I'm just telling you my experience, no need for the sarcasm. In my experience, files and folders are incredibly annoying to search and browse through. It's all opinions, my friend.

DONT WORRY man. you are wrong no matter what you say on MR :D

There was a time (about four or five years ago) when Mac OS X was vastly superior to Windows. These days though Microsoft has solved many of the significant problems that they had with their OS and it is now very stable, reliable and free of malicious software if you treat it properly.

At the same time, Apple took several steps backwards in my opinion - they released Leopard which was unstable and buggy and even though they have improved things since then it is not free of problems.

The question is whether you want to spend so much extra money on something different. That's all it really is these days - different. Not better. The recent Microsoft television adverts in the USA highlighted that you can buy a machine from Dell which costs $972 which has the same internal components as a MacBook which costs $1774.

Seems like the big issue is here is money. It's pretty much a given, however, that if you're buying something Apple you're going to be dishing out more money. That's just the way it is with everything Apple.
I wouldn't say Microsoft has fixed their bugs and taken steps forward. With Vista their answer to security was making you click OK 3 times when you want to open up the internet, Yes you can turn it off. But, seriously - did they really think that was a good idea to make Internet Explorer ask you if it's okay to access the Internet?
Vista, in my opinion, tried to be more like Mac with their new Explorer/My Computer and Widgets - But in all honesty it made it more messy for my needs.
I could sound like an Idiot, but thats what I see right now with my Windows.

Apparently, it's one thing to have an opinion but another thing to not consider the other options.

With an Add-on it becomes "much better" I'd rather have a computer where better searching and accessibility comes pre-downloaded, such as Mac. I'm sorry but with my experience, Explorer is one of the more non-friendly things on my computer. Especially with Vista, it's extremely messy.
It's all opinions, no one can say which one is better - it depends on your preference.

Are you on windows XP or what? If you're on Vista, press your windows button, type whatever you want, and search away...

I think the bigger issue at hand is you don't really know how to use windows. OSX is more noob friendly when it comes to files/folders, so I guess you'll like it more. But it's no where near as powerful...

I'm sorry, but you haven't got a clue...UAC is great once it's set up. It does not constantly ASK if you want to go on the internet. What the hell?

I'm sorry, but I don't even know how to respond to your drivel...

I mean, explorer trying to be more like mac? What?!

Everything you have said in this thread has been an opinion. It makes me laugh. You can't spew opinions at someone and make them sound like facts.

IN MY OPINION, EXPLORER IS MESSY.
In no way does that say "I have no idea how to use it" Like I said before I have organized it time and time again but there's no way to get rid of the Folders and Files that are made by various programs but stuffed in My Documents - I can't get rid of them since I have no idea what is what.

And yes, when you first set-up Vista and access the internet you are bombarded with messages asking if it's OK for Internet Explorer to access the internet. Anyone with a brain would know to disable the messages. But for someone who doesn't use the computer often, that would be an annoying setting. Why put something on a computer that everyone is going to disable anyway?

You don't have to baby me and teach me the correct way to search on Windows. I know all of that. Plus that feature in the Start Menu doesn't search your whole harddrive. As far as I'm concerned, everytime I use it to find a profile I always come up blank. THAT IS MY EXPERIENCE.

I'm sorry, but you're not helping at all. All you're doing talking down to everyone so you can sound correct. That's not the kind of person I need to help me.

The way you guys are talking on this thread, I get the feeling that it doesn't matter what you have. OSX and Windows are basically the same (generally not at all specifically)? Sorta discourages me since I feel like there's no reason to buy one now if I'm going to get something very similar to my dell but with a more sleek and organized feel.

It kinda leaves me with the question, why was Mac even made (clearly business for Apple) if it's nothing "technically" new.

I probably made no sense, but hopefully someone catches my drift.

Sane,
My honest opinion having been a windows users for a long time and recently delving into OSX as of late, I think of the 2 OS'es as Sony and Pioneer TVs.
They both have several models that do more and and have functions and hihger quality as the prices increase. consider the remotes the OS'es. Some remotes are better layed out than others but they both have the ability to do similar functions.
I have friends that are high level princple engineers that can barely turn a TV on while others are technicians thatare programming their remotes like mad.
Sony = LCD = OSX
Pioneer = Plasma = windows.
LCD is less apt to burn in or viruses and malware, but not 100% resistant.
Plasma = is suseptible to burn in even though the manufacture has provided tools and program to prevent it. just like windows is to viruses and malware.

Some say LCD is is better then Plasma and vice versa.
Which OS is better to me. Windows, why because I am more familiar with it no other reason. I am sure I can do at least 95% of what I do onmy laptop on a mac. but the other 5% is important to me.
The chips inside Macs and PC are made on the same Intel lines. they don't say this one goes into mac and the other goes into PC.
Mac looks prettier to me because I am very used to Windows.
i am sure you are using Forum spy. Macs are not problems free. PC are not problem free. If macs are not being built in the same factories as PCs they are most likely being built in the next building over. China is China in quality. People that push macs say you get what you pay for. That goes for labor too. Cheap labor poor quality. It is cheaper for apple to have a 5% return than it is to take longer inspecting the machines. then can make up th 5% and more by pushing out more units.
The real question what does the user want and need. I think in your case Mac is in your future come hell or high water.
Take some time in finding the negatives of your current laptop. Not the OS but the hardware,; is it up to date, is the harddrive adequate, enough ram, video ram enough, and so on. then taking the approach that the inspiron is out of date and needs to be updated might be a viable approach. then introduce the mac to him and be flexible in the model that you get. Check out the refurbs, look t bet buy for returns and so on.

If the answer to a new computer is still no or a PC is the only choice, there are many ways to make a few hunderd/thousand over the summer.
Check local universities for people selling their macs on the cheap.
Keep learning about OSX and frequent the mac forums. There are a great deal of knowledgable people here that are willing to share their knowledge and experieinces.

Um, no. I don't mind your opinions. The problem is you BASE your opinions on things that are not true. That is my problem...

First of all, let's explain what UAC is. It serves the same purpose as OSX forcing you to enter in your password every time you want to install something. It is to give the USER the power to stop unwanted apps from being installed/run on their machines. Again, both are not fool-proof since it is largely dependent on the user. People can still enter in their password to no matter what app wants to install or click OK (in vista) to whatever app is being opened, so both are not fool proof. That is the whole point of UAC, and OSX just uses something similar in a different way...

Let me explain why UAC is a GOOD thing. Many times, when downloading shady software, it'll install more than one piece of software. So for instance, let's say you download a game called "Shooter." After opening a Shooter.exe will open (the game) but then it may be trying to open another file like "keylogger.exe." In that case UAC will at least allow you to block "keylogger.exe" so you don't get keylogged, and the keylogger software will never install/run. It stops things like stealth apps from ever running..

Once giving an App permission the first time, UAC won't bug you twice about it and will know you trust. It's not obtrusive at all. It's not much different than OSX requiring a password to install things.

Now, what I did find stupid was that Microsoft even had UAC ask for approval on already OS apps, but that has changed with windows 7.

BTW, it wasn't UAC asking if you want explorer to connect to the internet. That was windows firewall.

In your opinion, windows is "messy," but no where have you explained why you think it's MESSY. You just go "OMG it is my opinion." You have strong opinions, you should be able to express why you have them and DEFEND your opinions. If you can't, you really don't have a clue as to WHY you have those opinions...

Oh, and FYI, your Vista search thing. You can set what you want indexed via control panel, so you will be able to have your whole hard drive indexed and not deal with that issue.

But anyway, I think a MAC will be perfect for you as it is more noob friendly...just get it...

I figured I would go on a Mac forum and a Windows forum to get a few reasons why one is better than the other and compare them in a side by side document. [/B]

Just curious: what Windows forum did you post on?

Cheers!

Im sorry Sane, the fact that you come here for answers and all you get is guys that want to argue because everybody (Not really everybody but just a few people) are always right and know everything. They want you to get this or get that because they know what is better or worse. If you know what I mean.
Get what you want and experience it for yourself. Everyone is different. I don't believe you will regret your decision.

depends on on what you use on the OS

Macintosh computers are good for graphic design. Video and photo programs are good too

Windows are very good for office suites ( word , excel and power point) and business. Office 2007 is a lot better than Office 2008 and iwork. They also have a lot more 3rd party programs.

I have used tiger and xp the most. I do not think leopard is much of an improvement than tiger. I have used vista a little bit.

In this economy I think the dell would be a better choice than the white macbook if your not going to use the computer for graphics, video or photo editing.

I think the only real advantage of an mac is the creative suite programs and
video programs. Everything else on the mac in the same as on pc windows

Last I read, this is a discussion forum for people to express themselves. I guess you'd like a forum in which every just went "YES BABY BUY A MAC," but then there would be no point in a discussion forum. I think the OP and everyone else should be thankful there are people with different opinions/thoughts so others can actually get more information.

But why am I bothering? I don't think you'll understand that. In fact, I don't think people can learn more from you than they can learn from the "HI I'M A MAC" commercials (which means learn absolutely nothing)

I'm not trying to be a prick. I'm just trying to say the truth and call out false statements when I see them, but the truth doesn't seem to fly too well with some people...

I have a problem with people coming on my thread arguing. All I asked for was simple opinions about Mac and PC. Not that hard. You stated your opinions, no need to bash other people's if they're right or wrong, I can make that call - even if my judgement is "tarnished" and "illogical" in your eyes.

It's not arguing. It's called a debate. I guess Presidential debates would be considered "arguing and bashing" in your eyes. How else would like people to express their opinions? Would like someone just to list their opinion, and have people go "OK THAT'S COOL!!!!!11 It's YOUUUR OPINION...I RESPECT IT" I personally think people debating as to what is right is much better and will allow users access to better information and will actually make this forum what it is suppose to be (a FORUM TO DISCUSS things). But you're in high school ( I assume), so I don't expect you to understand the value of debating and defending one's own opinions. When you grow up, you will understand why. I certainly thought like you when I was in high school...

And where are you quoting tarnished and illogical from? I don't think I said illogical and tarnished in any of my posts.

No where in my OP did I say "DEBATE ABOUT IT!". I want your opinions, you gave them, it's over.
Clearly this "debate" isn't about helping me anymore. So give it a rest.
It's pretty sad that you have to feel like the bigger person to someone who is clearly younger than you.
I quoted them because I felt like your posts towards me were summed up in those two words.

Now if you don't have anything else informative to say, I'd appreciate it if you stopped debating with anyone who comes in this thread with an opinion defending Mac or opposing Windows.
Thanks.

This is a forum where everyone is free to post their opinions. Thread creators cannot create their own rules for their own threads. As far as I am concerned, if I see anyone spewing nonsense, I'll reply to it. If you don't like it, put me on your ignore list and your problem is solved. I don't know why you just like people posting whatever it is without them being called out on it if it is wrong...

Second of all, I wasn't talking down to you. It's just common sense as people get older they become wiser and that was it.

You're right. Back on topic, please.
I don't even care anymore.

If you want to go back on topic, I think you should give your dad a break in this tough economy, and you don't really need a new computer. If you want to buy a Macbook, make your own money and buy it. Otherwise, I think it's unfair of you trying to make your dad spend $1500 of his hard earned money on something you don't need...
