer hardware is even more stringent on Macs; with Monterey the 2019 iMac I'm using can't do the globe, and I'm certain it has more processing power than an iPhone XS.

Difference between iPhone X and XS/XR, this I'm sure is the reason/excuse:

Some are borderline but clearly these don't require new hardware and are artificially gimped.

  • An interactive 3D globe of Earth in the Maps app.
  • More detailed maps in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London in the Maps app.
  • The ability to swipe up or down while taking a QuickTake video to zoom in or out.
  • New animated backgrounds in the Weather app that more accurately represent the sun position, clouds, and precipitation.
Just don’t upgrade…

Bs cant copy paste text in photos
Some comments just make your head hurt. This feature recognizes text in pictures and converts it to text which can be. It’s nifty, well publicized and rather computationally intense, hence why you can’t die it on older devices, like mine, sadly

Rest? More like you're left with placebo version number change.
So, you’re losing features that you had with ios14??? I don’t think so… no-one forces you to upgrade if you don’t like it… Apple even said they continue to support ios14…

They’re telling you to buy a new iPhone.
As many others have said, these are minor features, and most can be justified by the poor machine learning capabilities of A11 and older. If apple wanted force you to upgrade, they would have removed major features. You can easily continue to use the X without any big compromise

Well, can see you don’t support the false narrative. Well said

Not quite. Apple never commercialized these features when selling the X. In fact, Apple gives you each year new features, so it’s normal that at some point your hardware can’t support future features that are developed for more powerful iphones. This is not obsolescence, because you can still uses your iphone x exactly as when you bought it in the first place (with many new features)
Tim called and says he already pays Joz tens of millions of dollars to defend the indefensible.

Out of all of that, I'm just really annoyed about not having the offline dictation/Siri and the live text from photos. I can understand the latter, just sucks. But the former? Damn it all, I was really looking forward to that... and I swear when I tried it in airplane mode it works. Bah, humbug.

You are right, your android is better, thanks for sharing

You're probably right Android is better than iPadOS 15 on my supported iPad Pro M1 which is updating right now. Let's see if iPadOS 15 address these issues:

- Lack of GPS on WIFI model
- Background multitasking
- DeX
- File Apps
- Gimping 3rd party browsers forcing them to use Webkit rendering engine instead of their own Chrome Blink, Firefox Gecko, etc. engines
- Lack of freedom and not being able to install apps like Retroarch, YouTube Vance, etc.
- No native calculator app
