I find this utterly unacceptable and am glad I never bought any Apple TV to begin with.
This is the 3rd gen ATV without an App Store. It's pretty old by now, and not very enjoyable to use.

What better way to lose subscribers than to terminate support for a device they are watching on.

.... then again
With no subscribers, this seems like a pretty risk free move....

ViacomCBS released solid third-quarter earnings on Friday that showed signs of improvement in advertising sales and affiliate revenue as well as strong growth in its streaming operations.

Paid subscribers for CBS All Access and Showtime standalone streaming services have climbed to 17.9 million, up from the 13.5 million subs disclosed earlier this year. The company also said its ad-supported Pluto TV service has reached 28.4 monthly active users. Total streaming and digital revenue reached $636 million, up 56% from the year-ago frame.

ViacomCBS previously set a goal of amassing 25 million subscribers for Showtime and CBS All Access by the end of 2022.

I’m sure it will be as a stand-alone app. Which is what HBO Max did.

I’ve yet to see any commitments towards/against them introducing Paramount+ as a channel.

I’m very tired of each network having their own app. It’s cluttered, the apps suck (HBO Max, Peacock), and the billing is fragmented.
I believe you’re looking for an Xfinity X1 box :)

Yes another case where those who pirated got a longer sustainable, more transferable, quality product. And still the media companies wonder why it goes on...

Not that I’d do such a thing of course.

where is supposed updated 6th gen Apple TV? people with 3rd gen Apple TVs would surely upgrade to a new device.
Just ask Jon Prosser. He’s been saying Apple is sitting on a stockpile of refreshed Apple TVs with eminent release since March of last year.

Fact is no one knows. The 4K still is one of the most powerful streaming devices you can buy in 2021.

The CBS streaming service is actually a big deal for some people who don't have cable. You're able to get your local CBS channel live. This is great for watching the local news/weather in the morning before work.
If people want to watch live local news and weather, why subscribe to one station/channel for $5.99/mo (limited commercials) or $9.99/mo (commercial free) when a digital antenna can be had for the one time price of as little as $30 and you'll be able to receive dozens and dozens of HD channels?

I could buy a 3rd gen brand new less than 4.5 years ago yet now Apple wants such buyers to throw their HW in the trash? Yeah, that’s hilariou.
It's not Apple who's making the decision to no longer make the app available on 3rd gen Apple TV devices, it's CBS.

If you have an iOS device, you'll be able to use AirPlay to stream the Paramount+ content if you want. So it's not the end of the world.

CBS all access has a stigma of the new and poorly done star trek and not much else. At least Paramount doesn't have any negative stigma yet.
Poorly done Star Trek? Discovery has been mostly good, season 1 was a bit rough but it got much better after (honestly that's not odd for Trek, the first season of TNG is mostly a garbage fire) and Lower Decks is just fantastic, a canon show dedicated to taking the piss out of Trek is pretty awesome, been enjoying it immensely. I haven't watched Picard so I can't comment there. The general ratings for the shows back up my thoughts too, so I know I'm in the majority on this. The new shows may not be your, er, cup of (earl grey, hot) tea, but they aren't poorly done.

I will give you that CBS All Access is seen basically as "the Star Trek streaming service" though, which is probably a big part of the rebranding.

@Variety_Cynthia sure knows how to expand a press release into a full article 😛

<shrug> My ATV3's have more than paid for themselves by now. All these reductions in support are going to make me do is reduce streaming services, it's not going to make me pay for a new device or devices at this point. The ATV4 isn't something I want anything to do with.

I don’t have any idea why someone would buy an Apple TV over a $30 Roku. Even AirPlay is no longer a differentiator.

I expect the main reason is for people completely in the Apple ecosystem (like myself). I also like the integration with my Mac via the Computers app as I store my media on a Drobo 5D connected to it.

I do have Roku built in to my TCL LCD television in the main room and it works nice enough that I have not bothered adding an Apple TV there, as well (my ATV 4K is on my LG OLED in my bedroom), but if Apple priced the 4th gen at like $99, I'd add it as I am interested in Apple Fitness+ and I do not have space in my bedroom to work out.

I'm hoping Apple does release a new model with an A12Z or A14X. On the most recent Dithering podcast, Ben Thompson thought if Apple does release this, they should release it with a real controller and sell it as a game console and call it "Apple Arcade". I like the idea, as it would help justify the price difference compared to streaming-only boxes like Roku, Chromecast and Amazon Fire and both PlayStation and XBOX have video streaming apps in addition to playing video games and both of those consoles have new digital-download-game-only models.
