5th Generation iPad....

Currently I am thinking of mini iPad. But after seeing this thread I have to wait for 2-3 months if 5th Generation device will come. :D

look at launch history for the ipad, every year at the same period

except for this year because apple updated twice the ipad, but otherwise, every year at the same period

that makes sense

Nah man, its called 'Obsolete Theory' in which new products make your product less functional, thus requiring you to purchase the newest model. You should try visiting a Apple forum every once in a while.

You mean, when the new one comes out, my Retina screen will become low res, all my apps will slow down, and I'll have constant boot up problems??!

Now I understand...when the new one comes out, all extant iPads stop working!

OK, I guess I'd better plan on getting a new one.

Thanks for the explanation, Mate!:p :D

You have the Android world, mainly google, to blame for this.

Since Android devices are produced and released every 2 weeks by multiple manufacturers, Apple has no choice at this point but to increase frequency.

I think its a good idea, if gives us more options. I chose not to upgrade from ipad 3 to 4, instead i went from the ipad 3 to side grading to ipad mini having them both exist within my homes iEcosystem. Now i know that i wont have to wait a whole year before getting an ipad 5, i can expect the option to be available within 6 months. Or if i want i can wait the full year and get 2 generations newer! Right now, there is no way i would ever buy an iPad that is more than 6 months old on the market.

Not going to happen.

It would seriously harm the second hand market - all Apple devices, if they double the frequency of their product refresh cycles, would instantly lose significant (1/2?) value when going to resale.

Why would Apple care about the second-hand market? They want people to buy new devices, so a decline in resale value is actually a benefit for Apple.

So what we have here is an new iPad every six months? I won't buy iPad anymore.

Hey, I want to see an updated cMBP in March 2013 with GPU upgraded to GTX680M, anyone with me?

Yes please.

It would mean all those prudent Ipad 3 owners who updated from Ipad 2 to the 3 never got ripped off buying two Ipads per year.

The March rumour is my more favourable one and I think Apple will yet again stick to a yearly cycle with Ipads. However Mini might get a update in the summer.

I'd still reckon Iphone 5S will be released about September. Iphone 5 is a strong handset and I think it will continue to see high sales so they don't have to rush out the next model.

Ipad Mini is too small..yet it's amazing to hold, thin, nice slate black...so I'd happily just have the thinner lighter Ipad with the same features as Ipad 4.

Let's be honest this sounds more like Ipad "4". Ipad "4" or Ipad 3 HD as I like to call it was just rushed out to put a lightning dock so it never look out dated when they gave us Ipad mini. However I bet there will be alot of cheesed off Ipad 4 owners but seriously did they think Apple would put out a hevier Ipad with the same shell as Ipad 3 and wait another year for the next one?

Apple were greedy and surprised everybody with Ipad 4 which is why people should have not bought into it unless they were new buyers to the device. Why do you think Ipad 3 was discontinued? Basically it was the Ipad 3 with a faster processor and new lightning connector and the retina display could not be brought down in price to sell it in place of Ipad 2.

March 2013 prepare for:

Ipad mini £269
Ipad 4th generation £329
Ipad 5th generation £399 - £430 (Wouldn't be surprised if the price edges up a little)

Ipad mini with retina can be for the summer quickly followed by Iphone 5S in September and that will be our IOS device year. Ipod Touch will just get a small refresh I reckon.

Yes I agree it will be nice for those of us who bought the iPad 3. That is, buying on a yearly schedule. Even though personally I skipped the iPad 2.

However I don't think it will ever be a yearly scheduled update ever again. A year is simply too long in the industry now.

In the Android world the Samsung GS3 is the 2012 android phone of the year and really put Android back on the map for high end phones again. A year before that it was the GS2, but the incremental upgrades from all other manufacturers and models brought in a lot of revenue too. That is what Apple do not want to miss out on. They want to be on the cutting edge of what's possible and give that to their customers.

Yes you do have to be richer or smarter in selling your iDevices but at least the technology is progressing as fast as commercially viable. I was pissed when they announced the iPad 4, but have come to accept that's the way of the world now. Nothing anyone can do to change it.

Look at it like another income stream, those customers who upgrade annually will still only buy one iPhone a year, but those want the top iPhone now no matter what time it is they will get it too.

Apple are hoping to convert a lot of annual upgraders to biannual upgraders who can't resist the shininess. :) I got my shininess satisfied from a Galaxy Note 2. Still got my iPhone 4, which must seem like an ancient phone in the iWorld.

I can't understand why always Android is to blame. Android is a totally different system from iOS, different performance, difference UI, different everything.

I mean Ford and Toyota are major car makers, so Rolls Royce have to catch up with their productivity?

If Apple believes that Android is always inferior to iOS, why Apple still tries to chase after that?

Christ, this is so not complicated.

iPad 4 was due to supply changes and essentially avoided them carrying dual inventory on certain pieces that were common to iPhone 5, etc. It just happened to be an interim upgrade with improvements but not really a regular cycle one.

iPad 5 will be the normal cycle upgrade. They aren't going to do this regularly more than a year, and they most likely will keep the iPad early in the year since the end of year releases were too packed last year.

It's about time apple switched to 16x9!
Why must they drag their feet over 5 gen's of iPad when 4x3 is such an outdated res.

I for one hope they maintain that ratio forever. The iPad is meant to be a replacement for an ebook reader not a handheld monitor. Its meant to be held in portrait mode the majority of the time. Surfing the web in portrait mode on a 16:9 ratio screen is not pleasant at all.

If apple can produce products this quickly, they are clearly taking babysteps during each update to drag it out and make more money..

I dont like that, just put the best you've got into a new product and release a new product when theres more to do.

The latest iPad was basically a spec-refresh to get the new Lightning connector in line with the new iPhone. That was fully expected, so it's no big surprise that a new iPad will come out this spring. I *would* be shocked if they started releasing two new iPads a year from here on out though. But I'm not complaining. My 3rd gen iPad is pretty much perfect for my needs.

this is great. It's a good idea to move ahead as fast as you can without compromise.

The only downside is the audible moaning. :D

why then They called iPad 3S and said that is just upgrade and new generation comes once a year? I really think that period for "new" generation is half year now

The 4rd gen was just a small upgrade to change it to lighning and was not even covered by an event. I was hoping this wasn't going to be 'the next' iPad...

I also personally believe that Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is the best smartphone in the market at this moment. Though "what's the best phone" differs from everyone's perspective.

The reason is very simple. That is, Android is becoming better and better and better than iOS. This is an undeniable reality.

Then why are all the Macbook Pros, Macbook Airs and iMacs 16:9?

Then let me rephrase myself.

I personally feel that 16:9 is the worst aspect ratio to be had for a tablet of the ipad's dimensions.

For the iphone, you would be using it in portrait mode most of the time anyways. Even if the iphone were 4:3, and you could fit 2 pdf pages side by side perfectly, the text would still be too small to read anyways. So I am okay with it being longer only.

I don't mind an imac being 16:9 because past a certain point, I don't need the screen to be any taller, while a wider screen would allow me to view more documents simultaneously side-by-side.

Same for a laptop, which allows me to reposition 2 apps on the same screen. The 11" air's 16:9 screen means I can say, have word and safari open side by side comfortably.

Conversely, because you can only have 1 app on the ipad screen at any one time, this means that for tasks like reading pdfs or surfing the web, the screen would either be too short or narrow.

The ipad may be made for gaming and watching videos, but those are far from its key purposes, and I suspect many people would lose more than they gain from a change to such a form factor.
