Eh

Maybe that is something you don't like doing but I like having the newest technological advances as I'm sure many others do. Just not when they become instantly "old". :apple::D

The solution is so easy you're going to kick yourself. Get ready...wait for it...don't freakin' buy every new model that comes out! Now, wasn't that simple?

Same as the mini, not going to happen in spring.

That said, I would like a lighter iPad and would deffo be tempted to upgrade from my 3. Still have zero compulsion to get a 4, the first time I've not upgraded this.

They don't get instantly old...

Plus Apple doesn't even have the newest tech compared to the rest of the tech world.

Some examples...

Nexus 10's display is like 300 ppi compared to the iPad's 264
Tablets are phones are coming out with 1080p displays
Most tablets and smartphones now have NFC

So if you actually wanted the latest tech...you wouldn't go with Apple

I don't really mind stuff being updated every 6 months in theory however this is dependent on a few things:

1: The IOS / App support life cycle doesn't become too short - just like every other manufacturers tablet / phone

2: Resale values don't massively go down - Most people will just see iPad 4 and go 'are we not on the 6 now?' Even though it could be under a year old. I like to resell my Apple kit

3: The feature updates are more incremental. - This is a tough one, they need to strike a balance between leaving out great new features and having enough to make a new update worthwhile.

4: They don't shoot themselves in the foot and end up creating a perpetual wait cycle. I think I would be less inclined to upgrade to the latest and greatest as often if I knew my 'old' only had to last another 6 months, might push my cycle up from 1 year to 18 months or longer. I wont be buying a 4 for example (I am on a 3) and will wait for the 6 if the 5 is indeed only coming in March as my 3 is fine!

5: It doesn't become 9 months for the iphone and is either 6 or 12 months. I would hate being in a 2 year contract and be buying a 6 month old phone for example (hey thats just me). I am also not convinced about the 6 months though, most people are in 2 year contracts.

So I wait and see. Perhaps each products lifecycle should be determined differently or is that actually worse? Who knows!

Only for people who were dumb enough to buy the Ipad 4 and and who didn't realize that the Ipad 4 is just an updated Ipad 3 and not a new Ipad it is a bad and unexpected news.

All I want is a lot better camera:cool:

then buy a professional camera

None of these really matter. Apple is a drug lord....will sell real quick to get them high on idevices.

Haha now instead of 3rd gen owners feeling like crap after the short release of the 4th gen now theyll share some of our pain. I'll be getting this next refresh for sure.

I think it's a given that the iPad will receive its first major design change with the iPad 5, based on what we got with the iPad mini and iPhone 5. In other words, a significant upgrade, even for iPad 4 owners (unfortunately for them).

I agree, nothing new or special anymore coming from Cupertino.

Since Steve passed away its going down hill...

How many years will we be able to keep saying this? "Steve" has been dead for a year and a quarter...Apple lives on. What was 'new and special' about incremental changes to the white iMac G5/Core Duo? You seemed content enough to buy the post-Steve rMBP. Was that not 'new' and 'special'? There will be an Apple TV out soon that has Jobs's mark on it, and I think the iPad Mini is one of the best Apple designs yet (and I say this having just bought a 4th gen iPad). The melodrama is a bit overplayed. This isn't 'Days of Our Lives'.

Looking forward to the iPad 5. I like the larger retina display, and if it is thin and lighter, it will be close to perfection. I own an iPad 3 and my wife a mini. My sons have iPad 2s, and one added a mini. I will definitely upgrade all as soon as really new versions (as described) are available.

It´s honestly going to fast! I have the "new ipad", which is 9 months old and all ready outdated. But I feel in no way I need to get the latest yet. how about shifting some focus to the mac pro and perhaps some updated peripherals for macs...like a new even cooler keyboard, bigger & faster time capsule, a better magic mouse that you can click both left and right mousebutton at the same time...would be kind of nice! But, oh I forgot, that stuff don´t draw any revenue, lets update the ipad 20 times first.

All you gotta do is keep a close eye on the rumours and sell your iPad or Mini just days before the next event for maximum resale value. Once a new product is announced the price will drop as the market gets saturated with used iPads/Minis. This way it doesn't really matter how often Apple update them, you can always have the latest should you wish without losing too much cash.
Regarding the rumour headline, anyone with half a brain could have predicted this...

Japanese blog Macotakara is reporting that a redesigned fifth-generation iPad could arrive in March 2013.
Apple just released the fourth-generation iPad about two months ago, which could make this fifth-generation iPad, if the report is true, the second in five months. The design is said to have taken inspiration from the iPad mini and will be thinner and more lightweight. According to the site, the new iPad will 4mm, 17mm and 2mm smaller in height, width, and depth than the current models.

Previously, DigiTimes also reported that a new iPad could appear in the "Middle of 2013". Except for the fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini, new iPads are have traditionally released in the first couple months of the year.

Macotakara has been a source of accurate information in the past, predicting the design of this year's iPod Nano and iPod Touch.

I am beginning to think that these Apple based rumor sites are no longer about the love of Apple but the desire for their destruction. When I read the comments its clear the many who come here now claim to support Apple when they really don't and the rumor post are more and more anti-Apple as well. Posting leaks is damaging to their business model. Before it was only killing the surprise, but now they have copy cats like google and Samsung who are taking this information and rushing to beat them with their own ideas and plans. From iTunes in the cloud to their 3d maps, accurate information is released months in advance to their competitors via these sites and they do everything they can to beat them to market. I just saw a Samsung web commercial for a television with all of the features that have been leaked so far about the rumored Apple TV. No one was talking about these features before but 6 months later here comes Sammy checking off the list. Now when Apple comes to market it they still decide to they are at a disadvantage because what they planned to differentiate themselves with has been given to the competition. I hope part of the plan to bring some production here to the states allows Apple to regain control of their secrets, otherwise our support of these sites will the their undoing.

Think it's fair to give them a couple years to come up with anything truly new and special.

It took Apple with Steve as CEO about 5 years after he returned (1996) to launch the first iPod (2001). Than another 6 years (2007) for the 1st iPhone and 3 years for the iPad (2010). Everything in-between was just lighter and smaller versions of the same.

IF Apple manages to come with a new disruptive hardware product, don't count on anything too soon...

Yea its the rise of the Trolls, should be a film about it.

CEO Cook: "What? You only pay once every year? Let's make it twice."

That would be your own fault really wouldn't it? There's no rules saying you have to have the latest iDevice are there?

I've got an iPad 2, it's still great, I'll change it when it starts to die and get the current model whatever it may be. I think it's a more sensible approach, I don't buy a new house or car every six months...

So long as Apple continue to support their older models with software updates, shifting to a shorter release cycle should be fine. If they don't continue to support older models I think there's a danger of this backfiring on them as consumers start to feel short changed when their devices they only bought a couple of years previously become obsolete.

The other problem they may face is consumer apathy. A new model every year was manageable. It built up a sense of anticipation and even helper, I would argue, build the sense of magic that often surrounds Apples products. Shifting more towards an eight to 9 month cycle runs a very real risk of people loosing interest.
