Nobody here has A SINGLE CONCRETE CLUE as to what might be coming or when.

there is one clue. the buyers guide. and it says:
Product MacBook Pro
Recommendation: Don't Buy - Updates soon

ok so it's not concrete but it's informed

i say it wont matter too much but you already wait so waiting one month wont be too big a deal.

so one vote for wait. oh and never buy ram from apple. use newegg or owc.

I say wait to.. I been looking at Mac for a while and love the MBP but rather wait and pay basically the same amount of money for a newer version in the next month or so. But that is a personal opinion from my prospective. I think if you got one now you would always be thinking you wish had waited just one more month to buy/see what all would be in the new version and potentially have bought that. Consider if you buy now your buying a model that will be considered last years model in the next month or so. Just my .02 for what it matters. Its your money though and the current model is great so not like your buying piece of crap though. Good luck with your decision.

Buy!

Ok, guys, let me make this VERY EASY:

VOTE!!!

BUY NOW: 0 Votes
WAIT: 0 Votes

First counter to hit 25 wins!!

Thanks for all the help guys!

But yeah, I'm def. getting a macbook pro, screw what my friends say--since you guys are actual users, and you seem happy with your purchase, I'll take your word higher ;)

I am biased I'd say BUY!
But that's because two months ago people told me to wait and yet I went ahead and bought my MBP 15" anyway and up to now I do not regret it a second......

unless the new MBP's have extraordinary new features (quad core chips or more of the like )I probably won't either...:D

No offense to arn, I love the Buyer's Guides. However, they're just as "informed" as we are. They are simply a place to go and see what the time-table as been for past updates. Heck, look at the Mini and the ACDs! They're more than twice past their "average" update time.

And yet, still, people say: Don't buy it! The buyer's guide says the ACDs are going to be updated soon!

They've been saying it for months. Sometimes, things don't always stick to a strict schedule.

Buy if you need it. I love mine! :D

ok, answer this: is this infamous October 14th date legit, or some fanboy made up date to excite people?!

Is there a legit document or proof that the new macbook line-up IS in fact in production, and will be released soon?

You have to understand you are posting on a site where most of the people here have a sickness...we're gadget whores  who have to have the latest and greatest and we spend all day wondering and contemplating what if, what if, what if ... my sweet little pretty

You know what, your insight is correct, the next MBP will not be that different than the current in terms of capability and the price will not be that different either. Buy now and enjoy.

i myself want a macbook pro. but i am waiting. some people are saying the updates are going to be huge. and some people are saying they aren't. I, personally, am willing to wait the extra 2-3 weeks on the chance that the updates are going to be huge, but also mainly because there's a chance that the updated macbook pro's may be cheaper as well.

and for those of you who are saying "not gonna happen. nuh uh, not gonna happen", you guys don't know for sure what apple has planned. none of us do:p

but vader, if you absolutely need to have one now, buy it now.

Thats no clue. Its called an opinion, and no better than anyone on here I might ad. Its based on history of updates and we're already LONG overdue. How long has that "wait" been up there, since June? July? Aug? Its almost October for cripes sakes and we could be looking at Jan EASILY.

Buy. If its not out on the 30th I'm buying now.

Thats terrible advice for someone who's already said they don't care if the new version is better (duh) and that they have WORK that needs to be done on it. Who cares, you can wait for a month and get your update....and then all of a sudden in January or Feb they do an OVERHAUL and its way better and you're kicking yourself for not waiting for that one. Or what happens if he takes your advice and waits and it doesn't come out in Oct? Then what, he just waited for nothing and could have been working on his project all this time. Your advice would be great for someone who has a working computer and finds the latest/greatest of upmost importance to them....then yes you should wait. The waiting game is a dangerous cycle to get stuck in, I've done it and don't like it one bit. Take it from experience its NEVER WORTH IT. The updates are usually only minor and not worth the stress and time you loose.

True enough but all signs point to this update NOT being huge. Especially if it comes in the next 2 or 3 weeks. It will be a speed bump for sure, higher HD capacity, possibly more RAM max, *maybe* cheaper but I doubt that, minor case design update perhaps...having done as much research as I possibly can, this next MBP will be the Montevina chipset and that will not be a huge update. What is going to be huge is Nehalem and quad-core isn't available right now for the laptops...educated guesses have that coming later in 2009. When the MBP goes quad look for a total overhaul of the machine, I'm putting my money on that being the huge upgrade.

This is all just my opinion, but I've done all the reading I possibly can and listened to everyone's opioned (both informed & ill-informed alike). As for when it might happen...no one knows, it could be a week or it could be 4 months. Keep in mind this has been going on all summer long w/ Apple refusing to budge. Last update was Feb...thats almost a year ago now and I don't think they've ever taken so long to update their Pro laptop, at least not very often.

Well, the Montevina chipset (aka Centrino2) does support 8GB of memory. So why wouldn't the MBP support 8GB?

In fact.. I believe the Santa Rosa chipset also supports 8GB but it's limited by software.

Yes, the chipset supports it and 4GB modules are now available. It seems like an obvious update. A 4GB maximum now seems a bit limiting on a pro machine if you are expecting it to last a while.

Whether it will be this time or next remains to be seen, but I would certainly wait and find out.

If you need one now, look into a certified Apple refurb MBP, and save approx. 30-35% of the price of brand new, and get full warranty. I did, and I'm completely satisfied. I saved $500, and I can't tell the difference between my machine and any other 6-months old MBP. Once out of the box, it's virtually the same. So, if you need it now, you can't go wrong with a refurb... and you'll be enjoying a great machine...

...but ......if you can wait...

..then you can find out what the update actually consists of, and still have the option of saving the $$ on the refurb at that time if the update is not worth the price difference.

Bottom line: The current versions, even the previous versions (mid-2007 SR MBP) will do great work for you for a long time to come.

I guess I could, but it helps having a decent one in my dorm, so I can use it for other hw, and when I don't feel like going to the labs. But, in any case, you're right, that's a possibility!

So maybe I'll wait a few days...or weeks, and see what happens...

The only reason I brought it up (waiting and using the school's computer labs) is because when was in school, I didn't like using the labs either. I thought they were crappy, slow, dirty, etc...every reason I could think of to buy a laptop. Anyway, what happened was, that even though I got my laptop, I would eventually find myself back in the labs anyway. Be it due to lack of my own copy of the software, or it being a meeting place for a group project, there were many reasons why i found myself in the labs. And you know what? It wasn't so bad. There were friends to keep me company, met some upperclassmen and gained some valuable insight, etc etc. Not to mention you'll be away from your living space = free from your multitudes of distractions.

Bottom line is the labs aren't as bad as you think, and If you think you can tough it out and wait a few weeks to see if Apple makes its move, then that would probably be the most sensible thing to do. After all, $3k is a lot of money, especially for a student, and the last thing you want is buyer's remorse.

actually it's a great clue. if the buyers guild show a recent up date, i will buy. if it's six months into it, i would probably wait unless i really needed it. sometimes it's longer and sometimes it's not. but the buyers guild also list rumors to info on manufactures (intel, foxcom) to allow the consumer to make their own educated guess. and for someone who knows nothing about apple it is a great tool.

3. I have never ever used a mac before, a lot of my friends are saying Mac's are no good, and they suck--so I ask you guys? Why Macbook Pro? Is it worth it? Am I simply just wasting money on this?

Don't listen to your friends. They are obviously unexperienced, misinformed Windows fanboys. Listen to the thousands and thousands of happy Mac users here.

I got my Macbook Pro just today and it has been the best thing ever. I have been using mac for a good couple of years and I dont really bother about the updates even though the updates are major. Because it's technology and it's always changing and if you want to get it, just get it dude. 0.2GHz or a new stylish casing doesn't matter that much, really. Well in my opinion.

Seriously, I had doubts as to whether I should get a mac or and windows based machine, specifically HP. I am also a hardcore programmer and I had to go with a virtual PC to support XP. Thank fu*king god I didn't choose HP. It's just the different feel with mac that you don't get with any other laptop/PC.

Well, if you into programming and into HD movies, probably 2GB should be sufficient but do not waste your money on getting RAM from apple. Just a waste of money. Get it from elsewhere and install it yourself.

I hope you'll love your new Macbook Pro as much as I do.

congrats! as a "switcher" it was a huge decision for me to make to buy a mbp, but i have not looked back since. it's a great machine!!!

Like others have said - if you want it or need now - just buy it. There will always be a better and cheaper computer out there.

I myself just ordered a MBP today - it's got everything I need so why wait! Sure new ones might be out soon with new features and all sorts but new features mean new bugs to be ironed out!

I just purchased the base MBP 2 weeks ago today. It seems inevitable that they'll release a speed bump or a new model between now and the end of the year, but I dont care, as i hope to use this computer for at least 3 years (length of applecare), and the small improvements in speed or changes in design will have no effect on my use of the computer. By the nature of the business, new models will almost certainly be incremental upgrades, rather than drastic revisions.

I bought the computer before the (purported) updates because:
-I like the existing MBP keyboard more than the chiclet keyboard, if they change it, i lose out.
-I really like the overall design and feature set of the existing MBP, so i figured i'd grab it now...

and less importantly:
-I wanted a free ipod (edu discount)

One final note - Apple does offer a 14 day return/exchange policy, as well as a 14 day price matching policy (if they drop prices)....so if you want to hedge your bets but dont want to wait, buy after Oct 1...

I bought my MacBook back in August when the updates were "only days away" and am perfectly happy with my awesome computer, free iPod Touch and Printer. If I would have waited for the alleged "only days away", I would still be without a computer, and a quarter into the first semester.

The choice is yours, but remember, if it isn't the 14th, it will definitely be the 28th. If not, than it will definitely be November 25th. Waiting is not good to get caught up in, life's too short ;)

Screw you friends? Now don't ever do that. Don't listen to people over the Internet over what your friends say.

I think you should buy now if you want a computer; if you can wait, you might as well wait forever.

It's always difficult to figure out when to buy and when to not. Personally, I don't need an upgrade right now, so I'm holding out for Nehalem in late??? 2009 (hopefully)

My MBP, the first versions sold, just crashed. UGH. I'm willing to wait another two+ weeks to see if new ones come out.

I think the only real reason to wait for the update is that the current models will be discounted, not by very much at all, but if $150 or so does it for you, then you might want to wait. Otherwise go for it.

I will not expect to find yourself free from the problems that PC users have. Like all other computer Macs are not always perfect. Don't get me wrong they are good, just not perfect.

Just always keep this site up and www.apple.com/support and you will be set.

If you can wait I would definitely hold off till at least the end of October before buying. Apple is very likely to release something here in less than a month and it might have some nice new features that you will regret not getting. When you're throwing down the cost of a MacBook Pro I'd personally kinda wanna have the latest and greatest instead of something that was released early last spring. Especially if they do a redesign on the MBP and it looks nicer than the current line. But even if there isn't much change the current MBP's will be discounted at places like Amazon.com and you will be able to save another $150-$200+.
