I don't know? Personal preference? The fact that you don't need the phone? More storage? Thinner? Lighter? With the metal back, it would be more durable if dropped (albeit still very prone to cracking).

It's all personal preference. Just because it has phone functionality doesn't mean you should get it if you aren't going to call people with it.

That's like buying a smartphone because you can, when you aren't going to call or use data, when you can simply get it without the phone. That's WHY the iPod Touch is there.

almost?

They're never going to do that to the home button. It would be harder to push, the normal circle one works fine, it would take up more room in the guts of the iPhone and finally, it just looks weird. I love the edge-to-edge screen though. Totally expecting that in an iPhone sometime in the future if not in the iPhone 5.

I can't catch the vision at all for the elongated home button, I am not sure why people keep throwing that into the mock ups. I highly doubt they will change the home button from being a perfect circle.

I think that home button would be really cool if it included some sort of multi-touch gestures that worked with it.

I also love the edge to edge screen, no bezel looks great! I got my iPhone 4 on July 5, 2010, so I think I'll be eligible for an upgrade when this puppy gets released. Even if this isn't the exact design, I plan on getting an iPhone 5 when it comes out! Love my 4, and the 5 can only be better!

I second the gestures. Think about it; a swype from left to right or right to left to switch between applications... a swype down to pull down the notification bar... taps instead of pushes to do things.... of course I would love the option to disable any and all of them if I wanted, but they could do something there.

I think with the way iOS looks and only having one button, applications and the interaction with the phone is kind of bland... I love Android in the fact that there are so many ways to interact with the phone. On my Nexus ! I could hover my hand over the phone to turn the screen off (proximity sensor), do things with the acceleramator(sp), led flashlight, color trackball... it was crazy.

If this rendering is correct, then in many ways the new iPhone will look like a slightly writ large version of the 4G iPod touch, but slightly curved to accommodate the slightly curved 4" IPS touchscreen panel.

Looks like Galaxy S II, hope Apple doesn't get sued
Also please no tapered edges on iPhones and iPod touches, just makes it hard to grip. It's like holding a soap.

Am I the only one that notices in the patent drawing it looks like the home button is actually 3 buttons not one big ugly one?

I really like the back of the pictures, Just not the front! It would be so sick to have the finish of the iPad 2 as the back of the iPhone 5.

Lets hope not

I hope the new iphone will never look like on these pictures. Why?

1. Remember that problem with audio jack on all iphones till they released 3GS?
2. The screen seems to close to the side edges so the cases are not gonna "work" fine with this design especially when you try to move icons from one home screen to another.
3. They moved antenna outside. Will they move it back inside?

These renderings look like somebody's ideas, not Apple's. It looks exactly like the firstl iphone slightly modified with the iOS screen on it. I wouldn't buy it.

Wow, hopefully.

Beautiful.

I'm fed up with the lack of innovative Apps on Android...

That tapering is going to give an odd feel in horizontal mode. One side will feel thicker than the other. This will give an odd feel toward games like Angry Birds and driving games. I'm sure a lot of cases will make the back feel flat and place in weights to put the center of gravity in the face center if it is not there already.
