Thunderbolt -> Gig Ethernet dongle

The Apple USB to ethernet adapter only does 100 Mbps which is terrible considering how long gigabit ethernet has been around.

I can see a $50-$80 Tbolt -> GigE dongle.

Such a shame, but it seems like Apple is making this less of a working mans machine, and more of a consumer oriented device.

Really? This again? How exactly? Yeah, it was much more a working man's when it had outdated and slow ports like USB 2 and FW800. Yes.

I wonder how many times we will read about "Apple abandoning the "Pro market" Citation: FCPX" in this thread?

What?

So you're going to be using all 3 USB ports, both Thunderbolt ports, the MagSafe port, the SD card slot and more at the same time?

Oh yeah - we're all Pro Users.

I wasn't saying that – it is enough to use the Magsafe, one USB and one Thunderbolt. Then you have three cables on two sides.
It is just uncomfortable when your MacBook is fixed like this. Have you ever used a current MacBook Air with external HDD on the left and Mobile Internet connected on the right? It feels a bit strange because you have to watch out on both sides.

And having the power button only on the keyboard instead of a real button is confusing if you are also using an iMac because you always miss the button you intended to press because they are moved one to the left.

Wow, this could be legit. Assuming there's a dedicated GPU in the mix, this is about perfect for my hopes. Dual Tbolt ports... USB 3... Retina... :D:D:D

Rather have a thicker case then no Gigabit Ethernet port.

Simple reason, a lot of companies refuse to allow Wi-Fi on internal networks, and using dongles not only add expense and mass, but you do loose performance every time you convert protocols.

Easy solution: Get an Airport Express, set it up in Bridge-Mode and use it.

What do you mean by 'you do loose performance every time you convert protocols'?
Definitely, you will not get full Gb Ethernet speed when using a USB 2.0 adapter, but if it was USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt, there's no loss to worry about.

...and the total discreditation of the "Pro" moniker is complete!

Dual thunderbolt (could even theoretically support dual external monitors without requiring daisy chaining) and the possibility for two standard SSD (instead of soldered on flash sticks) doesn't make this pro enough for you?

There are plenty of options to get wired connectivity if you want it. Check out the Belkin thunderbolt dock for example.

Firewire, Ethernet and some other junk. That's all we need, surely? There are economies of scale to think about for a company before simply releasing a product. They knew that TB chip prices would be going down once Apple exclusivity deal was finished and they knew that PC manufacturers would be including TB. More customers = more win for Belkin. Besides, the thing was unveiled at CES at the beginning of this year and they mentioned they were planning to start shipping in August / September 2012. I don't think they plucked those dates out of thin air.

There may have been an exclusivity dead for Apple and Sony during early development, but after Apple's announcement, it was apparent that TB was available to all to develop. Most sat on the sidelines.

I wonder if this many people fought about switching from the parallel port to usb, or from the ball mouse to laser lol. Change is inevitable no matter how much you don't like it. It is time to move forward.

OK then - for the case I may still consider switching to Apple and I not only am going to replace all my Adobe software to make things work - but may also replace my audio hardware while I'm at it - could you please direct me to fast and reliable high quality audio interfaces (audio and midi) that use USB3 or Thunderbolt? Thanks

Well, they need to remove the "Pro" from the name if they really are eliminating wired networking.

The other question is, will it be user upgradeable or will you have to pay $600 for 16GB of RAM and $200 to get a better drive?

I expect it will be not user upgradeable given Apples trends lately, but am hopeful.

Non-user upgradeable means back to the WAY faster PCs for me...

No optical drive.... welp. Guess I'm not buying one after all then :( If I wanted this I'd have bought the Air.

Will have to deal with not having a portable Mac for another year of university and just keep my Mac Mini.

Wow! So, how will i be able to plug in the thunderbolt cable AND the MacBook Pro Power adapter from the Thunderbolt display cable if the thunderbolt port is on the opposite side of the magsafe connector?

The person doing this mockup has never heard of the Thunderbolt Display, OR Apple dropped the ball!!!

power adapter on the left and thunderbolt on the right is already implemented on the current macbook air. so there should not be able concern regarding this.
unless the length of the thunderbolt display only fit for 13" but not for 15" and 17"

I know it's a mock-up but, if Apple removes Ethernet/Firewire from MBP, then what's the purpose of Macbook "PRO".

If the things end up like this (which is unlikely, at least i hope so) then Apple's going to have new "Macbook" line, no Pro's or Air's.

thunderbolt is already able to support ethernet.
plus thunderbolt is faster than firewire, i am certain they will have adapter for it. afterall adapters for display existed for years.

Looks like we are losing several features and ports, but they can all still be supported externally (external ODD, USB to ethernet, hopefully thunderbolt to Firewire). Seems a reasonable option for progress. USB to ethernet is the one I can see myself getting if I ever got another laptop (happy with iMac / iPad combo, but love the idea of a retina computer screen).

I wouldn't call it "progress" if they are taking stuff away. I loved the MBA with the SSD but sold it due to no ODD and Ethernet and lack of upgradability in RAM. If they drop ODD and Ethernet I would not consider buying this model. Losing functionality for "thin" is just plain dumb on the Pro models.

Easy solution: Get an Airport Express, set it up in Bridge-Mode and use it.

Setting up a rogue AP in a corporate environment would probably either get you a rather long lecture and a write-up, or fired. I just hope that Apple offers a cheap dongle, and I'd prefer a Thunderbolt to 10Gb Ethernet adapter as well but we just have to hope.

how about pro updates?

it would be nice. However the macbookpro updates are welcome too. waiting for them then i'll be getting a new one.

Seriously..the title MacBook Pro is nothing but a title. Get over it. A computer running an ivy bridge processor is certainly up to "pro"standard. Perhaps Apple can include a sticker saying pro on it to make you goofs satisfied. As for firewire...as far as no Firewire..you need to really understand what Thunderbolt is. Firewire will work just fine with an adapter cable...and Firewire 800 on a laptop..seriously?

What's so unfeasible or ludicrous to you about using Firewire 800 on a laptop? Yes, it will annoying if I can no longer use my my WD HD with the FW800 cable and have to buy another adaptor/cable.... but I guess I am resigned to the fact we all have to evolve with the tech...

Which interfaces are you looking for exactly?
