My only concern is the heat......

Thickness and width are nothing - especially at 0.3mm and 0.2mm respectively. But if the thing gets hot? Not a fan of that.....

Thinking about simply keeping my current mini and getting an iPad 5. For what I use the iPad for, the larger screen would come in handy. So long as the overall weight and footprint is acceptable (which it was not with the 4).

wait, Apple making something THICKER to accommodate technology?! What madness is this?

An iPad Mini with a retina display would be the ultimate 'walk around the house,' device. While I cannot be parted with my iPad 4, I would take a long hard look at going with a retina Mini instead.

People that talk about "no compromise devices" have their heads in the sand. There will always be compromises made in order to move technology forward. In this case, the compromise seems quite small given the additional benefits.

Barely a blip on the radar.

...Thank god I didn't get suckered into getting a non retina mini, which was essentially a minute iPad 2 being released in late 2012, yuck

Wow.

Thank God I bought the mini when it came out so I could spend a year enjoying the smaller form factor before I buy a retina mini this year.

The iPad 3 felt like a hot, heavy, thick slab compared to the iPad 2. I know that doesn't make sense because the increase was so tiny, but it DID. The heat in particular, coming from an iPad 1 was awful.

I know man. It's all these noobs on here that don't understand it's a significant change. Can you imagine what the iPad Mini is gonna be like with an A7 or A7x chip :p

----------

But sadly it won't. Gotta use that A6 first.

What are you talking about? Lol it's gonna have the A7

No, you don't. Apple doesn't owe you anything, and to imply that they even remotely care about you, the customer, is shortsighted.

No. You do not know me or at least understand if I am serious or being sarcastic. Stop judging people or get so wrap up riding your high horse.

Same. I've had iPad's 1,2 & 3, all great in their time, but the Mini has been drastically more useful for me. I use a macbook air at home mostly, while the Mini has been an amazing companion when I leave the house by virtue of it fitting in my coat pocket.

If I was on a tight budget, I would have waited for retina. But I'm not thankfully and have had a great year with v1! Roll on retina.

I am 0.3 inch richer too, Apple, please take my money now. I need a retina iPad mini now.

Say what? What does your coment have to do with what was stated? Besides, all that Apple does care about is the customer. The customer has stuffed their bank account with an extra $150B, and they're doing all they can to keep them happy. Products all have and will always have tradeoffs. People are screaming for retina on the mini, as well as battery life. Giving up only 3mm for this is an excellent tradeoff. In fact, I've added a case to my my iPad because I find it to be too thin.

That's cool, I really have no idea how heavy the current mini is due to the 6 pound brick and retracting cable attached to the ones at Best Buy. The mini 2 will feel Cloud light.

I'd rather hear this than hear it stayed the same thickness... pretty much confirms that the mini is finally getting a proper Retina display!

Key spec will be weight not thickness. It can be a bit thicker. It can't be perceptibly heavier.

I'll wait until I get to hold one

It's an about face for me (I was one of the chorus of disaproval, when the Mini launched), but I ended up buying one, and it became my favourite connected device of any kind. To my mind, the size, shape and weight of the gen 1 Mini are simply perfect.

Of course, the additional dimensions quoted here are small potatoes. I'm guessing some will be quite sensitive to a small increase in size/weight, while most will simply not care.

People act okay with the size but remember the difference between the iPad 3&4 and the iPad 2? Most people claimed the push ruined the iPad 2's great size/weight ratio.
