Its been a long time coming retina

Hey I will take the .03 to finally get a retina mini been waiting for one since launch

As long as Apple stays within 264-326 dpi, developers won't have to redo their artwork each time Apple releases a device with a new resolution, and the UI will stay nice and crisp.

They may have to tweak their layouts, but if they started using auto-layout APIs introduced in iOS 6 and dynamic text in iOS 7, it should be relatively easy and automatic especially since iOS 7 textureless design is ideal to use with flexible layouts.

Of course not every developer has been using those APIs, but I expect Apple to force things out next year with the release of a larger iPhone and possibly a phablet.

Fingers crossed! :)

Ha love that the depth measurements are in mm which is great and and then the weight is in Pounds!!?!

Stupid imperial measurements. might as well say it's three Scruples heavier or 1 Troy Dram. Or possibly a quarter of a Slug

This is just embarrasing... What are you doing Cook!?!?!

I DO NOT call making things thicker innovation... Cook is turning Apple in the wrong direction.

Steve would never have allowed this.

:apple::mad:

The nexus 7 is 100 cheaper and has a fantastic high res screen. Apple needs the mini to go retina.

In all fairness, all the google nexus products are sold at almost cost price as they are heavily subsidised by google ( they actually make a loss when sold through stores - or zero at most)

As they are making money from advertising every time you use it. It's a different business model.

I know a lot of people don't care about that stuff. But the stuff google is saving about you is scary.

Also the nexus, even the new one is nowhere near as nice to hold/use than the iPad mini

and the nexus resale is rubbish compared to the mini - i just bought a nexus 32gb ( for app testing ) for £70!!!!!! iPad minis still go for £220+

Every single on of your 39 comments is exactly the same. Are you some new kind of paid samsung Troll? Trying to undermine confidence from a different angle? I am guessing by your odd turn of phrase you are.

Or do you just have some thing very personal against Tim Cook?

You realise that overall Shares have gone up 25% under Cook since Steve left. Even with the crazy share buying in 2012.

So basically... you are wrong.

No, you are wrong. I'm no paid samsung troll.

I use Apple products daily, I've got the 5S, MBPr and a iMac at home (not including the iPad at work). I'm a fan of apple, but they have done so many missteps last few months...

Tim is destroying Apples and Steves legacy that took a few decades to build up.

I definitely wouldn't order one without waiting for the initial reviews, adding a retina screen is a big addition , since I already have a 1st generation, I'm definitely waiting for reports on weight, heat, and screen quality.

I have no problem with your logic. A retinized iPad Mini is certainly a big hardware change. So yes, it would be quite wise to wait out a little bit until initial reviews come in. I may do the same.

Knowing Apple... their engineers are aware that adding a retina screen may well affect battery life. Guess what? They have factored that in the design of the product, and may have compensated accordingly (we can hope).

Good points, but I just don't think Apple can explain another non-retina mini to to tech reviewers at this point in time. Sure people will buy the mini regardless, but if all the press starts slamming the mini for not being retina again.. I don't think Apple would want that. They're way better off making it Retina, and having supply be extremely constricted: Every will love it and the scarcity will only add to that. But I'll guess we'll see next week :)

I totally agree - an SOC bump, camera, etc., while appreciated isn't going to make as much of an impact as an rMini. I don't think they would settle with a battery hit, so a small thickness bump (combined with IZGO, maybe an A6X with a die shrink) seems reasonable to hit their use time goals.

What I wouldn't count on is pricing around the current mini, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple price it at $429 (vs. $499 for full-size, 16GB)

We're definitely in for an rMini.

I agree with everything, except the very end where you say they should release it with very constricted supplies. NOPE. They should release the next iPad Mini with retina, yes. But if they need to delay it for a month or two when they have enough retina screens produced (by their parts suppliers), then a slight delay is preferable IMHO. The thing that pisses off many customers is when Apple says the product is "officially released this week" but your damn order does not ship until 6 weeks later.

Apple should follow the Blizzard model where they always say "We are not going to release our games until it's ready for prime time. It's not ready until it's ready." They don't give dates for their games until it's well-tested and almost ready to ship.

Don't promise your customers something you cannot deliver.

So will there really be Retina? We've seen so many claims for both for and against the Retina display on the Mini this year it's so confusing.

Personally I'm rather intrigued by the lure of cheaper and lighter Mini with a faster SoC but the rumor has been that it's delayed for some reason too. :(

Apple should follow the Blizzard model where they always say "We are not going to release our games until it's ready for prime time.

That's not really comparable since the Blizzard model refers to the quality of the product whereas Apple suffers from the quantity of production. No matter how hard Apple tries, the initial shortage is to be expected because there's just so much bottled up demand for a new major Apple product at the launch.

Rubbish. In what way please. All you do is keep repeating this over and over again - you don't actually say why or how. Again the shares are up. Devices and computers are only getting better and better. The OS's are awesome to use.

Basically you are the one who is not Honouring Steve as you don't trust the team HE set up.

Might be a clue: the casino my dad has a player card in is offering ipad minis for a small amount of total rewards points starting in January. My parents are going to take one, since my mom's Nexus 7 is on its last legs. But if Apple is giving away old minis to casinos ...
