A. 5 years old.
B. Not getting every feature doesn’t make something obsolete.

I must say... my iPhone SE 2017 got more features now than when I bought it years ago. The one I use a lot for a while now is Shortcuts: making the Phone do all the daily boring consecutive tasks and commands with just one touch or even automatically. On the Mac you could already could do stuff like that. So for me the SE is not obsolete at all.

All other new things in iOS15... not worth an new iPhone yet. Maybe next year, hopefully, Apple releases an iPhone 14 Mini with Touch ID.

In other words, don't install it as it will make the device slower if it's anything older than iPhone XS/XR.

Understandable for some of the features. But please explain to me how a simple animation in the weather app is too much for iPhone X?

The ability to add home, hotel, and car keys to the Wallet app.
Actually, that probably only applies to home and car keys.

From Apple's footnote on its iOS 15 Features page:

Car keys and home keys are available on iPhone Xs and later. Device requirements may vary by hotel and workplace.

This makes sense when you think about it. The keys limitations are the one thing on that list that has nothing to do with the A12 Bionic chip requirements. While I don't think Apple has specifically said why this limitation exists, I suspect it's because only the iPhone XS/XR and later offer the ability to use an NFC card after the battery is dead (the capability that was originally introduced for Express Transit).

It's easy to see why Apple wouldn't want to risk people storing their house and car keys in their iPhone, only to be locked out because of a dead battery.

On the other hand, office and hotel keys are far less critical. You can always visit the front desk at a hotel if your iPhone won't unlock your room, and most workplaces that are large enough to offer support for digital keys on your iPhone will likely also have a building security group that offers a similar option if an employee finds themselves stuck.

Still, as Apple notes, it will be up to each company to decide what requirements they want to set, so workplaces that don't want to deal with employees being locked out by dead batteries can simply follow Apple's home and car key lead.

Apple probably tested the animation and if it had any issues they won’t release it for that iPhone. It could’ve been something like a stutter and they just decided no it’s not working correctly so it’s not going on that iPhone. I mean if you’re insisting to have the latest and greatest features that’s going to require the latest and greatest hardware 🤷‍♂️

I never really understood the point of jailbreaking. Maybe back in the day it enabled some basic features but I think it comes with too many security risks today. I mean if you want uber level customization then that option is already out there in the form of android. I think that’s why jailbreaking is so rare now. Of course to each his own so if it works for you then that’s great.

They’re telling you to buy a new iPhone.
They might but I won't 😀. My X's still going strong. Like someone above said, it seems never die. Rocking iOS 15 it's still plenty fast.
Reading a book and Reading Focus kicks in. Fabulous.

I have a 6s Plus. After I installed iOS 15, I did notice some slowness in web browsing, but I also switched from Chrome to Safari because of all the warnings about lax security in Chrome these days. So ... I'm not sure if the slowness is because of the iOS update or the switch to the new "super-secure" Safari. I also noticed higher power consumption after the iOS update. WTF ... it's a six-year-old phone, which still works as a phone and a text device, and I can't really afford to buy a new one right now. Maybe next year, when the 6s Plus (probably) won't be supported by iOS 16 ...

Seriously? A weather animation is too heavy to run on an A11 Bionic chip?

I can't possibly think it is. I have the 8 and it is not a slouch in any form whatsoever where UI and other aspects are concerned, with respect to the hardware it comes with. No way the animations are too heavy for the A11.

Apple released iOS 15 today following over three months of beta testing, but not all of the new features are available on older iPhones.

According to the iOS 15 features page on Apple's website, the following features require an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, which means the features listed below aren't available on the iPhone X or any older models.

You'll need an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or newer for these iOS 15 features:
  • Portrait mode in FaceTime, which blurs your background and puts the focus on you.
  • Spatial audio in FaceTime, which makes voices sound like they're coming from the direction in which the people are positioned on the call.
  • Voice Isolation mode in FaceTime, which uses machine learning to block out ambient noises like a leaf blower outside or a dog barking in the next room during calls.
  • Wide Spectrum mode in FaceTime, which amplifies ambient noises during calls.
  • An interactive 3D globe of Earth in the Maps app.
  • Immersive walking directions with step-by-step directions shown in augmented reality in the Maps app.
  • More detailed maps in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London in the Maps app.
  • Live Text for copying and pasting, looking up, or translating text within photos.
  • On-device speech processing of Siri requests.
  • The ability to make Siri requests offline without an internet connection for timers, alarms, phone calls, messaging, sharing, launching apps, controlling audio playback, and opening settings.
  • The ability to swipe up or down while taking a QuickTake video to zoom in or out.
  • The ability to add home, hotel, and car keys to the Wallet app.
  • On-device keyboard dictation that performs all processing completely offline.
  • Continuous keyboard dictation, rather than a limit of 60 seconds per instance.
  • New animated backgrounds in the Weather app that more accurately represent the sun position, clouds, and precipitation.
Apple does not indicate why these features require an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, but at least some of the limitations likely relate to the need for Apple's second-generation Neural Engine or newer for optimal performance.

iOS 15 is compatible with all devices that can run iOS 14, including older devices like the original iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s.

Graat article!
It would be great to have the same for iOS 16 and iPhone X and lower models
