If you aren't in a great rush, if I were in your shoes I would wait until the release of the new one: you might as well see if it's worth it and you can sit back smugly knowing that you have the latest and greatest for at least the next 10 minutes! ;)

One thought for you though, whichever you decide, think about a machine from the Apple refurb store. I got mine there with a couple of 100 quid knocked off the price and it has been terrific. On reflection it's arguably better than just getting a new one as some poor sod has already found out where it was broken and had it fixed for you. And even if you choose the new one, I'd be surprised if you had to wait much longer beyond the release for them to turn up in the refurb store.

Many people are responding that you should wait so you can get the "latest and greatest." However, another option is to wait because the current model will likely be sold at a significant discount once the new version comes out.

I'd say October 14 is a "firm rumor." What does that mean? It's still a rumor and there's no hard evidence that it's right, but it seems like there are several different rumor lines that are pointing to that date for something substantial to happen.

Last Question!

OK, so say i go to the Apple store next Friday [Oct. 3rd] and I buy the Macbook Pro (the most current one that they have), now say on Oct. 14th the new Macbook Pro's are released. Will I be able to go back on the 14th and exchange or return the Macbook Pro I bought on the 3rd, for the new one released on the 14th?

Thanks!!

Yes, if you're willing to pay the 15% restocking fee on the old one. Don't forget, your apple care, if you purchase it won't transfer over to the new one.

[edit] applecare technically isn't transferrable from one device to another, but whatever you can work out with support is up to support (as pointed out by the post below). However, there's also the fact that you can return and get a full refund on Applecare within 30 days, so if you do exchange laptops, that is an option. My advice, don't get a protection plan until you need it, but before your 1st year is over, or after 90 days if you need that phone support.

Thats not true at all, all you have to do is phone Apple & have it transfered over to the new machine's ID & serial number. Takes a few minutes. AppleCare doesn't even kick in until the machine is a year old, why would they punish people who purchased it early? They don't because they want your money now not later.

would you mind explaining these "new features"?
other that a specs bump or some design changes, i dont really see that much difference based on the rumors ive seen so far.

i think that the current mbps are excellent! they run smoothly and are really great machines. it will not be a waste of money. but like others have said, the 667 will work, while the 800 will not. do not buy the ram from apple, because you can find cheaper elsewhere. yadda yadda. make sure to buy matching pairs of ram so that your machine can benefit the most..

and i'd say to go to your nearest apple store and really first try a mbp out for yourself. try and see if you like it before you buy it. i think that mac's are awesome. and after switching almost 2 months ago, i am completely convinced of it.

phew that was long (enough) :D

Hmm...

- Faster Processor
- Better Battery Life
- Complete Redesign from the ground up
- Glass, advanced multitouch trackpad
- 16:9 LED Display
- Better connectivity
- Possible Blu-Ray
- Much, Much, More.

Any one of these things alone would be reason enough to wait 2 weeks. Altogether, I see no reason to purchase now. I've waited a year for this update: surely you can wait a week or two. You may be glad when the laptop comes now, but once you see the new ones, you will be very disappointed you didn't wait.

Hi,

I've heard that usually they simply just bump the specs up slightly and maybe change the outer shell, and keep the price almost the same. So basically they might up the 2.4GHz to maybe a 2.5-2.8Ghz depending, and then perhaps the HDD to 320 possibly?

The only thing is I cannot wait too long! I'm fine waiting for 2.5 weeks at the MOST!! I HAVE to start on my Project in 2.5 weeks, so I will need it by then!!

Is there any date that hints to when it may be updated? Ball-park figure?

**) Another question: Is it worth paying like $15 more for RAM with lower timings [4-4-4-12 instead of CAS: 5]???

**) The biggest argument my friends make is price, and I almost agree!

Thanks guys!!

- October 14th is the day. You may even see the price go down, due to the economy.

so vader1990, with the official announcement for an oct14th event made, just wondering, what did you end up doing?
