The way you guys are talking on this thread, I get the feeling that it doesn't matter what you have. OSX and Windows are basically the same (generally not at all specifically)? Sorta discourages me since I feel like there's no reason to buy one now if I'm going to get something very similar to my dell but with a more sleek and organized feel.
It kinda leaves me with the question, why was Mac even made (clearly business for Apple) if it's nothing "technically" new.
I probably made no sense, but hopefully someone catches my drift.
Sane,
My honest opinion having been a windows users for a long time and recently delving into OSX as of late, I think of the 2 OS'es as Sony and Pioneer TVs.
They both have several models that do more and and have functions and hihger quality as the prices increase. consider the remotes the OS'es. Some remotes are better layed out than others but they both have the ability to do similar functions.
I have friends that are high level princple engineers that can barely turn a TV on while others are technicians thatare programming their remotes like mad.
Sony = LCD = OSX
Pioneer = Plasma = windows.
LCD is less apt to burn in or viruses and malware, but not 100% resistant.
Plasma = is suseptible to burn in even though the manufacture has provided tools and program to prevent it. just like windows is to viruses and malware.
Some say LCD is is better then Plasma and vice versa.
Which OS is better to me. Windows, why because I am more familiar with it no other reason. I am sure I can do at least 95% of what I do onmy laptop on a mac. but the other 5% is important to me.
The chips inside Macs and PC are made on the same Intel lines. they don't say this one goes into mac and the other goes into PC.
Mac looks prettier to me because I am very used to Windows.
i am sure you are using Forum spy. Macs are not problems free. PC are not problem free. If macs are not being built in the same factories as PCs they are most likely being built in the next building over. China is China in quality. People that push macs say you get what you pay for. That goes for labor too. Cheap labor poor quality. It is cheaper for apple to have a 5% return than it is to take longer inspecting the machines. then can make up th 5% and more by pushing out more units.
The real question what does the user want and need. I think in your case Mac is in your future come hell or high water.
Take some time in finding the negatives of your current laptop. Not the OS but the hardware,; is it up to date, is the harddrive adequate, enough ram, video ram enough, and so on. then taking the approach that the inspiron is out of date and needs to be updated might be a viable approach. then introduce the mac to him and be flexible in the model that you get. Check out the refurbs, look t bet buy for returns and so on.
If the answer to a new computer is still no or a PC is the only choice, there are many ways to make a few hunderd/thousand over the summer.
Check local universities for people selling their macs on the cheap.
Keep learning about OSX and frequent the mac forums. There are a great deal of knowledgable people here that are willing to share their knowledge and experieinces.
