You're probably right Android is better than iPadOS 15 on my supported iPad Pro M1 which is updating right now. Let's see if iPadOS 15 address these issues:

- Lack of GPS on WIFI model
- Background multitasking
- DeX
- File Apps
- Gimping 3rd party browsers forcing them to use Webkit rendering engine instead of their own Chrome Blink, Firefox Gecko, etc. engines
- Lack of freedom and not being able to install apps like Retroarch, YouTube Vance, etc.
- No native calculator app
and you were totally blindsided that these "issues" existed when you bought that M1 iPad Pro? Did Apple promise you at the time of purchase they would fix those "issues"?

I don’t know why Portrait mode is not available on iPhone X, it’s probably the processor.
oh, this is so easy: "
  • Portrait mode in FaceTime, which blurs your background and puts the focus on you."
Snap! Probably the blurred background which does use the ML,

Interesting, and consistent- a lot of these seem similar to the limitations on MacOS between the M1 and Intel macs, which makes sense.

I think ATP explained this well. These features were written to take advantage of the new chip goods (machine learning, neural engine, etc.). It’s GOOD that apple is writing to take advantage of the new tech. But, its not like they flipped a switch to take these features out of older phones/macs, its that it wasn’t worth it to rewrite these features in a way that could work on older phones.

Put another way, sure, any of the older phones could render a globe, but is it worth it to have apple re-write that code that doesn’t rely on newer tech to make it work on older phones? I’d agree that’s a good balance of resources.

Apple released iOS 15 today following over three months of beta testing, but not all of the new features are available on older iPhones.

According to the iOS 15 features page on Apple's website, the following features require an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, which means the features listed below aren't available on the iPhone X or any older models.

You'll need an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or newer for these iOS 15 features:
  • Portrait mode in FaceTime, which blurs your background and puts the focus on you.
  • Spatial audio in FaceTime, which makes voices sound like they're coming from the direction in which the people are positioned on the call.
  • Voice Isolation mode in FaceTime, which uses machine learning to block out ambient noises like a leaf blower outside or a dog barking in the next room during calls.
  • Wide Spectrum mode in FaceTime, which amplifies ambient noises during calls.
  • An interactive 3D globe of Earth in the Maps app.
  • Immersive walking directions with step-by-step directions shown in augmented reality in the Maps app.
  • More detailed maps in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London in the Maps app.
  • Live Text for copying and pasting, looking up, or translating text within photos.
  • On-device speech processing of Siri requests.
  • The ability to make Siri requests offline without an internet connection for timers, alarms, phone calls, messaging, sharing, launching apps, controlling audio playback, and opening settings.
  • The ability to swipe up or down while taking a QuickTake video to zoom in or out.
  • The ability to add home, hotel, and car keys to the Wallet app.
  • On-device keyboard dictation that performs all processing completely offline.
  • Continuous keyboard dictation, rather than a limit of 60 seconds per instance.
  • New animated backgrounds in the Weather app that more accurately represent the sun position, clouds, and precipitation.
Apple does not indicate why these features require an iPhone with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, but at least some of the limitations likely relate to the need for Apple's second-generation Neural Engine or newer for optimal performance.

iOS 15 is compatible with all devices that can run iOS 14, including older devices like the original iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s.

offline Siri and dictation. The one reason I can’t wait to upgrade to iOS15

Apple is not obligated to even offer a minor or major OS upgrade for your device. Apple created the free update model, as prior to the iPhone what you bought was what you were stuck with. That is planned obsolescence. What you want is free for the life of the phone.

The X is still a perfectly capable phone. Some of these feel intentional. 6S I can see.. but X? Not buying this one.
Maybe you could check the specs and see what is missing. I believe as a lot of people have said is the ML engine was upgraded a lot after the X. Yep, that would do it.

And all these "issues" cause him to want a ridiculously slower, less capable device. He got you on that one, LOL

right..ok so when you wake up in the morning and your phone doesn't do all those things, will it actually matter to your life? Few of those features are needed or even useful!

Some are borderline but clearly these don't require new hardware and are artificially gimped.

The ability to swipe up or down while taking a QuickTake video to zoom in or out.
This one is because the iPhone X and earlier don't have QuickTake video. In iOS 13 it was exclusive to the iPhone 11 and then it was added to the older XS and XR in iOS 14. I don't know if it's that demanding but that's what they did for whatever reason.

Funny how even over the last few years, I haven't thought of the iPhone X as an "old" phone, but given the laundry list of features that are now not supported, it's a good thing I was planning on upgrading from my current X anyway. Wife will get my X (she's currently on a 6S Plus), as she generally doesn't pine for or need the newer stuff as much as I do. Two upgrades for the price of one...been doing this for years now. ;)

Sadly, I think my iPhone 12 is gonna miss out on ALL of the features, due to a lack of desire to upgrade on its User's part.

I'm pretty sure the first iteration of Apple Maps used to zoom out to a globe, because I remember that I was disappointed when I noticed that it had gone away.

that’s most of the new features then. But to be fair it’s pretty decent Apple are still supporting devices from 2017 (and even earlier)

good luck getting an android which has even half that amount of support

So basically everything new in ios15?
How is an iphone x support ios15 since it misses everything new?!

Seems like most of these needed the more powerful neural engine of the A12 or newer (the neural engine in the A11 is pretty basic and is basically only for FaceID) to run smoothly. A few do seem a little arbitrary though.

For the QuickTake one, the way the article words it makes it sound like a limitation, when it really isn’t. QuickTake itself is only compatible with the XR/XS and newer. The swipe up works with every phone that has QuickTake.

still on the X. riding it out one more year for a better iphone upgrade over the 13 plus more 5g coverage by then. besides my X runs fine anyway

I'm on a iPhone X and the mentioned new things I will not have access to are just fine. As how would I miss anything I never had anyway? I do not see the point in upgrading a 3-4 year old phone there works just fine. -I guess I'll get the same emails and text messages on my "o'l x" as on a 13, and since I'm not a wannabe photography or movie maker I think I'll survive another few years. I am superstitious and 13 is not a good number :)

In general I think I'm just too busy in my life to be too caught up in phone stuff and what you can do on the phone.

Sometimes, quite often, I enjoy not having any disturbing devices with me. -and just be with the people there are around me at the moment and not somewhere else. I think it is called being presence with the people you are surrounded by....

X can only do portrait mode using the camera/still shots. Portrait mode in FaceTime apparently utilizes ML and the A12 and newer phones have much better neural engines.. That's ok, sounds like a feature I most likely would never use like Memoji's..
